All they need to do is add back in party members like in 64 and TTYD. That's it. Why they still refuse to do this and continue to add in tedious battle mechanics that only drag down the action boggles my mind.

Gavintendo Well Color Splash kinda fix two of the problems. The dialogue and locations. The dialogue is actually pretty good and it doesn't really rely on paper puns a lot. And the locations were also improved. Most of it wasn't just the generic grass, desert, ice, foest etc. However, the other problems you mentioned....... yeah they need to be fixed

Paper Mario 64 is my favorite Mario game, and second favorite game of all time. it really bothers me no one talks about it, yes. Imo, every single 64 chapter is good, while only half of TTYD’s are good. TTYD also has too much backtracking which is super annoying, while 64 almost always has really good and well thought out overworld design which is fun to go through.

For over a year we've been running in circles and it's starting to drive me insane!. I *greatly* understand that COlor SPlash isn't what Paper Mario is about, it isn't what the series used to be, I understand it went into a direction that most didn't like, I understand people aren't too crazy about the papercraft look and the characters being aware they are made of paper, I get people don't like that they took away the original characters and replaced them with identical Toads and traditional Mario enemies, I get that nobody likes the battle system and there's no real reason to fight. I. GET. ALL. OF. ThaT!.
...At this point I'm just "OH! What else is new!!?? Are You going to add anything new to the conversation? or are you going to waste my time saying what everyone else has said!?". THis is almost what the gaming MEdia does to Sonic. THey glorify the genesis/Megadrive games and SOnic Mainia. but it all goes downhill once they start talking about the 3D games. such as "The Adventure games haven't aged well and they now suck", "SOnic has too many characters", "SOnic has crappy voice acting", "Sonic has overly complicated plots" and "Sonic 06 and SOnic Boom Rise of Lyric are the worst games ever and they are somehow the reason why SOnic Forces will probably suck".

Ya know what I noticed? Once Fire Emblem got mainstream, the Paper Mario series got shafted. Both series are made by Intelligent Systems. So now that they're so focused on Fire Emblem, they gave the Paper Mario to their B-Team.

I think I like Fire Emblem better than paper mario, even though I like paper mario Fire Emblem is actually really good. It's my kind of style, tactical RPG, usually good story (well Fire Emblem Three Houses but fates does not), good characters (unless it's fates) and fun. I'm no weeb, I don't watch anime, but I love the fire emblem series.

I have absolutely no issue with that they tried with Super, as I enjoyed fighting with Luigi more than anyone else.

The most important aspect of the Paper Mario formula that they still refuse to bring back, for me, was partners. Sure, mechanically they were just extra abilities hidden behind a menu, but story-wise, you never felt alone, you felt like you had an impact in more people's lives than just Peach's, Bowser's and a plethora of toads's. However, she wasn't dead, she was close to death until Merlon, who found her, gave her the butterfly like for she has in order to save her since she was clinging to life by a thread but at the cost of her memories. In the end Count Bleck wanted to make up for what he did sacrificed himself to save all worlds while Tippi, is one true love, as well, gave herself up. There is a lot that happened in between (With Dimentio, Count Bleck/Blumiere's Tribe of Darkness, and why Timpani was almost killed and by whom, etc)

To be fair, Super wouldn't have worked in the turned based format. The enemy's designs aren't made to look powerful. They're made to look fast, like a monster that chases you up the stairs from the basement. Mimi wouldn't have been as terrifying if she was a still boss. The quicker platforming battles give a sense of edge, as if it can't be calculated.
At it's core, Super has the same personality and heart as the first two.
Imagine the Brobot battle not flying trough space at light speed. It's impossible. The only boss that would be better in turn based combat is Bonechill.
Then they should have just made the game a fucking RPG in the first place.

I also highly suggest people play both Paper Mario 64 and Paper Mario:TTYD. I know I need to play the first one, because I heard it's the same level of quality as TTYD. It might not be perfect, but on it's own merits as the first PM game it is awesome.
Nintendo should just make a Paper Luigi game based off the adventures of Luigi in Thousand Year Door. I mean half the work is done already with Luigi's partners, his story. Just make that and people will spend 60 bucks on a game that has greatness.
Even better remake thousand year door and have a luigi add-on like what they did for mario and luigi super star saga.

Thousand Year Door is a masterpiece and EASILY my favorite game of all time. I hope and pray that someday they will go back to the TTYD/64 formula; the badge system, action command combat, and of course the partners. I swear the people currently in charge of this series are incompetent. Awesome vid alax!

