Probably because the show came onto Netflix refently
I believe that keel hauling was a British naval punishment and originated long after King Alfred had whipped the vikings into submission
rollo is like yeah didn't have that fun since a long time
The Gods spared his life apparently.
tru 😂😂
+Wolfen443 Ahaha nice.
a lot of ropes. some guy nearly dies. a lot of vomiting. Man this looks awfully like a hazing at the Kappa Kappa Kattegat Fraternity's yacht club....

"Hahahahahah *bwlaarg*" - Rollo
Sounds like a "late bar"
The best quote of Rollo. Inspired me to start a new movement. I named it the Bwlaarg movement
"Don't look back, you're not going that way." -Ragnar
"The only way to tell if something is real, is to sail there." -Bjorn Ironside
“I’ve been told your god is a carpenter. And guess what? So am I.” -Floki
"hahahahaha, bwlaargh" -Rollo
In case anyone is wondering this was a combination of two traditions. One is keelhauling, where they throw you under the boat and pull u back up the other side dragging you across the bottom cutting you up, but he was wearing some fancy cloths I guess. The second was the Viking test. For some reason, sometimes voluntary even, Vikings would drown and then be brought back up, if they spit the water out and live the gods deemed them worthy. That's why Bjorn nods his head at the end.
Wow people were dumb back then

I laughed so hard at this comment. :D
Actually the boat was kinda a Ferrari back in its day. Only the really well to do can afford boats and horses.
For Rollo it's about adventure! A taste of former fun
2:31 Floki's expression's like can't we leave him down there just a little longer 😂
I told ragnar we should of killed this piece of shit since season 2

Look at Bjorn. Acting like a grown ass man.
I would beat the shit out of that blonde Pussy
He reminds me of Ragnar when the show first started
he was in a Navy Seal Movie. Lone Survivor (2013). Are we getting new Arnolds and Stallones???
Because he is lmao.
I agree a "man" who does not take care of ALL his family is no grown man (talking about his neglect for his daughter. )
He `s not being drowned. This is Keelhauling. A sailors punishment, thats why he`s smiling after. He knows he`s been punished, but being left alive. This way Bjorn keeps face with his men for punishing Rollo for his betrayal, yet still leaving him alive. Rollo gets this and is content with his punishment. In reality Keelhauling was really much more brutal than what is depicted.
An actual keelhauling they would have started rowing while he was still in the water.
Yes is was, storys of mens bones showing where flesh was torn away from barnacles.
Black sails, captain teach torture scene depicted it pretty good.
kheelhauling is pulling the sailor across the kheel from the opposite side of which he was thrown in and which usually has razor sharp barnacles all along the bottom
The word Keelhaul, or kielhaulen, means “to haul under the keel of a ship.” Literally. They’d basically strap you to the underside & take off full speed. You could imagine how brutal it would get, the goal wasn’t to kill you but to cause as much cosmetic damage as possible.... scar you from head to toe.
The subtle hints of being told "you need a bath".
@@mountainguide7 they still do.
I was hesitant about Floki's new hair and beardstyle when I first saw it but I think now he rocks it like an utter badass.
I think that Bjorn wanted to kill rollo so bad but deep down he still loves his uncle and he just couldn't do it.
No it was simply a Viking test

@@daiv6471 beat me to it!
We dont know for sure if rollo is his biological father or not. Yeah, him and lagertha were fucking around the time bjorn was conceived, but lagertha was fucking ragnar as well, so theres only a 50% chance rollo is his biological father.
Plus, in the later seasons bjorn begins to pick up ragnars small mannerisms, which seems hereditery to me, so i think ragnar is his biological father.
But i guess we'll never know for sure
Elle ros Odin told Bjorn personally on Ragnar death, so there is proof he was Ragnars son.
After what he did to Ragnar and his men... He deserved this!
But again, I like Rollo...
He did deserve it, yupp :o
deserved this? he deserv a lot worse. traitors need to die
Most of the time they did die. This is a traditional form of punishment called "keelhauling" where the victim is drug underneath a boat. They are usually drug from bow to stern, if they were pulled fast it would result in them being cut severely, dismembered or even decapitated by the undergrowth on the ship (the barnacles and other marine undergrowth). If they were drug slowly they would usually drown. So in other words, most of the time they died. If the victim lived they were forgiven. It's safe to say that Bjorn and Floki assumed that Rollo wouldn't survive this.
Rollo is calm as fuck like he's been doing this with his men on the off chance he got the option to make amends
Joe Iracheta Better treatment? Ragnar stood by him when the whole Kattegat wanted to punish him ... but Ragnar saved his brother and all Rollo did was to betray his brother and his people. So, if you ask me he deserved much much worse.
That look on Rollo's face was like "I still got it!!"
Love the way he laughs at the end
Like he's history's first Wim Hof practitioner 😂😂

