The Nicest Thing I’ve Ever Built | 100 Hour Hand Tool Cabinet Build
Vložit
- čas přidán 23. 08. 2020
- This wall mounted tool cabinet was built almost entirely with the hand tools it houses. This project took over 100 hours and includes 50+ hand cut dovetails, 35+ magnets, 100+ brass slotted screws, and countless drops of blood, sweat, and tears.
Now that the project is complete, I can confidently say this is the nicest thing I've ever built.
Behind the swinging panel inside of the right-hand door are some of my grandfather's old tools, including his slide rules. I don't use these tools often, but chose to mount them in my cabinet to honor his memory.
The carcass, drawer fronts, and tool mounts are made of African mahogany. The back panels and plane till are baltic birch plywood, and the front panel has a maple veneer. The drawer sides and backs are solid maple, and the bottoms are plywood. The finish used on the carcass is Arm-R-Seal wipe on polyurethane (satin), while I used spray-on lacquer for the tool mounts.
The drawers are through-dovetailed, and the drawer fronts are cut from a single piece of mahogany to create a continuous grain appearance across all three drawers. The cabinet is mounted to the wall with two large lag bolts (hidden behind the saw till and plane till) which are driven into studs.
I do not have plans for this build, as I designed it on pencil and paper only, specifically to fit these tools. However, I can provide the rough dimensions. The cabinet is approximately 25" wide, 30" tall, the center section is almost 8" deep, and the doors are around 4" deep.
I am currently finishing a separate video dedicated to the saw till, which I plan to post to this channel soon.
Thanks for watching. Feel free to leave a comment with your thoughts, and don't forget to subscribe if you like content like this!

This is the kind of video that needs to be on YT recommendations. No music, no noise just simply hard work in silence
Thanks so much! I would be thrilled if this ended up on YT recommendations 😂
@@dkbuilds Good news! That's where I saw it.
Me to !
Greetings from 🇨🇭
And me.. Your a credit to the trade.
Me too guys.
What I like about this carpenter is that he is quiet and focused! The work transferred from his heart and head into his masterpiece! Great work!
Thank you very much for the kind words, friend!
Dude is going FULL THROTTLE with that backsaw. Like 3 strokes to the line.
Yolo! 😂
@@dkbuilds And even featured a slight oversaw on the drawer closeup, reminding us that with handmade, imperfect is perfect. So great.
@tyvek05 well you kinda have to settle since nothing you make will be perfect.
I was literally thinking the same thing. Had me clenching lmao
@tyvek05 google the Japanese design theory of wabi sabi you will be enlightened 👍
After watching the video advert i was still skeptical. But when i finally downloaded the plans czcams.com/users/postUgkxZF0EMnrujZvqHhGkxiz559uIABJWR9TG i was very impressed. The whole plan was just as you said in the video. Thank you very much. I now have a large and valuable collection for my woodworks. This is great!
Wood can exhibit weakness or reduced strength due to various factors. Some common reasons for wood to become weak include:
Moisture: Wood is highly susceptible to moisture absorption, which can lead to swelling, warping, and decay. When wood absorbs water, it can lose its structural integrity and become weak.
Decay: Wood is prone to decay when exposed to fungi, bacteria, or insects that break down its cellular structure. Decay can significantly weaken the wood, making it more brittle and less able to bear loads.
Insect infestation: Wood-boring insects such as termites, beetles, and carpenter ants can tunnel through the wood, compromising its strength and structural integrity.
Aging: Over time, wood can naturally degrade due to exposure to environmental factors like sunlight, temperature changes, and oxygen. This aging process can cause wood to become weaker and more prone to damage.
Knots: Knots are areas where branches grew out of the trunk, creating a localized disruption in the wood grain. Knots can weaken the wood since they often have different density and strength characteristics than the surrounding wood.
Defects and damage: Wood can develop defects or sustain damage from impacts, stresses, or improper handling. These defects, such as cracks, splits, or checks, can weaken the wood and compromise its load-bearing capacity.
Poor quality or low-density wood: The quality of wood can vary based on factors like the tree species, growth conditions, and harvesting methods. Low-density wood or wood with inherent structural flaws can be weaker than high-quality, dense wood.
Improper drying: If wood is not properly dried before use, it may retain moisture, leading to dimensional instability and reduced strength. The internal stresses caused by uneven drying can result in warping, twisting, or cracking, making the wood weaker.
It's worth noting that the strength of wood can also depend on its specific species, density, and the direction in which forces are applied. Different types of wood have varying inherent strengths and properties.
At last a real craftsman using hand tools and skill. No plethora of electric hand tools and gadgets, no inane background music and commentary. Just the sound of wood being worked and hard skilful graft being done :) A joy to watch and so good to see a such a young and skilful guy keeping the craft of cabinet making alive.
Thank you, TopMarks! I'm glad you enjoyed the video! :)
Nice job. I like several things: your silent video; honoring your grandfather and your precision. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks so much for watching and sharing the kind words Joseph. Cheers!
Who in the world would downvote such a dedicated work. I'm really impressed. Great job!
I'm not sure! To each their own I guess. Thank you for watching NTR!
People that use deck screws for joinery...thats who......🤣
Haters. I don’t work in wood, and I was mesmerized by this work. Superb!
Wonderful build. I enjoyed watching someone so young who has mastered the old school hand made craftsmanship.
Thank you Thomas! Not sure I've mastered it yet, but I am always trying to improve my skills. Maybe one day I will be a true master :)
@@dkbuilds The only correct answer.

