• FM Synthesis: A New Ex...
Daniel Fisher, Sweetwater's FM fanatic, reveals the opsix, Korg's fresh, modern approach to FM. Their “altered” 6-operator FM synthesis makes the vastly capable FM sound generation method accessible to any musician who has ever played a classic analog synth. Equipped with an easy-to-use 6-fader operator level mixer, 6-knob ratio mixer, six data entry rotary encoders, and a flexible sound engine that takes you well beyond basic FM, the opsix broadens the potential of digital synthesis.

I feel like hiring Daniel Fisher was the best move Sweetwater ever made. There isn't a synth in their catalog that this man hasn't absolutely sold me on.
For real man he is a genius
I really enjoy his demos. I’ve learned a lot. Agreed- SW made a stellar hire.
Yes
His demos are always great. Very consistent.
You’ve explained FM better and more clearly than I’ve ever heard before.
You’re a brilliant teacher and splendid educator.
Wow, Keith. Thank you. My main goal for this video was to finally put an end to the misconceptions about FM.There's so much more to be explored. Thanks for watching! -_Daniel_
@@sweetwater I agree. Every review online has been pretty good at explaining FM but yours was exceptionally good. Maybe too good LOL :)
@@sweetwater I understood the theory from other videos, but this one really does a great job of explaining how different ratios create different sounds!
He really is. Daniel I watch your videos even when I don't care about the instrument and it makes me want to buy lol. But this really seems like something I need now.
It helps that the Opsix has a pretty user friendly interface. No serious menu diving here.
Daniel gets a lot of love on this channel, but it’s so deserved it’s crazy. Every video I watch has so much enthusiasm for the product, but also deep and fundamental knowledge to really convey how each instrument he demos, functions. And he’s a hell of a player too. Sweetwater Daniel Fisher videos have become my gold standard for synth rundowns.
This is probably the best video I've ever seen on FM synthesis. Start with a great story and then go to the most simple basic level and explain how it works so well with the real time examples. Really just absolutely great.
This has to be the best bar none, description of fm synthesis. I understood it, but I understand it better now.
I agree. Between this video and loopop's video on the synth I have received a crash course in FM synthesis. I am looking forward to the synth clips follow up.
I got to say every demo of a synth by Daniel Fisher has improved my understanding of synthesis. He really knows what he is doing.
Why has no one explained this better to novices, than you in 50 years.
Daniel is the man!
Yes! Love this video. I just started learning FM and I love it and understand it better now myself.
We've been waiting 40 years for this synth! Could have done with your great explanation 40 years ago too!
A shame Yamaha didn’t make parameter tweaking so easy 40 years ago as well.
FM demystified; kudos to Korg for implementing it right, but also Daniel - who is such a great teacher!
Finally someone who explained properly FM synthesis for us the NOOBS! :)
FM makes subtractive analogs sound so good when included in the same mix, they really complement one another. And this has to be the best hardware FM synth I've seen. The UI is amazingly simple. And 6 OP? I need this.
I do wonder if an OPEIGHT cometh though :D
I wish this was 8-op instead, but I can live with 6
Never heard FM described and demonstrated so quickly and painlessly. I think this synth will be my first trip back to it in 15 years.
I do enjoy the little story at the beginning for additional story/color.
Daniel "I Bet Ya Wish'yer Synths Sounded This Good" Fisher is at it again. Absolute legend m8
I know it has it’s “it doesn’t sound like a DX-7” critics, but to them I say, keep your DX-7 and buy this for its real-time parameter tweaking.
Why would someone want this to sound like DX? It’s modern and different.
So glad I didn't end up buying a used DX7... finally, a modern alternative. And from one of my favorite brands. Stoked.
Have you ever played a real DX7? It's got one of the best synth keybeds of all time
I have two of them dx7 and dx7fd gray mater they are awesome.
RICKY GARCIA I upgraded my dx7s to an sy77 and I believe it had the same key bed. Absolutely agree, best I’ve played. Funny that it comes from Yamaha who’s gear is so user hostile in every other way.
@@TheBiggerNoise always wanted a sy77 do have a sy85 it needs a right volume slider I loose the right channel about halfway up.
I got a dx7iiFD about half a year ago. It's definitely a good find when you get one
FM synthesis reborn! Great video. Clear explanation. I remember when the DX 7 killed analog for a while. What I didn't like about the DX was the limited patch storage and the difficulty in user sound creation,, forcing many owners to purchase new sounds made by professional sound designers. That limitation led to FM's demise when multi-sample synths came along, culminating in samples of acoustic, analog, and FM waveforms. Then we had a revival of discrete analog. Korg reimagined FM synthesis to put sound design back into the hands of users. Fantastic!
Another gem of a synth from Korg and a gem of a demo courtesy of Daniel and Sweetwater. This thing looks and sounds amazing. But what I'm happiest about is the fact that after watching this video and hearing Daniel explain FM algorithm diagrams, I understand them now. I have a Korg Volca FM synthesizer that I can't wait to get home and play with now. Shout out to Sweetwater and Daniel for the killer demos and for helping this budding synth geek wrap his head around FM some more! 🤙🤙🤙
Thank you for the nice comments, Brian!

