  • 4 Bowl Gouge Techniques - Push Pull Scrape Shear Cuts Video
    The wood turning bowl gouge is an amazing tool. While the bowl gouge can be intimidating at first, with practice it becomes a very versatile tool to turn and shape almost anything you can imagine. Let's learn about the push cut, the pull cut, the scrape, and the shear scrape cuts, how to do these cuts and when you'd want to use them when turning a wood bowl.

    Hi, Kent! Trying to keep this short. Watched your videos a while ago and was happy with what I learned and put it to good use. However, I clearly didn’t absorb it all. I made cool stuff but things didn’t always go well. I watched a few of your videos again today and BINGO! Now I could fully grasp the finer points and went into the garage and turned a really cool saucer and that was the most pleasant and smoothest work I’ve done ever! THANK YOU!!!!

    Hey Kent, Thank you so much for this video. As I mentioned in the comments of another of your videos my girlfriend bought me a set of bowl gouges for xmas. I got them today and it turns they are a set of Hurricane Cryogenic bowls gouges with a 55 degree angle. I am so happy to see those she must really love me especially considering at one point she wanted me to get rid of my lathe LOL. I have saved this video to my bookmarks and will likely re-watch it 4 or 5 more times to get everything clear in my head then tomorrow (sun will be going down soon here today) I will make a bowl for her with a bowl gouge rather than the carbides I have been using. Thanks again. Yall have a wonderful day.

    Always love your videos. But one of the best things I lime about your teaching is how unlike many, you remind people the way you do it is your preferred way and not the only way as so many want to do. There is always more than one way do what suits you best and that is what you always teach. Thank you

      @TurnAWoodBowl  Před 3 lety +1

      I appreciate that! Yes, I discovered, when I was learning, there are many styles of teaching turning. And I realllly didn't like the "this is the way you have to do it" style. LOL Because I'd usually then try to do the opposite and found that it did work many different ways. LOL Woodturning is like raising babies, everyone has an opinion! ;) Thank and Happy Turning!

    Thanks again Kent for the lesson. I’ve learned a lot from your informative videos. I haven’t completely got them hang of the traditional tools yet (ie I rely too much on my carbides), but getting better. Came across a once turned cherry bowl on the shelf that is completely dry (first turned 2012) that I’m finishing with only traditional tools using (trying to at least) the techniques you’ve shown and I’m about got it done and it’s looking good. You’re right about the off the tool finish you can get, so I think I’ll be able to start at 180 no problem.. thanks for all the lessons. Stay safe and well to keep the videos coming. Cheers, Tom

    I’ve enjoyed employing the techniques you have taught me! That shear scrape totally makes sense in regards to other woodworking techniques. That’s why spiral planer and jointer heads produce smoother cuts. That’s also employed using hand planes, chisels and scrapers on like a 45 degree angle- it’s called a “skive” cut...

    Do you have a video that more clearly shows the difference between push and pull? Based on the verbal description, the pull sounds an awful lot like the bush... bevel supported and the nose pointing into the cut. I feel like maybe I just missed the subtle difference in there somewhere!

    • @TurnAWoodBowl
      @TurnAWoodBowl  Před 3 lety +1

      Pull cut is the reverse of the push cut. The nose is trailing the path, instead of leading like it does in the push cut.

    Hey Kent, I am really struggle to understand the difference in a pull and push cut. More specifically I can’t wrap my head around the pull cut, the shot of you doing one still looked like the nose of the gouge was doing the cutting. Do you have any other video showing this technique?

    Good explanation except on the pull cut. The video example you use looks like a scrape and doesn't appear to be bevel supported. Isn't any bevel supported cut a push cut whether we are pulling or pushing the gouge? My slow brain is struggling to wrap itself around the idea of the pull cut. Thanks for the video.

    • @TurnAWoodBowl
      @TurnAWoodBowl  Před rokem

      Michael,
      Yes and yes. The handle angle at about 45° makes the shear-scrape and just shaves the surface. And both techniques only use the lower wing.

    • @feetachemail
      @feetachemail Před 3 lety

      Carbide might work better with very hard, abrasive woods, but on the other hand don't be afraid to sharpen your gouge as often as necessary. A lot of turners keep their sharpening stations right next to the lathe because depending on the wood, we have to resharpen a tool a *lot*. Remember that tool is cutting a LOT of wood. At 1,000 RPM that tool is making a cut around the entire diameter of that piece of wood 16.5 times every second! Someone once told me that with a scraper the edge only lasts about 45 seconds before it should be re-sharpened, and I wouldn't be surprised if that's true with some types of woods.

      Sounds great! A sharp bowl gouge is the trick. Keep it sharp and make light cuts. All the best to you and Happy Turning!

    Great explanation. Could have used a few more minutes of demonstrating each “cut”. Voice over while you are making the approach, on the bevel, pushing, pulling, scraping. That said - very informative. Thanks.

    2:35 (ish) is a push cut.... 5:00 (ish) is a pull cut.... Aren't they exactly the same when you look close? Compare it with your statement at 3:20 (ish) Did I miss the point? (no pun intended).

    Question: What have you done to end up so much on the search results? I try to search for wood turning videos and more than 90% of the results are of your channel. Ive triedvhaving youtube not show your videos, but you still end up as most results. Its really weird.

      Torstein, first off WHY would you try to have YT not show my videos. LOL Have you found what you wanted to see with my videos? That's why you're seeing them. ;) All the best to you and Happy Turning!
