- The first rule of politics, even at times of war: you don't harm the messenger. But if you are a madman like Vlad Dracula himself, there are no rules. Actually, the rules are there, but they are there to be broken! In this tense scene, we finally see Vlad show his true intent against the Ottomans and against Mehmed himself. Things are gonna get awkward after Vlad kills Mehmed's messengers...
Rise of Empires: Ottoman is a Netflix mini-documentary series about Ottoman Empire and it is back with Season 2!
IMDB LINK: www.imdb.com/title/tt9244578/
From IMDB Page:
Few people can call themselves true world conquerors but when it comes to Mehmed II, there's a reason this man was known as Mehmed The Conqueror. Following the conquest of the iconic city of Constantinople, Rise Of Empires combines narration and expert analysis with dramatic reenactments that'll be instantly recognisable to anyone who watched last year's The Last Czars. With a lot more focus on warfare and strategic battle planning, Ottoman is a fascinating and educational series, one that takes a wise approach to showcase more action alongside the narration.
Split across six episodes, the series begins with Mehmet taking the throne from his Father and desperate to prove himself and appease the people following a few rebellions in the empire. In order to do that, he sets his sights on the "Butterfly" city of Constantinople; a Roman-ruled gateway between Asia and Europe. From here, the series progresses through the build up to this battle and the ensuing issues Mehmet II had to deal with, both on the battlefield and with his personal life.
From ingenious acts of navigating spy-filled forests with ships to bombarding city walls with cannon-fire (or 8 metre long "Basilica" as they're referred to in the first episode), there's a solid amount of educational content here worth digesting. Much like Hannibal & The Punic Wars, Ottoman is essentially a lesson in military warfare and it showcases this perfectly across the series.
At the heart of this tale are a series of impassioned narrators that do a great job fleshing out the scenes and adding more background behind what's happening. These are handled in much the same way as the aforementioned Last Czars, with cutaways to face to face interviews. Personally, Celal Cengal is a firm favourite here, with exaggerated mannerisms, an unwavering enthusiasm and some great colloqualistic language that really helps you understand what's happening. That's not to take away from the others here of course, but he'll likely become a firm favourite over the six episodes. There's a good amount of animations, expository text and diagrams that help to paint a portrait too and seeing the screen filled with shades of blood red is both a cruelly ironic symbol of the bloodshed that went into the conquest of this city and also an informative guide as to how the Ottomans actually accomplished this feat. Most of the series revolves around this epic battle, although there is some history behind Mehmed's life too.
It's not perfect and there are a few stand-out moments that spoil the party. The very last scene at the end of the first episode feels ripped straight from Gladiator, with Mehmed II running his hands through corn, while the finale sees Mehmed look directly at the camera and smile before uttering "Now it begins," which seems a bit of a cheesy way to end things, especially after such an epic explanation around how significant this victory actually was. The face to face narration is engaging although the questionable manner the cameraman skips the shots around three or four times to different parts of their face is a bit distracting.
Gripes aside, Rise Of Empires: Ottoman is a fascinating and educational series for a period in history I admittedly have very little knowledge on. Unlike The Last Czars, the dramatic reenactments wisely stick to the battle and action for large periods of the show. This is ultimately to Ottoman's benefit and hopefully this is a trend Netflix can continue going forward, especially given the History Channel appear to have abandoned these sort of documentaries long ago. It's not without its flaws but Ottoman's battle-centric viewpoint and engaging six episodes make it a step-up from The Last Czars and a welcome addition to Netflix's growing documentary library. - Krátké a kreslené filmy

A fair portion of Vlad's punishments had a poetic justice element to them; such as this instance where those who refused to remove their hats had the hats nailed onto their heads so they couldn't be removed.
If I recall correctly, the Ottoman ambassadors didn’t die from the head injuries they sustained from this. At least they didn’t die immediately, anyway.
If I remember correctly this particular “scene” was more played out and planned out, because the ambassadors were apprehended first because Vlad wanted to use very short nails so as not to risk killing them and then have them sent back to the Ottoman Empire like that, with their turbans nailed in place so that the ambassadors themselves could tell their own forces what had happened to them, so as to further spread fear into the Ottoman military that Vlad was getting ready to defend from invasion into Europe.