Rollo was still with Paris he just came along coz he missed the Viking life
why does ragnar look like he's 89 and rollo looks as young as ever? -.- same with lagertha, floki and helga...
Sophie Ludwig meth
The guy who plays Ragnar is a better actor. Way better at acting old and tired.
Because Ragnar has suffered both serious wounds and severe internal injuries since the start of season !.
Admittedly, Rollo has also suffered serious facial wounds, been hacked down and trampled by horse, and copped a few very severe floggings along the way.
Similar applies to Helga, Floki and Lagertha.
Actually, come to think of it, the difference in aging can only be put down the results of the ravages of Ragnar's period of drug addiction, and Rollo, Helga, Floki and Lagertha using much better skin-care products.
Exactly.. Only thing I've been pondering on these lasts season is the age of everyone. xD My bet would be that in season 1 Ragnar and rollo is 19/early twentish. Ragnar and Lagartha could have had Bjorn when he was in his early teens. 14-15. So my bet is that they should be around 45-50 in the current season.
This is true, Ragnar did become an addict in France..maybe not necessarily a crack or meth head but an addict all the same.
1:10 that s the face you make when you know you fucked up

And then there's season 5 where everyone dying of bad writing and anime flashbacks
Love how he smiles in Björns face like it was nothing. Bad ass.
The smile at the end that said, “F*ck! I’ve missed this!”

