Almost a DISASTER | Dovetail Jewelry Box Build

- This jewelry box took me 80 hours to build and contains 64 hand cut mitered, half-blind, and through dovetails. All dovetail joinery is cut completely by hand, and much of the other joinery is hand cut as well. I built it for my wife for Valentines day.
During the glue up of this box, I accidentally assembled the carcass in the wrong order, leaving me with a pin board as the fourth piece. While frantically trying to disassemble the quickly-drying glue joints, I snapped the side wall of this box in half along the grain. I had spent two weeks working up to this point. Thanks to some quick thinking I was able to perfectly repair the joint. In the final box, the broken seam is 100% completely invisible.
The outer carcass is made of one piece of solid walnut, with mitered dovetails visible from the front and back for a more modern look. The back panel is also solid walnut from the same log, and it floats in a groove. It is only glued in the central points to allow for expansion and contraction. The drawer dividers are walnut and fit in dados cut on the router table.
The drawers have continuous grain walnut fronts with half blind dovetails. The drawer sides are maple, the backs are cherry, and the bottoms are maple veneered plywood. The custom drawer dividers are made of walnut and can be removed.
The two vertical drawers house 20 necklaces (5 on each side of each drawer, as the bottom panel actually fits in the middle of the drawer). The necklaces hang on grooved walnut dowels coated with a rubberized substance to give more grip. The bottom of the necklaces pool in custom walnut slots.
The drawer stops are made of maple and fit into stopped holes made with two different sized forstener bits. They are of course removable if the drawers ever need to be removed.
Every surface is finished with multiple coats of spray lacquer, buffed to a glass smooth finish.
The hardware is brass and is all made by Brusso. The feet are item "JB-755" (www.brusso.com/jb-755-box-feet/) and the knobs are item "MC-428" (www.brusso.com/mc-428/).
The dimensions of the box are as follows: 10" wide, 7" tall, 6 3/4" deep. Outer walls 7/16" thick. Drawer dividers 1/4" thick. Vertical drawers 1 1/2" wide. Horizontal drawers 1 1/4" tall. Drawer fronts 1/2" thick. Drawer sides 1/4" thick.

Nice job, thanks for share this video 👌
While I miss your voice overs I do like this style. My only suggestion would be to add close captions explaining what you are doing in each step.
Beautiful video! I'm making a dovetail jewelry box too .... your video will help me not make mistakes!
☺☺☺👍👍👍👍
Can you tell me what is the wood and the finish used?
Recipient of gift: "Oh, it's perfect in every way!" Every woodworker: "There's a huge split right here where I screwed up."
Me giving the gift: "I hope you like it! Also there's a massive split right here that you probably wouldn't have noticed if I hadn't told you about it just now." 😂
@@dkbuilds never point ur mistakes to customers 🤣 im gonna add this to my portfolio if that's ok
Love how you filmed this , no music, just the relaxing sounds of some fine woodworking
Awesome thanks Kadeer! I'll definitely be trying to stick to this format for future videos.
@@dkbuilds How many cameras did you use?
@@jmpsmash Just one!
No offence to the guys that make their projects using mainly machinery, but watching proper hand work is so much more pleasing. Great work!
Thanks so much for the kind words Oki! I agree!
I love the transparency about the mistake. I find that fixing mistakes in my woodworking teaches me when dealing with mistakes in life.
Very wise words Michael, thank you for sharing. I agree!
And this is why you should use liquid hide glue. Especially when working with dovetail joinery. After your mistake, you would have spritzed a little warm water on the joint and gently undone the joints without pounding it with a mallet. Then you would have taken a break and come back relaxed, applied some warm water on the old glue and put new glue on top, with no need to remove the old glue (it sticks to itself, unlike other glues). And you would have saved a lot of trouble sanding away the squeeze out mess, because it doesn't interfere with finishes. Order yourself some Old Brown Glue and you'll never feel glue-up anxiety again.
Great video and great build!
Yes that's a very good point. I definitely would have been better off her if I had used hide glue instead!! Thanks for the tip!
LOL! I recognize that look at the phone clock.... "shiiiiiiit"....
😆
Perfect. The break really did vanish. Only you and a couple thousand viewers will ever know!
😂
I like how you clamped the drawers flat on some scrap MDF, I’ll have to steal that trick
Awesome thanks James, happy to have shown you something new!
Beautiful work mate.
Thanks Dave!
Seeing the title of a jewelry box being made, I was iffy. I was blown away of very little power tools used to make it and how it came out perfect. Great craftsmanship! I'm jealous!
Thanks for the very kind words Jason, super glad you liked the video!
Beautiful. Very good
Thank you Zefo!
Beautiful amazing work
I appreciate all the kind comments Jim, I'm so glad you enjoy the videos!
Well played, sir. We'll played.
💪 Thanks Carl!

