Yuri on Ice Movie Cancelled by MAPPA Cause It Isn't Profitable

- It wouldn't be far fetched to say without Yuri on Ice, Studio MAPPA might not be the same company it is today. Take that as a good or bad thing, but Yuri on Ice came out and made waves in a community that wasn't as popular as it is today thanks to Demon Slayer's influence & Jujutsu Kaisen. So why did they cancel it?

This seems like quite a middle finger to any Yuri On Ice fans. I could understand if they postponed it for later. But straight up canceling is crazy
The anime sold alot but because MAPPA was at the bottom of production committee they got the least amount hence it made alot of profit just not for mappa

It’s a business bro
I'm irritated that they didn't just pass on the project and let some other studio get a crack at it.
YOI was an original anime Mappa did. I’m not sure if originals are titles that can/would be passed on.
Edit: Apparently, since Mappa was low on the production committee (last), maybe it’s still possible for the other production committee companies to pass it on to another studio if Mappa no longer wishes to work on YOI. Don’t have too much hope fans, but, still, if an original can be passed on, perhaps, Avex company will give the project to someone else.

Mappa made a huge mistake, yuri on ice is what put them on the mainstream map in the first place, going as far as to win anime of the year and the fact that the fan base has remained so active after almost a decade just shows how dedicated they are, they’re throwing money in the trash by not giving content to such dedicated fans.

@@AresStrieter see back in the early 2000's the bobobo anime was pretty popular thanks to it's.... Bizarre source material that would make JJBA look normal by comparison..
Unfortunately the anime was "Too much" and moms in Japan got together and petition for the anime to be cancelled. The the anime was in the middle of it's climax and there was only a few more story arcs remaining.... Unfortunately Toei bent the knee and pulled the plug on the anime and to this day it never got finished or remade.
Bobobo was deemed "Too much" meanwhile Japan is.... Well Japan so the hypocrisy and irony is off the charts
@@reinsama2.09 That actually sucks. IDK how the moms succeed as it's their fault for not keeping a close eye on their children. As you said, the Bobobo-Bo anime was almost finished (I think there were two or three arcs left unadapted). If the anime returns, I want a continuation rather than a reboot as it's already perfect. Although it may sound impossible because of the ending in the anime, I have a solution.
Have the first episode of the revival be a 4th-wall filler episode where the characters are actors and have moved on, but Bobobo-Bo and/or Don Patch have to pay a huge debt, so the only solution is to revive the show and bring back everyone. After that episode, the entirety of the revival is an adaptation of the final arcs of the Bobobo manga.

Who cares
I figured. I don’t think it’s unprofitable. Plenty of series like it exist and while it may be more female dominant, it’s still something people are willing to pay for and support. It is popular, just not in the demographic they wish to sell to now that they’ve made it big. YOI was an insanely popular series in 2016. With lots of fans including people in the Olympics and ice skaters. It was one of the biggest franchises from 2016. I think if it came out on time, it would be profitable.
Though, I think what really happened was, Mappa did YOI when they were new and an upcoming studio, now, they are too big and no longer care about the YOI fans or even the other series they did early on like Bahamut. Or perhaps the people who wanted to work on YOI are no longer with Mappa. There have been a few people leave to my knowledge and Maruyama, the one who created the studio left for another smaller company of his own, again. (M2 Studio & N Lite Japan) I get it. Mappa moved on. I figured they did. Still, I’m disappointed in the news. I am glad to finally know. I’m no longer waiting for it this way.
I’m still disappointed in Mappa. Throwing away their fans like that. I was looking forward to seeing how YOI hype would compare to 2016.
Edit: Yes, Sayo Yamamoto was one of the people to leave Mappa. She directed YOI anime.
The anime sold alot but because MAPPA was at the bottom of production committee they got the least amount hence it made alot of profit just not for mappa
Sayo Yamamoto didn't leave MAPPA because she never worked there to begin with.

Doesn’t make money
I guess the cost of production got to a point that completing it would cost so much more than they could recover, with even their most optimistic revenue estimates, that it made more sense to cut their losses now and scrap it.
The only anime I remember getting cancelled before it was one called Tokyo Babylon, a Clamps work. Apparently, there were some problems concerning the designs.

