On this channel we like to do a lot of dogfighting most videos are some sort of dogfight between 2 different aircraft as we explore their different capabilities. From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.
If you enjoy war thunder or Microsoft flight simulator 2020 or even dogfighting in Battlefield 2042, consider getting yourself into Digital Combat Simulator by Eagle Dynamics, the Combat side of Aviation with the BVR and Dogfights really provides a different and interesting perspective on aviation. You can fly all kinds of combat aircraft including the F-16, F-15, F-14, JF-17, Su-27, Mig-29, Mirage and the F-18 Hornet along with many other aircraft and helicopters like the Ka-50 and Mi-8.

Hi GS! Love the vids! SERIOUS question: Could you not pull the F-14 vertical sharply and use rudder and the same side engine to literally yaw around 180°? I thought that it may work because your lift surfaces area acting as an airbrake (like a Cobra maneuver) but momentum carried you along that lateral vector for a short time. During that time, I thought you might be able to "flip a yuee." Your thoughts?

I was a little surprised that Maverick called out that maneuver because it's a real dogfighting technique we sometimes do in dogfightings. I used it flying C-model Eagles in a pinch but you have to master it or you can outmaneuver yourself. It was also height and speed dependent because of stalling, recovery time and possible loss of departure. Loss a fighter in a CAT-A training cycle will get you grounded.
You had a pretty good approach and your explanation was on target. You use this in close quarter ACM battle, one circles, to make an unconventional move and usually will only get one bite of the apple because if your opponent notice, they will counter it if you try it a second time...

I’m surprised that it works on an F-15, the thrusters are next to each other on the centreline, the differential would seem very minimal compare to an F-14 with wider set thrusters.

@@miltechmoto I thought it was a really cleaver bit of writing to include this in the dogfight scene. Knowing that it was Iceman’s jet wash that lead to the engine compressor stall and ultimately the flat spin that killed Goose, the split throttle manoeuvre gave Maverick an opportunity to redeem himself by showing that he’s mastered control of the jet with Goose’s son in the back seat. This subtle detail would be missed by most expect for F-14 and Top Gun enthusiasts.

I would like to point out that the B model has an asymmetric thrust limiter that you need to switch off to do this stuff. It is a guarded switch adjacent to the engine crank switch on the left panel. The A model doesn't have this.
I asked Dave "Bio" Baranek about this maneuver at the EAA in Oshkosh a few weeks ago and he definitely showed his apprehension. He agrees that it is possible and can be effective, but in the A model it is an extremely risky move and he would be pissed if his pilot did something like that. He loved seeing it in the movie as a varsity move by Maverick to show his extreme skill with the Tomcat, though.

Differential thrust is really a form of primitive TVC, only just in the yaw plane. So it's essentially 1D TVC, but with judicious use of rudder and maneuvering flaps, you can probably turn it into 'almost' 2D TVC. I'd definitely work on that skill until you know just how to ride it, because once you got it down it's kinda like turning your Tomcat into a Raptor Tomcat hybrid, like a Tomptor, or maybe a Raptom, or even a...

The F-14 was an Aircraft that could accomplish amazing thing as long as the Pilot has the Skill and the BALLS to try it the maneuvers. In the mid-90s Grumman started a project to update the Tomcats beyond the F14D and into the ST21 and Grumman actually had one demonstrator build by 1998-99 that had new Engines, Avionics and more responsive controlling surfaces that along with a poor man vector thrust system that relied more on the amount of thrust going out instead of the surfaces used by engine nozzles to sent the thrust the way the pilot wants to go. The Split Throttle move in Top Gun Maverick is something that I believe only the VERY BEST Tomcat Pilots would even have Dared to Attempt back in the days when the F14 protected the Fleet from enemy aircraft in the high seas. I was in the Navy and worked on Avionics Systems and I contacted a few Tomcat pilot that I know about the Splitting the Throttles and they told me that some had tried it during their time at Top Gun and it was Technique that was used but not recommended because it put allot of stress of the airframe but if was to be used as a last resort move in COMBAT ONLY!

I know the Tomcat gets a lot of love, but I’ve become sickened over the last couple of months discovering how many people f***ing hate it for some reason. Reading some of the comments on here has been sobering AF.
I feel like a lot of the disdain for the original film’s cheese and inaccuracies undeservedly rubbed off on the F-14, merely by association. People tore the new film apart before they even watched it. As soon as the Tomcat was shown at the end of the first teaser, there were already disparaging comments being posted. Must be Dick Cheney fans (10 points to anyone who gets the relevance of the reference).

The maneuver that Maverick does is real btw. It's called a Herbst turn. It's a variation of a cobra maneuver. It uses differential thrust to induce a skidded roll during a cobra maneuver in order to more quickly get nose on by changing the angle of attack rapidly.

Kinda cool. Now imagine a tomcat with actual thrust vectoring and modern engines (ofc airframe out of polymer thing instead of steel n shit) a d you've got a great jet. I always wanted to see an interceptor variant of the F-14 though, AIM-54 in Hypersonic And a better radar would be lethal, even to the F-15 and MiG-31

@@spinningsquare1325 Yeah. However, I think you could modernize the F-15 even longer. The F-15 is probably the best multi-role jet of it’s class. Its good in the one circle, its great in the two circle, it can carry a plethora of missiles. I think a stealth variant of the F-15 (Slanted rudders, less flat surfaces, etc) would be extremely lethal. Probably would be more effective than the F-35 due to it’s dogfighting capability. Dunno if the airforce would want to spend that much on a jet though

Those rear shots showing the differential horizontal tails are nice to look at. Those horizontal tails are the same size as the wing of an A-4 Skyhawk. Max carrier launch weight was 74,349 lbs with an empty weight of 41,353 for an F-14D. Max trap was 54,000pounds. 6 AIM-54 was 73,329lbs with EFTs. 2 Sparrow/2 Sidewinder and 4 Phoenix-loadout launched at 72,646lbs went into combat at 64,172lbs reaching 1,052 knots at 35,000ft. Then lob off your Phoenix(4000 pounds plus at least 1500lbs in weapons rails) and you still have Sparrow and Sidewinder to clean up with. That combo can do 692 knots at Sea Level(SL). With weapons pylons on the gloves and the gun it could do 740 kts at SL, 1,196kts@35,000feet.. F-14 was considered clean even with the glove weapons rails as every fleet aircraft came so equipped. They were changed as some point as well, redesigned giving a different frontal look.