Fantastic actor who gave an absolutely astoundingly intense portrayal of Vlad. Years ago, I had the chance to speak with someone who lived in Romania but who was visiting my country. I had no idea that Vlad was and still is considered to be a hero by some in Romania. The series did not show every act of violence he committed, although I have read about some of those. I would like to see more dramatic as well as comedic performances by this actor, he was awesome in this series.
Does anyone know what the neckpiece symbol is that he is wearing around his neck…the one in this clip, as well as the one he is wearing in his many YT videos? They appear to be the same symbol. Also, I would like to be able to understand the several interviews he has given, but they appear only to be in his native language. Unfortunately, I only speak English. Any assistance with my inquiries would be appreciated.
He is a hero.
Vlad was not as brutal as some would think, everything he did he did for his birthplace, he was a captive of the ottomans along with his brother(Radu the handsome) and the turks taught them to speak fluent turkish, tactics and combat and torture techniques. Radu chose to remain loyal to the sultan, but Vlad had other plans, some say he might have been raped by the ottomans as a young boy but its not confirmed, in any event Vlad had love for his people and didnt want to be a puppet for the sultan, he would disguise himself as a turk and tell them to open the gates , then Vlads men would enter and kill them all. In my country Vlad is a national hero because he fought for his people, our leaders nowadays would sell us for a bag of coins, not Vlad tho. The pandant on his neck its just some jewelry, doesnt mean anything really. So in conclusion I would say Vlad was brutal but the times created him, he was also very just, you could leave a golden cup in a field and no one would touch it cuz they would know they'll lose the hand. Hope this helped a bit, I didnt saw the tv series about the ottomans but I think Ill give it a try, it looks well made. One more thing, the messengers wore turbans not hats, small detail tho, but he did nailed them to their heads.
I have read and studied him he was one of a kind.
Of course they consider him a hero. He saved them from Ottoman invasion
"No man threatens a messenger! This is madness!"

Many years ago, about 1973 I read a pre-release copy of a book titled, "Dracula: A Biography of Vlad the Impaler." One of the authors was a relative of Vlad. It was a most interesting. It was very well researched and gave a good understanding of how and why Vlad became the person he was. There were many interesting stories about Vlad the Impaler. He is considered a hero in Romania. During his time as the Prince there was literally no crime and everyone had to work. If anyone committed a crime they were immediately impaled. The Ottoman emperor upon coming into Vlad's Princedom stopped and turned around when he saw the bodies of about 20,000 people in different states of decay. The people who lived in his Princedom were actually quite contented feeling protected. But some of the other elite were not happy with him and turned on him.

As a history enthusiast I knew exactly where this was going.
But it makes me wonder at what point the Ottoman Emissaries realized that Vlad doesn't adhere to the principal of "Don't shoot the messager."
Diplomacy applies to civilized cultures. Not to Muslims who have always tried to islamize Europe. They deserved no courtesy, because they were evil.
If my memory is correct, didn't he send the heads of the 3 emissaries back to the Ottomans as a message?
Since there was no such thing as diplomatic immunity, I don't think they were too surprised. I am sure there was some deliberations going on at the sultan's court about exactly who to pick for this mission, knowing that for the messengers it might be a one-way trip.
On one hand, they prolly didn't not think Vlad might harm the sultan's emissaries, on the other the emissaries were in no position to refuse the mission. They might have figured their chances of survival being fifty-fifty.