Show MAPPA, what they missed on.
It’s not surprising when they’re the biggest name in the anime industry, and basically the top dog of recent years as madhouse was in the 2000s-2010s, they’re working on JJK, CSM, which are 2 of the biggest next gen shonen. I’m just so glad they didn’t cancel Dorohedoro S2.
Maybe they’ll give it to another studio who makes more sports or slice of life related anime but if it’s anime original then idk if that’d happen.
Yeah it could be the lack of production and trailer thanks to mappa. What were they thinking?
I bought BluRay and even some merch mugs etc. but I understand what happened.
"Boys Love" manga/anime have relatively smaller audience compared to regular series.
Japanese have problem.
Thai BL industry took over the genere with their live action BL shows (GMMTV).
Not only they get multiple sponsorships but also get most of the money, not from TV shows themselves but from merchendise, concert ticket sales and fan meetings with talented real stars.
GMMTV have dozens of acting couples and make several good shows in a year. It's a money printing machine.
Some of my favourite shows that they air (for free!) on CZcams:
1000stars, Not Me, Bad Buddy series, My School President, Vice Versa, Moonlight Chicken, Only Friends, Last Twilight, Cooking Crush and currently airing "Only Boo" and "We Are".
That not the issue. Many BL are profitable.
The issue is the production committee. Mappa was at the lowest position of the production and made pretty much nothing.
pretty 90% of the sales and profit went to the committee. Mappa wanted to negociate a higher profit, but the committee didn't.
Most anime studio don't have enough money or power to make decisions in the production committee, which is why anime like Attack on titan was not produced by wit studio, the production committee didn't wanted to let them have more times to animate it so wit studio decided to leave.
Usually if you check the production committee of an anime, and see the anime studio at the bottom position, they make less than 10% profit, if the studio don't even appear, they make no profit at all from it, they are just art commissioned, and the only for them to make profit is if people buy directly from their website few inhouse merch (something that most west anime fan don't know or understand)
Now I'm extremely worried about the Zombieland Saga they also announced years ago
Zombieland Saga 2 already came out to my understanding. It was a 2021 series. As for the movie, idk. Was that announced years ago? I would’ve figured the announcement would be more recent. Like the last 2 or 3 years. Sometime after s2 release. I think Zombieland has a chance at releasing. They released s2, after all.
Edit: Yeah, the movie was announced in 2021. It’s still on MAL, I think, Zombieland is okay for the moment. YOI had disappeared off MAL, even before this video, or the news from other sources, I had seen the disappearance as a bad sign, but had no proof until this news.

Yuri on Ice was really good. But it should not have taken 7 years to make a movie in the first place, clearly something was going on behind the scenes. It's really sad how they just throw it away like that, can't imagine how all the people who were working on it feel.
Sexist garbage
I hope another studio picks up YOI, 8 years man an all we waited for was a disappointment
There was a movie in the works?
YOI was not profitable to them simply bcoz they are the last one in production comittee. "Avex Pictures, TV Asahi, Dentsu, CIC, CyGames, TV Asahi Music, Movic, MAPPA" . That means all these companies who invested more in YOI takes most of profit and mappa only get crumbs. Avex is the top comittee member and if they wanted, they could've taken YOI to other studios. Removing mappa is not that hard since they were last in that list.
I'm just saying that there are a lot more factors that go into a production than simply the animation studio, and cursing out the people within the studio for a situation in which very little light has been shed, isn't helpful at all
Good point. Unfortunately, not many fans see it that way.

I'm afraid that it will be forgotten by most people after it is announced to be cancelled.😢It feels so uncomfortable
Basically mappa wanted all the profit to go solely to themselves, like they did with chainsaw man. YOI being a anime produced by multiple production committees would mean all profits would be split between them. And that’s assuming if mappa, at the time of negotiations and contracts, agreed to earning a small amount to animate it and keep a certain percentage of the dvd/merchandise sales. Hence why they called it quits.
In any other situation, I would be glad if any anime studio stood their ground against the production committees, considering how little they want to pay them to produce a high quality show. But mappa has shown us time and time again, that despite all their success, the work conditions and pay for the employees has not improved for them. And let’s be honest, if mappa were to earn the majority of the profits, those employees wouldn’t see a fraction of it.
You could say the same for any other so what the damn point?
mappa also pays above the industry standard for animators in japan, so you got that point wrong. Majority of studios pays by commission per drawing but mappa is one of very few anime studios that actually pay their staff a wage/salary
We need to boycott Mappa!!!