No nonsense no stupid animation, just to the point bringing the best out.

Thank you 🙏
I remember the DX7 very well. I was in my 20s back in the 80s and I loved The Police. When Sting went solo his synth player used a DX7. Then I started notice so many bands using it. It was very popular.
I really like Daniel Fisher videos! The explanations are so great, I think this is really one of the best demos and explanations how FM synthesis works while presenting this awesome synth.
Thank you, mudi2000a. I can't wait to create several Synth Clips episodes on FM now that this excellent teaching tool exists. Thanks for watching! -_Daniel_

Korg hits it out of the park...now how about a 61 keyer? Man, you can't beat Daniel's videos.
I never understood FM. Everyone always breezed through it like I knew what they were talking about. After watching this, it clicked. Now the carrier and modulators make total sense. Thanks man.
Now to get those sliders and knobs on my DX9... if only.
Watch from 29:07 to 30:35. If that doesn't make you want to buy this synth then it is probably not the synth for you. Great stuff Daniel, love the sounds and what you're playing. Lots of great info to dive into!
Hard to admit that I learned more from Daniel and Sweetwater than from Korg or even Yamaha about FM. It’s kind of silly when you think about it that the originators of the technology didn’t bother to try and educate musicians more. In any case, much thanks Daniel.
I knew I could rely on Daniel's video to uncover the best sounds one can coax out of this thing!
I can't wait to see your future FM OPSIX based Synth Clip episodes, Daniel. Great review, this is an exciting synth!

Thank you Daniel, I finally received my OPSIX (from Sweetwater & Alan F.)yesterday and your demo has taken my knowledge of FM to the next level. Hopefully I’ll remember to eat the rest of this weekend...it sounds amazing!

This was an amazing lesson on FM Synth. You blew me away with that jazz guitar sound. Really appreciate your videos!
Korg is really killin' it lately... Minilogue XD, Wavestate, now this... very impressed! :)
I feel like your explanation of this will make playing and making patches with my Yamaha SY77 easier now..
Oh, that lovely Twin Peaks pad at 34:19 and that awesome DX-7 emulation at 36:49!!!!
I love this the more I see & hear it! Great demo of the Korg OPSIX!
I love Korg! The best sounds out there in my opinion. I have the Micro X from 2008. A small but powerful synth like this one. This new Opsix is a BEAST! Great demo.
Those envelopes 📈 on a modulator are key.. totally spot on!

This is a great review of this synth. Many years ago I had a DX7. Now I want a Korg opsix.
Its a nice little synth the more unearthly sounds a synthesizer has the more i like them this is nice ...
a brilliant explanation on how FM synthesis works and well done to Korg for creating this Korg OPSIX
I like this tutorial, its really passionate in a serious way, not only advertising a product. And I like the story of the Stuttgart Music Store. For me it was a MS20 in my hometown Nürnberg, some years earlier....but otherwise same same.
@Daniel Fisher> Patch Barracks was The go to place for state of the art audio equipment `79~`81 . Thank you for your service.
Daniel Fisher, you're the man! Great video on FM and OPSIX. I was really thinking about getting one before watching this. After - I'll be getting it. Good job!
If you choose the algorithm with all 6 operators as carriers, and set the ratio knobs to 1 through 6, the sliders act as drawbars 3 to 8 of an organ
As a piano player I enjoy the tactile nature of turning knobs and getting immediate responses. The variables seem endless. Nice job! Very in-depth review.
If Big D is doing a demo I'm in.Top , non generic ,no nonsense honest demos from a guy that knows his onions.