I'd love it if they could get the gameplay from the first two games, yet a story and characters in it like Super Paper Mario. Do you like Super Paper Mario?
I personally love Super Paper Mario just as much as I love Paper Mario 64 & TTYD. A lot of people complain the game for being a 2D Platformer unlike the first two. However, unlike other 2D Mario games, it still had that Paper Mario feel to it because of its story, its characters and its enviroment. Its possibly the darkest story in the entire Mario series, and deep down, it tells of a love story between *Spoilers.*
And another thing too, unlike Sticker Star and Color Splash, Super Paper Mario is still a lot of fun!

I liked super paper mario at some point. But I now see that the game often goes out of its way to waste your time and sometimes hates you while it's wasting your time. Example, making you play the player play through flop side's 100 trials and the please guy. Those aren't the only places where it wasted your time but those two are also a middle finger to the player. There's even more wrong with this game tho, not going into detail again unless you ask. The story's good though.

To be honest, I find SPM kinda overrated. It only has the story going for it. Also, TTYD is darker.
I think it has the gameplay going for it as well. Yeah it's not turn based but it's still good. There are a couple of stupid padding moments in a few chapters but the gameplay style works really well, is legitimately fun to play, and sets it apart from the other two while giving them time to come up with ideas on how to add to the original formula by having a reprieve with (what was intended to be) a one time switch up.
It's the same reason why Zelda II and Mario 2 are so fun because they are still genuinely good and still feel like they belong and were great for a one time switch up to avoid stagnation.
All we need is
PM64 characters
TTYD battle system
SPM story and villains
SS music and NPC dialogue
CS humour, character (not just NPCs) dialogue and graphics
And we have a great game.
EDIT: Yes, I did include Sticker Star and Colour Splash. *Intentionally.*
Scrap the last two. CS's humor and graphics sucked and didn't fit the series respectively.

Quite literally nothing that Sticker Star or Color Splash introduced should be carried over to any other games. None of them are as good as in the true Paper Mario games.

I love that TTYD was your first rental game. The original Paper Mario was my first rental game (as far as I can remember), way back in 2001. Granted, it was from Hollywood Video, but they had Legos, man. LEGOS.

Just wanted to point out that the box art for Color Splash you show in this video is actually a fanmade modification by DMZapp that adds more characters like in older paper Mario games, so it might confuse some people :P
I agree with everything you said, though maybe you could've talked a bit more about Paper Mario 64 and Super Paper Mario as well, since I think the first 3 games as a whole are what embody the Paper Mario identity that was lost with Sticker Star (even if SPM plays different, it still has the story structure and characters that made TTYD and PM so great)
I'm pleasantly surprised by the new trailer. This one takes a bigger step to that formula we love, but still has a few things that need to be over come. Judging by what we seen, so far it appears to have a fresh new story, characters with personality, partners, a connected world, and a battle system that is familiar, but it has a twist. What holds it back though, is that for the most part, the character designs aren't really to unique, and for the most part, the world is rather familiar and something we have seen, sort of. It looks more like they are easing us into a formula we are familiar with, before they go all out making new assets for characters and stuff. This game is playing it safe, they want to see how we like it, before they go all out.
Though you didn't get into JPRGs, instead of choosing footage from Final Fantasy 7 that was instantly recognizable, that was pretty cool you chose something more obscure, a battle with Suicide House in Sector 6 in Midgar.
And I'm so happy about this video because you actually mention how the Koopas, etc. are given personalities, are differentiated, and Mario has to interact with the friendly ones without stomping or hitting them with his hammer.
It's the logical evolution of Super Mario RPG, where in one area there are friendly 'monsters', but in TTYD they're not called monsters and they're just the people of the village or town. It also elevates Mario as a hero, he has to help people by fetching them this or that or going on a sidequest, listen to people's stories, and the player feels good when Mario helps the townspeople with their plight. That's a shame that in the later Paper Mario games Mario doesn't have partners.
I love the cheekiness and wit of the game. Yay for great dialogue writing!!!
For some reason I didn't notice that you didn't have to grind in TTYD unlike in Super Mario RPG. It does merge platforming with RPG, bringing in the best elements of both, that there's a linear story progression so you aren't visiting every single town on the world map to figure out where you're supposed to go next but you can revisit areas so you can see how they changed after and many areas aren't accessible until later. I like that you can talk to Luigi each time you return to Rogueport.

