- As an elite soldier serving in Afghanistan, Tobias Gutteridge’s life was changed forever by a single bullet.
The shot penetrated his neck, severing his spinal cord and leaving him paralysed from the chin down.
Toby faced the unimaginable realisation that his life was changed forever, being confined to a wheelchair with a respirator helping him breathe, and requiring around-the-clock care.
He struggled with drug abuse, mental health challenges, and the on-going temptation to pursue an assisted suicide.
It’s a story of resilience, strength, and hope in the face of the most brutal circumstances. This man is an inspiration, a true fighter, and an example to us all.

Its people like this our media should be celebrating, patriotic, humble and courageous. Instead they focus on bad actors, tiktok stars and Love Island. The country owes our injured warriors BIG time.

As a C5/C6 quadriplegic myself, my hat goes off to you for persevering as it's not easy at all, especially as you had an easy out. Not sure I would have kept going so you have my respect.
Holy cow. I'm ex-Forces - some stuff happened which ended my career and left me in a bit of a mess psychologically. I've always felt quite proud of pulling myself back out of it, but shit me this has put my simple, blessed life into perspective. What a man. What an interview. I needed this.

I spent 2months in a spinal unit broke my back in 2places and it scared me bigtime but I was lucky so massive respect to this chap .

Our armed forces are the best in the world and our special forces the best of the best. Toby, and people like him, take even that up a notch. To have been SF and then have to completely rebuild your life is simply awe inspiring. Forget about influencers, social media 'stars', celebrities, even sports stars, people like Toby are the ones we should look up to and the ones youngsters should learn about and admire. Stumbled across this podcast completely by accident and its given me a new perspective because if Toby can have a positive outlook on life then i sure as hell can! Truly inspirational because as someone who is looking at potential paralysis from a degenerative nerve condition its been tough but man this has really shown me that you can find the positives if you look hard enough!

Being an X-Squaddy myself we are all part of a brotherhood, and we all have our demons to bare but what you have been through both mentally & physically is incredible. Toby, you are an inspiration and total respect to you & so sorry for what you have been through & so glad you have pulled through. However.... the support network is an absolute disgrace and needs addressing but your strength of character is absolutely incredible. I have watched quite a few of these interviews now. They are all excellent in their individual ways! I think, Dodge, you've proved that taking a slightly old school interview technique; by being a confident, powerful listener; and guiding the guest through the conversation with short precise questions and clarifying where needed (on the viewers behalf) makes for a better end product. Most interviewers these days try to force conversations into the more click baity areas without exploring the context. They also have an annoying habit of talking over the guest for no good reason. This tends to show either a lack of confidence and/or an ego that overshadows the guest. You're doing great stuff, keep it up, and I will be watching for sure!