Nice save. Nice project.
Thank you rweait!
awesome, awesome work !!!
Thanks for the kind words Stefan!
Awesome work.
Thanks jman!
Magnificent.
Thanks Richard!
Awesome work
Thanks Stephen!
From very careful and calm, like a handcrafter knowing what he is doing, to PAAAAANIC before the glue dries, a deep "pheeeew" after the recovery, back to a calm and careful handcrafter. Very nice project indeed.
😝Thanks M, glad you liked it!
Remember mistakes are just a chance to make it a feature. Great job!!
Love the positive attitude. Thanks for sharing Ed!
Lol, I love the way you get faster and faster trying to get it all together before the glue goes off after the cock up. Well done for filming and showing it all. Good recovery. Turned into a great looking box with some nice design features.
LOL thanks Russell glad you enjoyed it ... I still get anxious just remembering that glue up. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Nice jewelry box!
Thank you Rob!
So beautiful
Thanks so much Kylie, I'm glad you liked it!
Beautiful.
Thanks Tim!
Great work. It’s beautiful. Great example of hybrid woodworking. Beautiful piece.
Thanks so much for the kind words Mario!
It's good to see I'm not the only one going glue crazy after I realize I made a mistake! Lol. Great work! Nicely done
Lol! You are not alone. Thanks for the kind words Robert!
Wooow! Perfect!
Thank you Stefan!
Nice to see the combo of hand tools and machinery used, where appropriate to quickly achieve precise results, while saving muscle labor.
Awesome, I'm glad you like my style Zircon! That is exactly my goal. Save time on tedious stuff with power tools, use hand tools for the fun stuff :)
Heart sank when i saw that split happen. Been there
Lol! Thanks for the support Austin, I learned an important lesson there!
Beautiful
Thanks five!!
Very Nice!!! Well Done!!! Thank You!!!! 👍😎😃
Thank you for watching Krischen!

I know that feeling of panic and frustration when glueing goes wrong.
The project turned out amazingly well at the end.