I'm still waiting for the perfect merge of Super paper mario and paper mario the thousand year old door. That would such an amazing game. Gameplay of TTYD, characters of TTYD, story like SPM and music like either of the games. Instant day 1 purchase. Could end up one of my favorite RPG's too.
Juckle If they could make a game that had the gameplay of TTYD, and the story of Super Paper Mario, that would quickly become everyone's number 1.

Is just funny to me that rewatching this I see that youtube has it as Paper Mario Sticker Star as the game you're talking about
Something to point out is that there is a video called "Why Paper Mario Changed" by a user named "SuperMarioT" that you and other Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door fans need to see. It addresses many of the problems that Paper Mario has had and explains them using different kinds of interviews as sources, even bringing up 3D Mario's change in terms of story during Super Mario Galaxy 2 to further explain Miyamoto's minimal involvement in it, as well as to explain the involvement of Paper Mario's original co-director and how he's an even bigger culprit to the change with the original director having been absent from the series since Paper Mario: Sticker Star. With that information intact, it also provides a possible solution on how to get Paper Mario's original director back and to possibly fix the series back to how it should be.
Also, just gonna point out that I feel Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and Super Paper Mario arguably have just as unique character designs as Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
Yes, as Super mario T said, Ryota Kawade the director of the 1st the paper mario games, needs to come back. It is not just Miyamoto that is the problem. I was on super mario wiki, and found that Kawade was only credited as "special thanks" on Sticker Star. This same article detailed how he work on the games until after Super Paper Mario. I read that before SuperMarioT's Video, and I suspected his absence probably was why paper mario changed for the worse. But SuperMarioT pieced it all together and explained with new information I hadn't seen, and showed us that his absence is exactly what killed Paper Mario.

On a plus side, at least the Mainline Mario games are starting to get better again thanks to Mario Odyssey finally being a Mario game that's actually trying to be creative & original since the first Galaxy game, & isn't a sequel of a past game like Galaxy 2 & 3D World was, nor is it solely relying on banking on nostalgia like 3D Land did & especially the NSMB games. If the Main games are going back to that sense of creativity, taking risks & originality that the mainline games has been missing in over a decade, maybe, just maybe the Paper Mario games will get the same treatment as well.

They moving away from games for casual players and return to core audiences, as seen by Odyssey, Breath of the Wild and the Revival of Metroid. So we can at least be a tiny bit hopeful for Paper Mario (and Mario Party...).
I have doubts about Star Fox. that series is bieng held back by the 64 fanbase. I hate the fact that Star Fox 64. one of the best N64 games is now the possible death of the series with 64 3D and Zero not even selling a million copies. Zero is now the worst selling game in the series

On top of removing partners and those annoying stickers _mandatory_ for battle, the only thing I didn't like about these new Paper Mario games was how they treated the world like literal paper.
Ex: Certain status effects in PM64 and TTYD included:
Burns, dizziness, poison, frozen, asleep...ness, etc.
Status effects in SS and Color Splash included:
- Being crumpled. Like paper.
- Being soaked. Like paper.
- Being clipped by a giant paper clip. Like paper.
Yes! the thing I hate the most about the new games is how they made the world feel fake. The paper thing used to be a cool art style, now the entire world is a paper setup with cardboard boxes and stock photos.
The most "papery" the old games went was with the TTYD transformation curses.

And Thousand Year Door took the effort to explain that it was Mario being cursed with the ability to change his body into a paper like form. He wasn't actually paper and wasn't naturally able to do this. The characters all explained how weird and unnatural it was for Mario to voluntarily change their bodies into a paper like state.
Yes. The later games in the series focused way too much on the PAPER aspect, when that was never actually the main appeal of the good Paper Mario games. It's like Arlo said, "We don't love Paper Mario because it's PAPER Mario. We love it because it's Mario STORY!"
64 and TTYD are Mario Story, SS and CS are Paper Mario, and SPM is both.

Because It's the least good of the great paper mario games.
Link the Pringles Man It's a mix bag essentially. It does have that flair like the previous titles but doesn't have the impact. A platformer with RPG elements could go so far. Sure it let's you think on your feet but it isn't much to think. Just use what you found in set zone or new character against the boss then that's it. The 3D shift is unique but at the same time youre basicly look at a long empty hallway.
