UNREAL SCENES: GK Sees Red Card, Nani Misses PK, Field Player Makes Game-Winning Save!

  • Orlando twice thought they’d won before Michel’s attempt, first when starting goalkeeper Pedro Gallese appeared to make a game-winning PK save on Valentin Castellanos during NYCFC’s fifth attempt. But Gallese was judged to have come off his line too early and was shown a yellow card. The Peruvian goalkeeper had already been shown a yellow card for time-wasting in the second extra-time period, so he was sent off and Orlando turned to Schlegel (a center back) at goalkeeper after substitute confusion saw the Lions try to initially bring on Brian Rowe, their backup goalkeeper.
Castellanos finished past Schlegel on his second attempt, and then Sean Johnson sent the PK shootout to sudden death when he denied Nani in the fifth round. If that wasn’t dramatic enough, Orlando’s players and coaches also rushed the field after Thorarinsson was denied, seemingly unaware that the shootout was deadlocked at 5-5 and they needed to score.

The rules changed for 20/21 where the keeper gets a warning first. Also, yellows from during the game do not carry over. Because the rules changed after the start of the 2020 MLS season, they are still playing under the 2019/20 rules so ultimately, they got it right. The reason you don't see it now is simply because La Liga for some reason (money most probably) stopped uploading good highlights on their CZcams channel since the 16/17 season.
Look at the seasons before that and you would see multiple videos for each and every game, from extended highlights to red cards/wrong offside calls and decisions missed by the referees.
And last but not least, the moments in those leagues are the "controversial" moments/moments a referee sees something wrong/differently, which can happen.

In don't think they ever disputed that Gallese's encroachment warranted a second yellow according to the letter of the law, they just stated it was ridiculous. Which is a perfectly valid position to take. The laws might state that encroachment is a yellow, but how often do you see a goalkeeper actually receive a yellow for that offense? Referees recognize its an absurd rule, and oftentimes encroachment isn't even called back, let alone punished with a yellow or, even worse, a second yellow.
And yes, technically all of the referees decisions were correct, the issue was more so with how they managed the match. First allowing Rowe to be substituted and only right before the penalty was to be taken reversing that decision is absurd, and then later verbally confirming to Orlando that they had won before they actually has is even worse. Ultimately, a shambolic display by the referees.

    - NYC shot saved
    - Upon VAR review the goalkeeper had come off his line. Per the 2019/20 FIFA LoTG that is an automatic yellow card (changed in 2020/21). Since that was a 2nd it was a subsequent red card.
    - Only a goalkeeper who is unable to continue is allowed to subbed during KFTM. Send offs don't count as "unable to continue" and you can't sub a sent off player anyways, therefore a field player had to replace the sent off goalkeeper.
