3 Things You Must Know Before Getting A

  • There is a reason why #Macaw #Parrots are so iconic- they are incredible, beautiful and watching them fly helps me make sense of the world!
However, before you get a Macaw Parrot, it is best to know and understand what you are getting yourself into!
    1 Their Bodies
These are parrots that are large, and this should be carefully considered. In some ways, a Macaw parrot will take a toll on you because their feet are strong, their nails are long and their beaks are powerful. I’m confident that a Macaw parrot that is angry could do a lot of damage, but even when they are not and they are just playing, bonding and connecting with you, they leave their marks!
Their size also means that their sound is significant and their need to fly and chew wood can’t be denied. These birds need space to fly, to squawk and have fun!
    2 Their Attitude
These birds have an attitude! They are intimidating and they know it, which means that people who have had parrots and know how to take care of them do best. Otherwise, one bite can be enough to keep some people from continuing to spend time with a Macaw - a sad fate for both people and the Macaw.
    3 Their Diet
Macaw parrots have special dietary needs. In addition to needing fresh vegetables every day and parrot pellets, they also must have nut fat to be healthy. The thing about Macaws is that they are, in this way, expensive to keep. Because they are large, they require the largest cages or aviaries; additionally, buying Macaw mix or nuts can get expensive. I find it is more expensive than feeding a large dog!

Next to impossible- I agree and I do think it’s harder with Macaws, but it’s just it’s hard with any species. They never understand why you, as part of the flock, is gone. How is your hyacinth?
That is a species my husband wants but I’m a little intimidated and my flock is complete! Especially for such large parrots!

I just read you also have to be extremely careful with Teflon coated non-stick pans, Bread machines, irons, some curling irons and hair appliances, space heaters, pancake grills, etc., I never knew this before reading your comment and googling it! (Despite owning and raising a couple cockatiels, when I was younger, who thankfully never were injured by such things)
But I shouldn't too surprised since that's basically the reason why miners took canaries with them into the mines because they were so sensitive and when the miners saw the birds were getting sick or worse, it was time to get the heck out of the mines.
It's just one of the many reasons, while despite having a deep admiration of these birds, I think it's best for me to just admire them from afar rather trying to raise one myself. I just couldn't imagine hurting (or worse) such a big, beautiful and extremely intelligent bird because of my carelessness or naivety.

Not a good reason to get one…. I had 5 and then I got sick! They live for up to 60 or so years! Vet bills are very very expensive! Food is super expensive organic fruits and veggies. They need their own room and a screened in porch to let them fly. They need to be out all day and just get put away when you are asleep or grocery shopping. You need to be home all day. Listen to this women…. She is so right! This is and should never be an impulse buy and you need to hear them scream in a small empty room for an hour before you know if you can handle the noise. And a bag of bird food is only half the cost cause it’s only half of what they eat. You need to meal prep and shop for them to eat correctly and the toys are 50 to 60 dollars a toy that might last a week. And these are the must haves! They also have the ability to reason and figure things out! They can also break out of their cage and chew through the Sheetrock and 2 by 4s to the outside of your house in about an hour if they really want to! That is no joke… very expensive!!!! A 18 month old toddler with the ability to dismantle a house with their beaks for 60 plus years!

Yesterday I went to a popular tourist location near my home with a bunch of locally owned businesses. One of them was a petting zoo and outside of it were two macaws and a third bird I couldn't identify. The macaws were together in a cage meant for parakeets and were clearly stressed and upset to the point they were plucking out their feathers. It didn't help that there were little kids going up to the cage and hitting it. It takes a quick and easy search to learn that you don't do that stuff with macaws yet there they were

This way I actully think 2 macaws need you to have more money then having a horse. Because my horse have good space to roam around with other horses at the stable while I live in a small rented place. I don't need to actully have enough for a big loan. Just enough for the horse to get everything he needs. Dogs to can be active outside and have a small space inside just fine, my dogs mostly just eat and sleeps and cuddles inside.

"one alone is torture" finally. I see SO MANY videos where they say its fine to have birds alone & i think that is plain wrong. Birds are social, intelligent creatures, who needs a lot of care and company (bird company) to thrive. Here in germany we have laws against holding birds alone - even if im not sure if all are covered, but macaws are for sure.
    Just my 2 cents

    • @ParrotBliss
      @ParrotBliss  Před 7 měsíci +2

It breaks my heart when people have a parent alone. At least, if they are two of the species, it’s better than nothing. I have heard of your law, I think it is a good one. Two of a species makes all the difference, it makes apparent much happier. I have very few behavior issues, and very little Plucking. As a matter fact, Most of my parents, the pluck or adopted that way and they haven’t gotten worse. I attribute they’re not hormonal, not anxiety, filled and not plucking personalities to the fact that they usually have another other species and if not, there is a whole flock of birds here. I do believe it is a part of well-being. Thank you for posting!

She was 45 yrs old. I miss her dearly. I am getting another blue & gold Macaw next weekend. She is 13 yrs old. It's going to be very very different! I also have a yellow napped Amazon that use to play with another macaw.

A macaw is not the kind of pet you can care for, for a few hours a day and then go out until 11:pm nearly every night: the bird has to be your only life outside of your obligation to provide money for a place to live and even that may be too much for the bird unless you have the intelligence and long term commitment to give to the bid