Nope it doesn’t
@@BurningRubber454 then what did,?

Im sad
Mappa taking step back is strange, it's a sign that mappa is at high level of chaos.
After jjk s2 the studio looks dry
They waited too long and they blue balled the fans.
There are a couple of project and anime that were cancelled but they are rare for reference the ones i can think off are:
*Heaven's Lost Property s3*. IT was cancelled and what little was already made was salvaged and compiled into that shitty movie they made.
*Gargantia of the Verdous Planet S2*: Also cancelled for some reason what was suppose to be s2 was instead released as a sequel book but only in japan.
*Hybrid X Hybird*: S2 was announced but never made, the studio that made it went bankrupt and imagine with the legal rights and time fell off the radar.
Still this is a dick move by Mappa considering they already took way to many projects and not to honor making this movie as promised is a shame in their name, which is already in shambles/.
The boat was sinking and they avoided to be drowned. What’s wrong with that? It’s shocking and a sad news for the fans yes, but no sponsors would invest something clearly would be failed. No need to be upset, just accept the reality. It’s a business matter.
Yuri on ice? more like Yaoi got iced
How horrible must have been the productions if they hadn't cancelled JJK S2?
Mappa is giving their employee holidays
They should've just called me a slur at least that's more straightforward.
As someone who’s part of the queer community YOI was impactful in a lot of ways. It was the first time that queer protagonists were on mainstream anime and it was accepted especially since the main protagonists are Japanese and Russian respectively where both countries unfortunately have some very anti LGBTQIA+ policies and mindsets.- The show singlehandedly inspired so many people like myself to embrace their sexuality. It portrayed a healthy relationship between two people of the same sex, it navigated ideas on sexuality, anxiety and depression in such an impactful and healthy way.
Ice Ado being cancelled isn't just a hit for anime lovers in general but those part of the LGBTQIA+ movement as well who were inspired by Yuuri on ice.
That being said Viktor and Yuuri hands down have the most healthiest relationship in any anime i’ve ever seen, the fact that we won’t get Viktor’s story is very upsetting since he obviously had his own trauma’s that were never really explored. But for them to drag the movie on with no news and update and then cancel it with no detailed explanation is just disappointing…
Industry burnout. Lots of employees left.
The cancellation notice was basically a "fuck you,you waited for nothing" for the fans
It's a yuri anime, which generally speaking doesn't do well in the broader marketplace.

(i blame Crunchyroll's crappy Awards for my mindset on this show) . before the kids decide to attack me and send me death threats like they did back then (good times dealing with the crybabies) . Considering they knew it underperformed financially at the offset, but was their breakout show and sunk 7 years of development (including associated costs) into it anyway, I suspect there may be something deeper going on here. I listened to a Walt Disney Biography recently, and the costs of animation have always been daunting. Cost is a consideration, but sometimes there are projects you do for the long-term gains, awards, prestige, etc - even taking other work to support it because it will help with growth and other goals overall that are also important to an animation studio's overall health. I.E. the success of the original series helped get them bigger and better contracts and IP to work on, so if they can pull off the movie follow up and that can bring them more big contracts like that, it could be a reasonable growth strategy even if the movie isn't set to make them money directly. My sneaky hunch is that maybe there was something they were having trouble resolving with the story, as it was a fully original story without a strong source material to pull from. Since they were newcomers before and not being trusted with established IP, they had to make that work, but perhaps something was not lining up and would have thrown the whole thing off if they could just deliver on the animation and not the story. In that case it may make sense to cut the losses of what resources were already sunk into it to keep the memory of the original series in place - probably COMBINED with cost concerns and already 7 years into development. Or, potentially, it made sense after the initial success of the series to create the movie, but as they have been able to do other big projects to success and get involved with established IP, they may not have retained the team necessary to pull off that level of storytelling, or simply don't need the project to leverage more projects of that kind as they managed to get a proven track record in the meantime.
