I’m 70 years old, a former marine engineering fitter. I was introduced to wood turning at school at about twelve years old. Never did turning again till my 50 s when I needed to turn a bobbin to fit into a flexible flue liner I had to fit. Bought the cheapest lathe with the cheapest tools and without tuition made the bobbin. Live in the middle of nowhere ( by north east Englands standards), far from tuition and wasn’t using internet at the time. Went on to dabble with turning occasionally with some pleasant results. Eventually, 3 years ago got a small but well made lathe and a set of much better tools. Managed some really nice pieces but only with great difficulty and a lot of time. Seldom produced long shavings. Frequently had snatches, and many frustrations. Access to lots of sycamore and yew encouraged me to persevere. I made little progress. Even buying a high quality, cryogenic gouge made only a little difference.
This video has dealt with all the fundamentals of using a bowl gouge. Plain speech, clear pronunciation, no one trying to be a comedian, no irritating background music, no superfluous nonsense full of Americanisms. just plain, simple, straightforward speech and detail with common sense as well as a high quality video. I’ve watched numerous others but none deal with the elementary essentials like this video. It really is one of the very best wood turning videos I’ve ever watched . You not only possess the skills and experience but you also have first class communication skills. If it wasn’t 02.08 hours here. I’d go into my garage and practice what I’ve just watched. With most other videos I want to stop them and ask questions. With this one I just want to get in with it. There are two elements to learning: a learner must UNDERSTAND and REMEMBER. One without the other is useless. It’s is the skill of a communicator to impart knowledge in that way . You just did it for me. Thank you so much. The outstanding English, woodworking teacher Paul Sellers is surely one of the world’s finest teachers and a gentleman. His numerous videos are remarkable. I think I’ve just discovered the wood turning equivalent. Thank you so much

Andy, thank you so kindly for taking the time to share your thoughts. I'm honored to have been able to communicate these rather mundane, yet important lessons in a way that connects with you. I hope you find peace and happy long shavings in your near future. You have YEW, you must keep turning. I've seen yew turnings and they are lovely. All the best to you and Happy Turning!

I have been turning pens and a couple other small items , I’ve wanted to take a class on turning but it never seams to fall on my schedule. A couple months ago I met a fellow that is one of the instructors at our area wood store and he has been going over some of the basics , I watch him turn a bowl and of course it looks super simple.
You can guess the rest of that story
I knew you had to hold the gouge a certain way but I did not understand what it was 100% until I watched this video I’m super excited to go put this new found knowledge into practice. I’ve really become fond of watching your videos your not in a hurry to get through the process as fast as possible and I’ve noticed you repeat key points

The 1st one I had catches & grain tearout, like my few previous bowls. The second bowl, after watching your videos, went much smoother. I made the bowl look how I wanted it to, rather than just going thinner until I got all of the gouges from catches out.

Had a try out of bowl turning today at wood turning group and was very hard to understand what angle to approach at to ride the bevel. Your explanations and close up footage are so helpful for explaining why I was experiencing issues. Especially your explainations on tool rest height and tip angle. You're such a fantastic teacher.

Thanks for the video. I’m fairly new to this. I took a wood turning class a few years ago. I’m a multi media artist so I’m not always on the lathe. Your videos are great because I can get a quick refresher. Today I was getting a lot of catches so I came back here to figure out what I was doing wrong. Thanks again. Gregg

I have tried using the traditional bowl gouge many times over but just couldn’t catch on. I went out and bought the Wolverine sharpening jig and that didn’t make much of a difference. I got so frustrated I turned to using carbide tip tools and I am able to turn out some very beautiful work that I’m very proud of. I had basically given up on the bowl gouge until I seen this video. The way you explained it ,,, it’s like my brain exploded . Yes with your excellent presentation of the gouge to the wood it was like you turned on the light switch for me. I’m so excited to get back in the garage and try using the bowl gouge again , but have to wait till it warms up here .
I want to thank you for explaining the proper process and getting me excited again to try the traditional tools.

I am still relatively new to turning and am about to start my third bowl. This is also my second time watching the video and it was a helpful review. After a bit of practice with the bowl gouge. I plan to watch some of your other bowl gouge videos as I work my way through the bowl project. Thanks.
