  • Cissero is a Blue and Yellow Macaw, also known as a Blue and Gold Macaw. These Macaws are found natively in the more northern region of South America though there is a population found in Florida, which is attributed to escaped or intentionally released pets.

I found out by trial and error that blowing sometimes works. But definitely escalating it by making a big deal or yelling, doesn't help. Blowing is a very gentle way of signaling. But otherwise, ignoring the behaviour or redirecting them to something they can bite or chew is the best idea.

Well eventually they will give up, that is why people keep training them that way I guess?
      Not my proudest moment but...
I had to launch one (not my bird, I was visiting) across the room a week or so ago: he had learned that biting *hard* and draw lots of blood gave him space and was developing the habit of biting peoples faces.
I was explaining to him what actions are nice and which ones are not nice. (Just vocalising, giving him space when he was behaving himself etc.)
So when he launched himself towards my face, he definitely got called out on that. I did not hit him, but he did run into my hand all by himself and when he tried again I launched him.
(He flew around the room, landed on the floor, rethought his actions, stepped up and behaved himself. This was a fully flighted and very capable of flying bird, NEVER do this with one you clipped!!)
He sat nicely, accepted a nut and was okay, no more rushing and biting, he got the message.
"Do not bite (me) and everything is okay."
He just needed a "no, stop that" and was okay with that.
No, that is not how I handle my parrots, but this one really was out of control and putting people in the hospital.
He is now back to clickertraining btw., his family realised he really just needed at lot of positive attention/reinforcement and to put his energy to better use.
I hope they (birb and human) all will develop more self-confidence and they will get this one back to being the wonderful bird he can be.

Oddly enough I discovered this blowing in the face when getting bitten and they won’t let go…. I have an adolescent middle school/pubescent/teenager 4-5 month old male kitten who’s kinda in the same hormone stages the mcaw is.
He gets crazy, moody, bitey, spicy, bursting with energy, and sometimes he’ll get so worked up or he doesn’t have a good attitude about having his nails clipped & he’ll clamp down on you with his kitten needle teeth and won’t let go! 😅 it seriously hurts! The most effective thing I’ve tried is blowing hard into his ears and it turns off the bite switch! He looks kinda puzzled as to why I did that and “ what’s the problem? “ 😂
I love him dearly and he’s a good boy when he’s run and played out his kitten energy! ❤

I really hope you're not the one(s) who clipped this beautiful bird's wings. If you don't want an animal that flies, don't get a bird. Bird harnesses exist, free flying exists, and solely indoor living exists. STOP CLIPPING WINGS. Clipping a bird's wings severely limits their escape chances and options, whilst simultaneously limiting the bird's movement and functionality overall/in general. THEE ONLY reason to clip a bird's wings is if the bird is blind and hurting itself by flying into things.
Petting parrots on their backs and bellies sexually stimulates and excites them. You're telling them you want to mate and make babies when you pet those areas. Stop. This is part of the reason your precious dinosaur is biting you.

You're right, touching certain areas such as the belly or under the wings can be uncomfortable for birds and may provoke a defensive response, such as biting. It's crucial for handlers to understand and respect a bird's body language and comfort zones to ensure interactions are safe and stress-free for both the bird and the handler.

Hit a bird? Oh my gosh, NO! They are not for hitting! Just don't put your thumb in his mouth. 😂❤ I only have small birds. Cockatiel & conure are my biggest. So I have no experience with birds that can really hurt. Bad people make bad birds. No such thing. Just misunderstood and heaps of people get a bird. Want it to act like a cat or dog. Cut their wings so they can't get away. Have no understanding of bird body language. Get them all heightened. They can't get away, they aren't being listened too. They only get seed diet. And then the only way they have left to say no is to bite. And then suddenly it's a "bad bird" 👎 Don't hit birds. Practice recall. And like you said, catch them behaving and reward, and try to not reinforce the icky. 🎉 ❤
