KORG has just published the OPSIX, a new "altered" 6 Operator FM Synthesizer that reinvents DX-style synthesis. 5 synthesis types per operator, 40 algorithms with the option to build your own, 23 available waveforms to name only a few of the highlights of the new KORG OPSIX.
I got a loan unit to check out. Here is a big sound demo of the new KORG OPSIX. More videos will follow soon.

Korg is bringing it. This and the Wavestate along with the "log" series of synths, creates a formidable lineup.
And now also with the mod wave
Hey, I know this is a sound demo and all, but these are great improvisations you've made. I've been enjoying them a lot. Cheers!
The sound is so flexible... Amazing.
That sounds good! Great demo, thank you! (FX are lush!)
It deserves a bigger keyboard (or a desk module option).
The most interesting synth release in a LONG time.
This and Wavestate. And Cobalt8, too.
‘Digital’ synth release I’d agree with you, sounds great for sound design
It has some serious anger managment issues i like it a lot
Fantastic sound design. Bravo. !
Incredible sound. FM is so much better than subtractive.
COME AT ME BROS!
Both are great!
Both are great. But I do love so much FM 😍
The FM decade has just started after about 25 years of subtractive. I love it too btw
Have to say that is the truth. After hearing a pro1, matrix12, arp2600, Jupiter 6 that fm when programmed well it can sound better. But you have to put a lot of work to make it move. The opsix dissapointed me. No reason for me to ditch a DX11. Checkout the prologue, dx fm through analog filters and 2 vco's. Yum yum
@@timandtheocean what do you mean by better? If you prefer the characteristics of fm, sure it will sound better for you.
I like subtractive as well, hell I can listen to sawtooth waves, even unfiltered and I would love it. I personally don’t like FM. Cleaner and more “realistic” sounds dont really move me. But I do appreciate the technology behind all of that.
It’s just a matter of taste I guess, I prefer the raw synthetic sounds of subtractive. I will acknowledge tho that FM is technologically more complex.
This is so magical. What a demo.
Do you have any album?
Nice.Pads are good.
Korg is always in the game and is capable to gives us some nice new machines and features !
Now i'm waiting for a new drum machine whicih can rivalized with Elektrons product !
Great demo as always !
Peace !
Thanks Eric :) exactly, I would go further and say Korg is the company that brings always in synthesis is a new twist. minilogue with the digital engine, now with near modular FM engine :)
Wow thanks so much for putting this out. I’ve had my eye on this for a long time. Would you say the programming interface is easy to understand and use?
thanks Dustin. The programming interface is way simpler and intuitive than any other FM Synthesizer I played. FM Synthesis is still a complex topic but they manage it to make it more accessible. :)
Korg need to incorporate this into any successor to the Kronos. Fabulous synth but without an aftertouch 5 octave keyboard it’s a tougher call! 😛
ohhh nice
thanks Robert :)
Hum, the price is likely to come down a bit in a few months because it’s a little more expensive than the wavestate or the minilogue XD that share a similar chassis. At $800 usd it’s a little on the high side for a digital 37 keys synth with no after touch. For those who are looking for an FM synth VST that has a very similar interface check the Sytrus plugin .
The wave state is on sale that’s why there both the same price
I've got one on order....and if I need extra octaves and aftertouch....will control it from a Virus TI it will be mounted directly over.
@@holygeneration7 Yes....it's a little beestie
A hardware FM synth that has has an interface that isn't horrible!? Take my money!
I WANT!! This would pair well with my wavestate. Wish it was a module instead because I hate their keys, same plastic toy keys it looks like from the wavestate.
I would pay $$$ for a great feeling 61 or 76-key board with this AND the Wavestate all on the front panel hhehehehehhe
To be honest for years i've been considering getting another FM synthesizer that is more complex than my Yamaha PSS 680. But THIS thing here really is exactly what i wanted. An actually approachable and versatile modern incarnation of the still very under-appreciated and fascinating FM Synthesis.
The price of OPSIX is twice of that of wavestate, quite interesting.
How many voices? Korg is so light on voices & sequencer steps for the past 10 years for no reason usually.
32 voices in total
@@synthanatomy nice
I want it for the sake of it’s supposed simplicity. But it’s hard to justify when you already own a Yamaha Mod-x
I really want this,, but I heard the keys feel cheap. Are they on par with the monologue?
This whole series has the shittiest keybeds (I have a Wavestate and have been wanting an Opsix - these are synths that ask you to play with them, but they really don’t ask you to play them). I can’t believe they waited this long to make a desktop model.
@@swid_swid_swid oh I actually ended up getting one. Absolutely love the sounds on it. The keybed does feel cheap, but it’s still a great synth
I'd spend the money just for the sound that comes in at 16:40 that sort of sound is a bit of a pain to program on a subtractive synth.