stunning job, i'll try and replicate everything except the glue up :P for my daughters birthday.
Haha thanks John, good luck! Let me know how it turns out!
very well made jewelry box hidden dovetails where excelent.
Thanks so much!
Awesome job, just the thought or mention of glue-ups raises my anxiety. LOL
Lol me too now, thanks to this one. Thanks for watching Stallion!
Good to know this still happens to someone who is way better at woodworking than myself. I look forward to all the future panic and frustration :)
Haha it never seems to go away! Maybe one day...
Great job.I think it’s great That you didn’t cut the mistake out of the video. That gives many amateurs a feeling of „thanks God he’s mortal, maybe I can do that too“ great job and good editing, without annoying music or useless long sequences.I enjoyed watching.Keep it up
Excellent, I'm glad I left the mistake in there when I was editing! I appreciate the feedback Johny!
Welcome. And if someone is going to copy your project,he knows how to deal with this problem, when it happens to them.I really like the community of makers, that help people having fun with their hobby, cause I think it’s way more healthy than playing ego shooters online, all the day.
Beautiful box. That herringbone chain is going to kink up being stored like that.
Thanks Pippa! Agreed the necklace storage is the weakest part of the box IMO. I appreciate the feedback!
@@dkbuilds I didn't mean to say THAT at all. I love the feature and I especially love that you included a little piece of wood to keep the chains safely in their place. I have a very expensive Italian box by Agresti that doesn't have a place for the chains to rest so I have to make sure the chains aren't caught in the doors before I close them or hung up on anything when I pull the racks out. I try to only use it for shorter chains that won't drag or snag so it is limited in use. I think the necklace storage is exceptionally well designed. I would be very surprised if the woman who owns it had any problems with it. I would hang my cable chains on in that box with pride, but not herringbone chains nor my pearls which need to be laid flat for storage. Pearls stretch out and herringbone while lovely (like liquid gold) has a terrible tendency to kink up and when it happens there is nothing and I mean nothing that can be done except sell the piece for scrap value which is heartbreaking. Many other type of chain necklaces would be perfectly safe in the box though. I love it. I am so sorry I didn't make that more clear. The problem is herringbone, not the box which is exquisite. :))
This was like an action movie :) Enjoyed!
Thank you Mart, I'm glad you liked it!
I noticed the hockey tape on your clamps, which confirms that we know the same person who teaches these excellent methods, and more importantly the ways of thinking about the work. In the end, this way of looking at the work migrates into how we look at so much beyond just woodworking. At some point we come to understanding that there is very little we can't fix or can't make, and that realization allows us to approach both the work and life with a much healthier attitude. Or at least that's what it's done for me.
Merry Christmas!
I couldn't agree more with your comment Laurence. Learning that there is little I can't fix or can't make has totally changed my world view in the past 10 years or so. I appreciate you taking the time to type out your thoughts. Hope you had a happy holidays!
Thank you for sharing your work, mistakes and all!! A great learning experience.
Thanks so much for watching and commenting, plum! Glad you liked it!
The glue up was hard to watch; I could feel the stress levels mounting at this end. In the end the box turned out beautifully; lovely wood; perfect joints, and a great design. Thanks for sharing your ideas and obvious skills with us. Best wishes. :)
Thank you! Hope I didn't stress you out too much :) I appreciate you watching and commenting, Mark!
I got emotional when you broke the board. How calm you were. I'd have been in tears. Thanks for sharing this build.
Haha I hope it didn't stress you out too much! Had I not been able to repair it, I would have been in tears too 😂
Well, I'm OK. I didn't break down and need therapy or anything. But, I just imagined myself at that moment and know it would have been a problem for me.
That came out terrific! I admire your dedication to hand tools 😄 I don't think there's a woodworker alive who hasn't had a glue up go terribly awry! The important thing is you fixed it. Woodworking has much to do with being able to hide f*ck ups as anything else. Love the shooting board as much as you do 😉 Thanks for sharing!
Haha very good point jc! And yes shooting boards are the best. So precise!
WOW WOW WOW 🤩⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐🤩
😇
very nice !
Thanks Cory!
Wow! No more words… just emotions…
Thanks Amaury I'm glad you liked it!
O...M...G. I could feel the pain of your discovery. 😱😖😩💩
Sort of like going through Kubler-Ross' five stages of grief.
LOL exactly! Sorry you had to go through the same pain I did by watching the video! 😂
Really appreciate your hand tool craftsmanship and your hybrid approach. - Chris
Thanks so much Chris!
Outstanding! I like the way the drawers turned out. Great ingenuity on the vertical ones for hanging necklaces.
Thanks so much Sevisbellum! I'm very happy with how the necklace drawers turned out!
Good project
Thanks so much!
An incredible amount of work, beautiful. I hope the recipient values it as it deserves.
Thank you so much Steve! My wife was the recipient and she uses it every day :)
that is crazy love it
Thank you!!
The box looks more valuable than its contents! Great work!
Haha that is probably true! Thank you Andrei!
Very cool
Thanks, royal!
that rotating workbench is mindblowing
😇 Glad you like it Ryzen!
Oh man, I could feel the tension! So happy you share this kind of stuff. So helpful to learn how others deal with stressful situations like these!
Haha sorry to make you feel stressed Adam! Glad you liked the video. I will keep making videos in the future, always showing my mistakes in the hopes it will teach others not to make the same ones!
that it is very beautiful is a matter! but the way you work and you exactly is phenomenal! you also radiate a calmness !! keep it up friend
Thank you so much for the kind words Kaddouri!
That’s a fantastic jewellery box. Didn’t know you could plane the wide face of timber like you did with a hand plane. Great job, thanks for posting so we can see how it should be done.
Awesome thanks Harry! I'm proud to have shown you something new!
Any serious woodworker becomes a master through mistakes. Perfection is reached by overcoming obstacles. Very nice of you to share moments like these. Joy comes through the journey. Thanks.
I totally agree. I'm not sure I'll ever reach perfection but each obstacle overcome represents a lesson learned that gets me closer. Thanks for sharing Rick.
There is no perfection just strive to be perfect in your own way ✨️
C’est de l’art , bravo !
Merci beaucoup Kelly !
Nicely done. Clever drawer stops. 👍👊

Fantastic. Thank you for taking the time to put these videos together for us. I was sweating during that glue up!
Thanks so much Matthew, I'm glad all my hard work in video production is worth it. I was sweating every time I had to re-watch the glue up scene while editing... I must have watched it 20 times now. Probably took a few days off my life!
It was really enjoyable to watch this. It was also very informative. Thanks for sharing. Greetings..
