  • Here are five reasons you don't want to have your parrot on your shoulder.
Even though my parrots are very well trained and I could have them on my shoulder, I still choose NOT TO for the 5 reasons explained in this video.
If you want to avoid having major problems with your bird, biting, and danger, don't allow your parrot onto your shoulder.

I had a cockatiel and whenever he'd find me somewhere, he would crawl up my body and settle on my shoulder and immediately start snacking on my earlobes. It didn't hurt but still 😂😂😂 And I would just put a towel on my shoulders to catch poop but I can see why that's not always an option.

That's why if my birds are on my shoulder they only got access to the back of my head.

Would love to see a video expanding on #3 on the Parrot Wizard take on poop mess management with parrot ownership. In other words, realistic and practical steps one can take to keep poop mess managed and to a minimum outside of the cage, including as it pertains to larger and smaller species' cases.

My severe macaw that I raised from a baby understood that I didn’t like it when she pooped on me so she somehow managed to poop and not hit pmy clothes. Idk how she managed it. Because I raised her she was also trained with the step up command from the very beginning. So even if she didn’t want to leave my shoulder if I asked her to step up 99.9% of the time she wouldn’t give me any trouble but she was a mini and her head wasn’t higher than mine when she was on my shoulder. I had a CH conure who also rode on me and I’d have to take him to perches to go potty. They both were the best potty trained birds I have had. I was however given advice when I got my large macaw, (like Rachel only she’s been with me 33 years since I rescued her at 10 months old) never put a large macaw on your shoulder BC if they’re head is higher than yours they might want to assert dominance toward you. In many birds the pecking order often shows the dominant to be higher than all the other birds when roosting for example. My big bird has tested me on a regular basis just to see if I’m still the boss. 🤷🏼‍♀️
As the head of the flock she expects my head to be higher than hers. I don’t perch her over my head anywhere in the aviary or the main part of the house. Her many tree stands are made so when I’m standing I’m over her head. If a large macaw reacted or was feeling hormonal (spring is starting already at my house) could do some damage in a nanosecond. 😬
That said I don’t fear my bird I prefer to think about it as respecting that she a wild animal and as such she can be very unpredictable. If you show them your afraid it can get much worse IMO. Just my experience in 30 plus years. Love Kili she’s so cute, reminds me a little of my dearly departed CH conure. He was with me 34 years. 💔

    I’m okay lol
I don’t wear jewelry or glasses. There’s special things to buy on ur back for poop. And I will have my parrots tap me when they go poop. I will carry treats to get them off. And I’m going to be wearing headphones. So yeah and no my parrots won’t bite me on my face because I will train them not to.

Sounds like a lot of trouble compared to just having the parrot on your hand or on a stand. And there’s always risk of a bite even with a perfectly trained parrot. Sometimes they bite to warn you of something they perceive as dangerous.

And that's not even the worst part, poop on your shirt is annoying for 5 minutes and a scar on your face ultimately is just that, but if you're deaf at 30 then you'll have quite a few decades to live with that 😅