I learned how to do the 'keyboard filter-tracking dance' from watching Synth Clips!
Honestly and I don't say this lightly this may be the best thing Korg has ever done at least sound wise....
Before I thought the Oasis PCI was the best gear I ever heard sound wise but this is much better.
The sound is unreal very creamy and very thick.....
Hi Sebastian. After the video shoot was over, I told everyone there that it was one of the easiest and most fun demos I've made. I could have written soundtracks, jingles, and atmospheric songs all day long. -_Daniel_
@@sweetwater Yeah man what a dream machine Korg needs to make a full sized keyboard version of this....
I’m buying one of these this month.
Knobs and sliders make FM synthesis much more intuitive than the traditional menu-diving. I have a Stereoping knob controller for my TX81Z and editing is a lot like this new Korg. But what does the filter sound like? And what does the wave folder sound like? Very exciting new synth!
TX81Z forever. That thing has this rough digital haze that gives it a special vibe.
yeah this is what im contemplating the last days aswell.. the TX81Z/DX11 has such a bodily, and earthly sound to it that somewhat makes the metallic and alien sounds coming out of it 'realistic'. getting both overcomplicates my studio but i cant see myself selling the DX11.
What's the name of the box you using
You sir are a very knowledgeable fm teacher. Dx7 is an awesome synth. But modification in a small led screen makes it very painful. Using Dexed vst makes it a little better. Opsix looks like a smart solution for FM synthesis with tangible sliders and knobs plus arp/seq and filters this is the macFm synth of all Fm synths. Youre playing is awesome and I like the dark tone harmonics lo-fi style.
Ordered. Thanks, Daniel!
Fantastic demo Daniel! You’re a true rockstar!
This was an excellent demonstration Daniel. The color coded sliders and knobs are a very nice touch. Though, in my opinion, Korg should have kept the oscilloscope as an alternate screen function. It's just nice to have.
OpSix has an oscilloscope screen *and* a spectrum analyzer screen. You just have to manually turn them on.
@@dyacktman oh great. Thought it was an odd thing to leave out. With 6 operators, the waveform could get chaotic fast but an oscilloscope is helpful for a carrier or two and a modulator. Helped me learn a lot about FM.
Just imagine how crazy the waveform would look with fm
Nice demo. Thanks!
Great stuff Daniel, thanks for this.
Between this and the Mega FM despite the disaster 2020 has been we got two of the best hardware FM synths ever made.

As someone who has owned a DX7 and mastered programming one. This is great for those who dont have the patience. FM is a wonderful form of synthesis. And can produce everything from a kick drum to a wonderful special effect.
This sounds amazing! I’ll take one of these and a Wavestate!
Maybe in your Synth Clips you can show how to get the drums sounds out of an FM synth -- that was surprising!
Daniel you are great! A music engineering lesson!
Looks and sounds great
I bought an OpSix because of this video. I struggled with my DX7s in the early years, but this little machine is a dream for me. Thanks Daniel for doing this video !!
You explained everything very good but I have one suggestion: put the sounds in the beginning.
It's very interesting to know how a new synthesizer sounds and then one can decide to go deep, imo.
I had to scroll to around half an hour to hear some of the good stuff....
Well Daniel...you did it again. A fantastic demonstration of FM in both sound and teaching. Very clear to me, though I have been designing in FM for the last few years. But only those with great understanding can teach, and the teaching was excellent. I hope the OPsix has a way of adjusting envelopes and LFOs for more than one operator at a time, very time consuming having 6 operators and adjusting two envelops for each one. would have liked to see an ADSR on the panel. Very nice vocal pad at 38:00, try and make that one on a subtractive!
Almost every time I watch a Daniel Fisher Sweetwater video, I end up rearranging my Sweetwater wish list. 🤦🏼♂️🤷🏼♂️🙂
The effects section.... Ohhh my god im so gonna get this synth, I'm hoping for a module version with at least a 32-step sequencer
Great unit, wish is wasn't discontinued! It seems really approachable, not sure what would be a good new/current alternative to FM with a similar price point that is also so readily understandable.
enjoyable and interesting review, thank you :-)
Daniel is a great soundesigner...i rememzber the sounds he did for the mininova, great explainations done here, thank u.

Wow this really helped me appreciate MOD-7. The Ratio parameter goes to 64 instead of 32 and the higher internal sample rate helps curb aliasing.
Super useful tip about exploring presets by mixing carriers levels. That'll also help me refine my own creations.
Shame it isnt the 61 key like the prototype but very cool none the less !
Maybe they will release an "Opsix plus" or something in future with more keys.
@@Qjimbo They should call it the opsix-one.
I hope they do a Wavestate EX as well, with 61 keys and aftertouch.
@@AlfaRomeoQ That is exactly what Korg have advertised. WaveState SE. 61 keys, aftertouch and better quality material. I don't have the slightest doubt that OpSix SE will follow soon.

When and where was this advertised??? If that is true, then waiting is a no brainer. If not a reality, then I guess just go ahead and grab one of these, the price ain't too bad...
This IS s great video. Very entertaining! I'm a soft synth guy myself because money, but I had a DX27 and a TX81Z back in the day. The interface on this keyboard is pretty appealing.
Really great demonstration of this synth!
Looks like a fantastically usable interface. I am having a really hard time figuring out what synth I should get, but this will have strong consideration! I though an FM synth would be much less approachable.
I’ve been on the fence for sometime on purchasing this synth. This video Definitely swayed my decision. I finally pulled the trigger this morning.