The precision in this video is like a drug for my OCD. What a pleasure to watch.
Thanks Alen! I think I have a touch of OCD myself which contributed to how well this cabinet turned out hah
I love the idea of using magnets to hold the planes instead of having them sit in there at an angle like you usually see. GREAT WORK MAN
Thanks Nicoals 👍 I'm glad you liked it!
I started to watch a simple object being built exquisitely. Somewhere along the line, I realized I was immersed in a symphony,
It was an awesome experience. I've saved it to my play list so I can deepen that experience.
Thank you so much not only for sharing your build but for the craft you put into the video.
Wow thank you John! I'm so glad that all my effort in building and video production paid off for you. I really appreciate you watching and commenting!
That was amazing! Putting the tools in their proper place at the end must have felt so good. Watching the video was very relaxing, almost soothing. I loved that there was no music, no commentary, no noise, just working. Brilliant!
Excellent, I'm so glad you liked the video fradrig! I feel satisfied every time I get a tool out or put a tool back in the cabinet :)
Very nice work. Will be inspiration for many viewers!

Perfection in every way. It’s usually the elderly master craftsmen that have the skill and patience to create this kind of masterpiece. I applaud you and your skill. 👍🇦🇺

That 22 minutes flew by. Great work.
Excellent, I'm glad it wasn't too slow paced for you. Thanks for watching Esra!
I predict this will soon be (if not already) the 2nd nicest thing you've ever built. Well done!
Thanks Todd! I've got a jewelry box video coming out soon that might take the cake... Stay tuned!
I love how all the flat head screws line up with each other. Nice touch.
Thanks! I'm a little bit OCD and it's super satisfying to have them all line up :)
It''s called "clocking" or "timing" your screws. It was one of those things done in older times that was considered a mark of a true good craftsman! Seeing clocked screws on something in an antique shop always makes me happy!
You can see them on old handsaws too, bonus points is the saw screws are split, chances are you're on to a good tool then.
I hate slotted screws and try to avoid them at all cost, but you did it right!
I'll be honest they weren't great to work with, I only did it for the fancy factor. Super happy with how they turned out, but it was way harder than it would have been otherwise!
@@dkbuilds My dad and I restored a 1933 chevy when I was a kid. After getting it back from the painter, he was reinstalling the metal trim on the soft top roof - with slotted screws.
You guessed it - the screwdriver slipped and he scratched the living shit out of this brand new bitchin' paint job. I have never heard him scream louder.
Swore off them ever since.
obtw, stunning work brother!
What a beautiful piece, great job. I wish everyone on this platform was as talented as you
Thank you so much for the very kind words!
That saw till is too cool!
Thanks so much! I have a separate video dedicated to the saw till. Thank you for watching!
WoW! Beautiful!!! My dad use to say,” A mans a fool, who doesn’t build a shed for his favorite tool.” You built a castle for yours! Great workmanship. Love the dovetails.
Thanks so much JC, I love that quote of your dads! Thanks for watching :)
I'm retiring in a couple of years and spending my money now on good tools, and intend to take up woodworking after 40+ years in the oil and gas construction industry . This project you've shown is where I'D like to start.
I've just found your channel and love it THANKS
Excellent, sounds like a great retirement plan! Good luck on your woodworking journey, and thanks for watching my video!

Gorgeous! And I love the "history compartment" with the slide rules and (presumably family) heirloom tools.
Thank you so much Lawson! Yes they are heirlooms from my grandfather. I'm glad you liked it :)
@@dkbuilds I was actually wondering if you used these. Wouldn't have surprised me given your approach to using hand tools over machines and power tools for most of the work shown here.

Love the intent of each spot. The care. I can't wait to have the confidence to work with hardwood.
Thank you Dusty! You can do it! In a lot of ways it's more fun to work with hardwood than soft wood. I always bump my pine pieces into something leaving dents all over the place that I don't notice until after I've applied stain... not really a problem with hard woods!
Stunning.
Thank you!
Lovely work. I love the magnet idea.
Thank you Adrian!
Amazing job. I admire the attention to detail and like the section dedicated to your grandfather’s tools.
Thank you very much John! My grandfather always said "a job worth doing is a job worth doing well", which I took to heart especially on this project.
When you feeling lazy to get that project started and you watch the detail that went into this and it was purely for organizational purposes only, it's inspiring
😅I won't lie, I spent an insane amount of time planning this! Tons of research, sketching, laying tools out, etc. Glad it paid off!
No mass production system could ever match a skilled woodworker, this is art and thank you for this amazing display of craftsmenship. Outstanding work.
