    Rollo has become this cultured, western ruler, and kinda realized that he doesnt fit in with them anymore. It's like when you graduate from college, reunite with your drinking buddies after a couple of years, and realize that youve outgrown them.

    As much as I hate that Rollo betrayed them especially Ragnar, it's good to see that he's left the endless cycle. This dude's just relaxing in his castle with his family while the people he left are all still running around scheming and killing each other, squabbling for power.

    On Another note,
    I want us to realise just how right Floki was. Rollo founded the Duchy of Normandy which a few generations later scioned William the Conqueror, who is an ancestor of the House of Windsor i.e. the current ruling house of the United Kingdom . So yes, in the end Rollo did end up having a legacy that far surpassed that of any of his kinsmen..

      +TheChosen2030 Well she does. While her main bloodline is german, her second bloodline come from House de Normandie (Rollo's house). Hell, pretty much all of the english nobility have Rollo's blood. Most of the french nobility and german nobility did too. His descendant founded what were the two most powerful house in the Middle Age. A legacy that far outstrip Ragnar and his sons.

    • @jchrist5410
      @jchrist5410 Před 7 lety +13

      Nope, the Plantagenets could trace their lineage back to Matilda who was Henry I daughter ( whilst he himself had about 20 children....not all legitimate), who himself was a son of William I. The Plantagenets were a huge bunch of characters whose own bloodline continues to this day. Even recently, a couple of years ago, they used a Plantagenet descendant to identify the remains of Richard III of England through bloodline. It's fascinating stuff how we are basically all interrelated. Hell, if one of my ancestors went on a Crusade, I've probably got some extremely distant cousins over there who are probably about 23542 removed haha.
      However, the De Normandie family legitimately stopped ruling England after a couple of generations. We do, however, sometimes forget that these kings had tens of illegitimate children who then went onto have children who then went onto have children blah blah blah we all get the picture lol.

      @@cristinademartini6653 Why? If men weren't basically feudal slaves that was how they kept respect, power, and wealth. VERY rarely would someone succeed by being "super gentle happy family man". Times were different then. There were few real jobs outside of farming and a man of success had to CARVE that success out of life (often at the expense of others). If a strong man didn't do what he could to constantly "demonstrate" strength it wouldn't be long before the surrounding "vultures" took note of it. I'm also talking about historical realities of the actual time period, not a inaccurate TV series.

    some knowledge for us here, when Floki say that Rolla will reach more fame than the others, it referring to that while Rollo himself may have become a iconic figure in his own rights and though he may not have reach the same height as his Brother, his ultimate legacy is that his descendants will reach far greater heights.
    Rollo would be the Great-Greatt-great-grandfather of William the Conqueror, or William I of England he is one of the ancestors of the Present-day British royal family, as well as an ancestor of all current European monarchs and a great many claimants to abolished European thrones.

Christianity had to include Nordic Days of Festival into their Calendars even so they could make Odin Believers to show up in Church instead of making Offerings to Odin! So when they didn't show up they knew they were not real Christians. In Iceland they still have Sites where Believers make Offerings to Odin/Tor etc...

      In terms of the show - he succeeded where Ragnar failed. He created a lasting legacy. Like the french king Charles, in the end, he overcame the shadow he had been living in. In a weird way, Rollo is very much unlike Ragnar. He dies as an old man after living a happy life with a loving wife, his children rule as conquerors, his legacy endures and his new alliance holds and he manages to truly change himself. Compare that to Ragnar who died in a pit in a dark forest, whose children spent years killing each other in order to claim his bloody throne and who could never truly become the man Rollo turned out to be despite always wishing to do so. To me, it is almost poetic.

      The same guys who wanted to stay in frankia not to settle, as they had this chance when emperor charles made his offer to rollo and what the historically men who become the normans did, but to RAID paris one second time. They wanted to stick by ragnar's side? Fair enough, but they should have tried to go back to norway and inform their king of his brother's betrayal (which ragnar already knew would happen ever since he got the "bear crowned by the princess" profecy by the seer before going to frankia)as king horik did when he fled from England or just like the only survivor of the wessex settlement did, because don't tell me they wouldn't be able to build some kind of ship or, if they weren't able to, at least they should have known that something was coming at them because, sure rollo had lead them, but the franks, weak all as you want, are not stupid to let pillagers and invaders free in their country, if they refuse to follow rollo, especially after it was ragnar who did break the treat with them. So, it is as awful as it seems because they paid their loyalty to Ragnar with their lives, but they had it coming for their lack of vision and rollo had really no other choice.

    I've always liked the underlying theme of Vikings, that the Viking world they know is changing.
    The Norse never had rich fertile lands, that's why they raided and weren't often conquered by foreigners. But their faith and way of life just changed and gradually disappeared.
    Even Vikings settlers like the Normans or the Rus forgot their origins over time, it's quite sad really. At least it's been remembered and loved to this day however.

    If this is the last scene with Rollo in the series, it was fitting but kind of bittersweet. He grew into his own pretty late, but definitely had a lot of flaws along the way and was definitely not the most likeable character by far. Even so, it wouldn't be too bad to recognize his own success in future episodes, just to solidify the Norse influence and the early formation of Normandy that he had a part in. It's all half-history anyway in the end, though.