Keel hauling as we know it in the Anglosphere is something that didn't develop until centuries later. In keel hauling, you'd have a much bigger ship, and the nature of the punishment had more to do with ripping you up as you were dragged across the barnacles.
The Norse boats were small enough to be regularly cleaned.
Like the odd religion of the Drowned God, what they did to Rollo was a re-baptism, a re-birth after drowning that allowed him to become Norse again.
George Knighton the drowned god is off thrones
You cant be Norse without the secret handshake. If you have to ask what it is you aint a viking.
Im rewatching the serie. And started to notice Ragnar could be kinder to his brother. Just consult him every now and then would have helped.
No he wouldn’t have, he wanted to be the man and he was jealous of the man they don’t mix
Rolo was battling inside him all episodes lol he couldn't be saved
Rollo fucked his wife
Cant blame Rollo for his betrayal..he just want to achieves greatness like his brother...ragnar told they will be equal in the beginning but he didnt keep his promise..
Ragnar never sought to become great, he just had a bigger vision than the others and was ahead of his time. Even Rollo scoffed when Ragnar told him that he found a way to go west. If Earl Haraldson hadn't been such a bitch about it, Ragnar would probably not try to take him down. He always seemed to appreciate the simpler family life and adventure. Same with King Horik, Ragnar was always an ally to him, it was the King who decided to kill everyone in his circle. But he failed, and that made Ragnar the King. Even as Earl and King, Ragnar would rather be out and sail and fight with his men at the risk of his life than sit back, indicating he was never really about that life, he just enjoyed not having someone hovering over him. Rollo on the other hand didn't seek to become better or do something no one else did, he just tried to one up his brother with shortcuts. Especially in the beginning of the show, it was abundantly evident that the guy was ruled by his emotions, not by reason. Similar reason Thorunn failed miserably, she was trying to be Lagertha but without the process, she just thought she could skip the decades of training Lagertha went through to be able to survive in battle fields and jump straight to it, which cost her half her face and a lifetime that she could spend with Bjorn and their daughter as royalty.
@NeoGeoSNK ikr!
They are NOT brothers !
That is why the gods abandoned Ragnar. Coz he went against his brother Rollo. He should have been happy for Rollo and the fall of Ragnar could have been ignored. Gods abandoned all of us for our sins and he has gone away.
Thats keelhauling, an ordeal few survived .....
richard kluesek
I thought that's what it was...
but I thought "keel-hauling" included dragging the offender underneath the boat
(along & up against the keel) from the far front of the boat (the bow) to the far rear (the stern)
and thus slicing them up against the razor-sharp barnacles that were stuck along the keel??
+VredesStall no just from one side to the other. Keel hauling is quite a brutal practice in which once hauled under and cut upon the barnacles, any continuation of it generally resulted in drowning, or by being consumed by the sharks attracted to the blood.
The hate for Rollo is misunderstood. The SEER told Rollo before their raid to France , that the gods have something big in store him. That procephy was made by Norse gods and everyone hates him because he followed what the Seer told him.
Rollo is the great-great-great-grandfather of William the Conqueror, or William I of England. Through William, he is one of the ancestors of the present-day British royal family, as well as an ancestor of all current European monarchs.
John Faka People hate Rollo because he betrayed his brother for no reason. He could've remained loyal and still gain a lot of fame.
Rouskey Carpel There is is a big difference between becoming immortalized in history and becoming a legend.
Beyound Soul I know that but family is everything.Ragnar always included Rollo in his plans, recognized rollo's accomplishments and even spared Rollo when everyone wanted the traitorous bum to die for siding with Jarl Borg. The fact that Rollo betrays Ragnar again just to escape his shadow is fugazi(my word for fake/subpar).Also while Rollo was smart,he would've have never came up with the ingenious plan to fake his own death in order to conquer paris.
Rouskey Carpel Still Vikings were violent savages, Rollo did the best thing he could do that is to get away from his brothers shadow.
Ragnar got into his "Valhalla" aka (hell) and Rollo has become a follower of Jesus.
I'd thought Rollo's actions were stupid. He even expected some reprisal from his former mates, but to piss off his wife to boot? That's some insane desire.
She said "probably" when she issued her ultimatum....that was her mistake. Rollo heard "probably" and figured she would still be there when he got back. To a Viking, there is no "probably" You either do something or you don't do it. Probably to Rollo meant she wasn't serious about leaving.
Also, divorce hadn't been invented yet. Certainly not for a Catholic Princess.
i would also like to know what the frank emperor, Rollo's feudal lord, would think about these actions of this man responsible of a great part of his reign.
I would like to see something from Rollo at Vikings:Valhalla. His role was too great for a Viking to have an end with no sense, like his last participation
Probably there'll be his descendant William the bastard, or more known as the conqueror, who will become king of England in 1066
An end with no sense? He lives happily ever after with his family. Then his great great grandson decides to attack England. Along with Harald hadraada.
@@chaelsonnen7947i think he is talkin about coming back to Scandinavia and pathetically plead to Bjorn and Lagertha to come with him. I agree it was trash, they should have left him content with his life
I like the music where they were tying rollo
I have to assume that Clive Standen actually threw up water for this scene/is insane.
The best tv series I’ve ever watched would recommend watching the full series if u haven’t already it’s worth the time
Did he deserve it? Oh yes he did! Good job Bjorn.
abdou salem Without Rollo, we wouldn't have a William the Conqueror. Rollo took control of his own destiny, and now he's famous like other Vikings before and after him. He wasn't the first Vikings who sided with the Christian in those days, the Byzantine Kings used Vikings as Royal Body Guards.
Danny Johnson I'm entirely uncertain of the contribution to civilization of William. Norman dominance was simply only dominance over and not an assimilation of Saxon society. The Magna Carta bears this out, as the Norman governance was unsustainable without enshrining Saxon law and rights as the constitution of that government it's self.
abdou salem it's björn not bjorn
No... Bjørn
***** well done!
Deep down they all still had love for Rollo
Floki's face at the end, come on Aesir give me a break here!
It's like watching an old adrenaline junky get off a rollercoaster after a few years. Just "whohoho, man. I missed this. I haven't had this much fun in years *barf*"

Rollo was my 36th great grandfather. RIP grandpa
BRO SAME!
I’m William the conquerors descendent and his father is rollo
Rollo is my favorite .. He switched sides many times but he always play wars by the rules; he never backstabbed his opponents (ragnar and co) .. He's ambitious and so is ragnar ..
Do you selectively forgot the scene where he sells himself and kills his own army like the terrier traitor he was?
ragnar was loyal just not to his wives 😂