Historically the 3 messengers survived and were sent back as a lesson.
You don't survive if they use Railroad Spikes
That’s what I read, something akin to roofing nails. They weren’t, uh, happy, but they were sent back alive. Probably more Saxon happy merchant propaganda against Vlad.
I am going to Bucharest this Christmas and one of my stops is seeing his castle. I am so very much looking forward to seeing this and perhaps, only in spirit of course, will see Vlad...
GOD that was a brutal time. Read a book called ‘Enemy at the Gate’ about the 200-year long attempt by the Ottomans to take Vienna…..culminating in their utter defeat (and last attempt) in 1683. But the book took you through the fall of Constantinople to the 200 year conquest of the Balkans and the various sieges and battles during that time. The bravery……AND the cruelty of the knights was something else. They’d skin Ottoman prisoners alive and drape them over the walls to terrify the besieging force……knowing damned well what would happen to THEM if their city or stronghold fell. Just a brutal, brutal time.
Sep 11 1683, the day the civilised world was saved from the horrors of islam.
Yeah, but nothing like miles and miles of your fellow countrymen lining the roads on top of poles stuck up their asses, to make you reconsider your life choices.
@@falconmclenny7284
Not so civilized, I'd argue and definitely less honorable than the adherents to Islam.
The fact that the sieges of Vienna happened speaks more about the arrogance and short sightedness of Austro-Hungarians more than anything else. They were more concerned with short-term political benefits instead of the grander strategical objective (keeping the Ottomans out of Europe).
They could've sent support and resources to Vlad the Impaler for example, but guess who captured and imprisoned him while he was trying to remove Ottoman dominance from Wallachia... that's right, the Austro-Hungarians did it. They got what they deserved, they lost almost every battle they ever had against the Ottomans, unlike Wallachians and Moldavians, who with much smaller armies, achieved great victories against the Ottomans, with remarkable strategical and tactical feats.

The Mongols destroyed the Khazar Empire, one of the most advanced civilizations and most powerful armies of the time, for killing their ambassadors.
This is a very rare occurrence, and whenever it happened, those who killed the ambassadors were destroyed. Vlad was no exception. It may be the domain of psychologists, not historians, to see a psychopath as a national hero.
Human life is valuable.
Sorry, the Kharezmian Empire. Khazars were defeated by the rus duke Igor
@@user-rl6nk9sh7i I'm talking about the destruction in the 13th century, my dear friend. You shouldn't just read history from your own perspective. You can examine the struggle between the Mongols and Celaleddin Harzemşah.
I forgot to add.
The Mamluks also made the mistake of killing the ambassador. They were destroyed by Yavuz Sultan Selim.
Man,relax. I didn't even mention the whole "you kill ma ambassador,i kill ur state" thing. U just confused the Kharezmian Empire and Khazar khaganate. The absolute separate states. My own perspective, yeah right

@@chairmanmeow8481 lol Muslims were about to take the capital. Even if you believe the version in which he was killed by his own people (and we dont know which version is true), the moment that betrayl happened the Ottomans were literally storming Bukarest. And why did his own people betray him? Because he wanted to become a catholic. He sold out his own values, his own priniciples, to an enemy worse then then the Ottomans.
And you know what? After Dracula was gone for good, his brother Radu, who known to be just and wise took the throne. And Radu was a Muslim.

It’s important to remember that Vlad was using the Ottomans’ own brutality against them. They did things like this regularly.
So did everyone everywhere in that era. Grow up
Grow up? What do you mean by that?
This is not true. You are trying to find a justification for your crimes... Everyone knows what the Crusaders did to the Muslims, and how Salahuddin dealt humanely even with his enemies... This scene NAILED IT!
The texts say that the messengers were more insulting and over confident than this depiction even telling Vlad that they would not put their hats down in front of a "ghiaur". Ghiaur is how they called the people from Tara Romaneasca in a very very condescending and insulting demeanor. Guess Vlad would not take anyone's shit :D
The Turks are actually calling ghiaur all Christians as a derogatory term. It is a well known term especially for the Greeks.

Historical facts are not like that. The Ottoman Empire survived for 623 years. The Seljuks survived for 250 years. There is almost 1000 years of dominance. If what you said were true, they would not have been able to rule even for 100 years like the Mongols.