'Hello...How are you? Have you been alright, through all those lonely lonely lonely lonely lonely nights. That's what I'd say, if you'd pick up that telephone.'
How much fatter and better sounding this is compared to all the 4-op Elektron and Yamaha boards cannot be understated! Now how about a workstation with 8 tracks and 64 steps like with the Digitone Korg!
コルグの新型シンセはいかがですか?!◎
Mmm...this one or Cobalt8? Or maybe MEGA FM or BARP 2600? Choices, choices...
absolutely choices over choices :) Cobalt8 vs OPSIX, well interesting question. I need to investigate deeper in the OPSIX :)
@@synthanatomy Ah, I am thinking Argon8 or OPSIX? I know their synthesis methods are different, but still. Somehow I like both. :)
This was interesting, until I heard you cannot layer/stack/seperate by midi channel multitimbral the sounds at all, like you can on the old dx7II E!< TX816, tx802, TX816.
If you could this would be the synth of the year with epic moving synths and layers, and basses, and pads, and electric pianos, and EDM techno tab industrial new age sounds.
What made those great were you could split and layer, by sound, velocity, not range, etc. to really come up with more interesting things then one sound at a time.
Of course this has efx, sequencer, and way more sound design elements.
Korg needs to release a full 61 key after touch version, with 16 way layer, multitimbral on all 16 channels, and 128 polyphony.
I would easily snap that up. for $999.
As it is, I think the MODX, is more versatile for fm only with its 8 operator, stacking splitting, efx, sequencer and arp.
But no after touch, and most importantly, way harder to program with very few actual knobs and buttons.
who else suddenly wanted taco bell @21:40
Can you load DX7 programs into the OP6ix?
not yet, but I already ask them to add it. Maybe they will make an update with DX7 program support :) Let's hope :)
@@synthanatomy You *can* load DX7 sounds in! However, there are some limitations. Specifically, they can only be original DX7 sounds (no DX7II, etc.), and you have to load in a full bank of 32, not individual sounds. More importantly, they don't really sound _exactly_ like DX7 sounds since there are aspects of the voice architecture that are different, but it's a great place to start if you have DX sounds that you like.
@@deanwalliss8739 how do you achieve this?
The only FM synth that matches Korg OPSIX is the Yamaha FS1R.
Is this the same FM engine in the Oasys and Kronos. Anyone know ? 🙄
different beast. Some features are similar others not.
My single complaint about that synth is lack of built-in aftertouch (come on, Korg!). Other than that, it's fantastic.
OK. One more complaint: no expression pedal input (come on, Korg, this is FM, it's begging to be modulated! :-)
the keybed has no aftertouch but the engine has poly-aftertouch :)
@@synthanatomy Yes, I know, but it will hurt each time I apply pressure on the keys and there's no response, unlike on my good old DX7s :-)
Mono-aftertouch should be a mandatory minumum for any FM synth with keyboard.
Thanks for a great demo!
@@synthanatomy that makes even less sense. Korg makes classics I own but saves money in the oddest ways for the past few years.
@@BlisterHiker Agreed ! Channel AT is such an easy technology, what could it possibly cost more on the product ? 50-75 €. Instead, one has to connect an AT Keyboard (Keystep, for instance). That is just a shame.
@@pontram True, lack of AT keybed in Opsix is a shame, and on top of that there's no expression pedal input. Mono AT is practically as easy as kitchen scale one can buy for 20 $ or €. I don't get that politics.
Release date?
what I hear this month :)
Christ, started this at 3:50 something, and that really hurt my ears.
FM rules again ?
FM synthesis has always been a topic. Just a very difficult and uncomfortable one for many musicians. Korg solves the whole thing very nicely and intuitively in OPSIX. Korg clearly shows that you shouldn't forget FM synthesis :)
What can it do what a MODX can’t?
Saving space
I'm 100% sold on the guts. My question: how piss poor is the build quality?
If it is as poor as, say the Poly-800's build quality, you will use it for approx. 40 years (I believe that mine will reach this anniversary in 2025 with all original parts except the internal battery). Those plastic bombers are indestructable.
How much is it?

Twice what it should be. It's a programmable DX7.
It sounds superb, but I'll not buy until they release this in the same serious form factor as presented during NAMM.
As I see you, you are not the only one who wants the other form factor :)
@@holygeneration7 it's a different design than the prototype: instead of 61, it has only 37 keys and more compact
Its pretty sounding , but not 800 euro pretty sounding , with my 30+ year old fm2 ( 8 carrier wave) and an outboard fx i get most of these sounds minus filters , plus yamaha had multitimbrality in the 80s