I read a quarter of the Wikipedia page about Duke Rollo of Normandy and then I fantasised the rest. Now I would like to post a long-winded medieval history lecture that everyone will read and trust because I am the most reliable source of information about him.
Behold hundreds of people saying "actually it's keelhauling" like they are the first one to say it
Lol
Lol because they're so desperate to be a know-it-all they don't even take the time to read any comments first 😂
It's keelhauled
Bjorn and Floki viewed this as the gods sparring him. Remember the see'er Invisioning that Rolo would have a great future, I doubt that ment he would become king of france, Rolo will do something to honor the gods and the Vikings once more.
This is how u do it my poor friend Rollo..
-Blackbeard
Such a thin line between love & hate.
It’s a test till see if there’s a Viking still in him so he will fight for his life rather then give in
This makes keelhauling look like a walk in the park compared to the reality
i never thought that Richard the lionheart would be his great20x grandson 😁
Rollo should've said "It's just a prank bro" and the others would forgive him
William the Conqueror descends from Rollo's line...............
All of these scenes in this series were a masterpiece 🤌🏽
Rollo is such a funny character.
Bjorn punished his Uncle Rollo, a man of wealth and fame, the Duke of Normandy, for his betrayal. Which shows that Bjorn holds all people accountable. He also shows mercy and understanding, in that if Bjorn kills Rollo, Bjorn basically guarantees massive amiunt of trouble on the return voyage, Bjorn would have also condemned all of Norway intoo a war that wasnt necessary
Fact I always seen about this, was the fact the gods knew Rollo would be welcomed back to come to their halls had he died then and there. Instead granted him just enough life to suffer betraying as he was never worthy to

This satisfied me he screwed Ragnar over too many times all because he was jealous. Ragnar knew he was jealous but he still loved him Rollos envy made him do all the things he did...
Katheryn. Loving the series. Learned lots. Thanks.
The longer Rollo lives, the more power he gains. If they killed them right there and then, they could have held off the France invasion and wouldnt have lost their 1st battle for Kattegat
shit Bjorn really gets the hell out of me, he looks really terrifying!!!
rollo wasnt drowned he was keel-hauled, far nastier and intended as a punsihnent for mutiny or betrayal.
but rollo was given a long strand so as to be spared for most part from the barbacles shredding him

Rollo was happy that he could meet his bro. Then he was alive...
3:18 that was a disturbing amount of water coming out of his mouth
The olde keelhauling, he's lucky to be alive.
Rollo was so fucking hard to kill
Such a badass show. They have a very rough way to take baths, those vikings.
I love how this is basically what he did to Knut and the same reason as to why, but 100 times worse lmao
He is being keel hauled, not drowned as the title of this video says. In Danish kølhalet and in Norweigian and Swedish something similar. A punishment for being extremely sloopy with one's obligations so they for exampel can endanger the ship, its mission and its crew.
What is dead may never die
Que imagen más poderosa la de la mujer de Rollo, sentada en el trono con los hijos. Jamás lo perdonará.
Rolo is the best warrior in the whole show
Good Warrior yes, but he Lacked a bit of Strategy, and off the battle field the man had some room to grow. He was also rapist in the show, a womanizer, borderline drunkard, and mushroom user.
He needed Ragnar and Ragnar was not worth betrayal. There was a lot with Rollo that irks me in the show.
But not the best leader
Life was so nice back then 😩
These movies gotta stop twisting reality in such a way. Never in a million years does a man who was just about to die by drowning not start to smile after 5 seconds.
Rolo having an inverse baptism basically as a throwback from when he converted to Christianity in the early season
Uncle! Greetings, heard the tales of you and father triumphing over whole Wessex and Northumbria.
Was not aware that the Vikings did keelhauling and the milder version at that.
This is called, "hulling"
it is a form of punishment used by mariners as far back as ships go.
the English used to tether the subject and toss him off the bow and slowly feed line so he would bounce off the of the hull all the way to the stern. sailors would be silent, as to listen to the offender thump, thump, thump. When hoisted from the the stern, if he lived, he was absolved of his crimes.
The real Rollo in history was the great great great grandfather of William the Conquer and was probably never the brother of Ragnar.
what is bread may never pie
It's even more brutal in Black Sails, when the keelhaul Blackbeard😮
what is cut may never grow
Beavis and Butthead's Scandinavian Vacation
that's actually called getting keel hauled
Whats the music/song they play during this? super intense score
Spat a little fishy out at the end there
Drowning Rollo? I don't think Bjorn and his Vikings wont' think twice, three, or even four times with his present status. How is he really going to pull this off with Gisla and the Franks?
i gotta say...i liked hard-core bjorn! He was awesome in show
This was not a drowning. It is a technique known as "Keel Haul," and it was cruel, barbaric and fatal. Popular with pirates and the like. Look it up. If this was done, (as it HAS been many times in history) in real life...It would have raked and striped his back all the way to the bone. Leaving gore and a bloody mess in its wake. This was not a drowning. Neither was it an accurate portrayal of a keep haul, but it was all you could show on TV. Neither was it shown in its entirety on this clip like it was for the show, so you can't really see what I mean.
Rollo must miss the rough lifestyle of being a Viking after living a relatively pampered lifestyle as a duke/count
Now that's being keel hauled
Exactly
