- Follow Pheidias, the chief builder for the Parthenon, as he supervises the construction of the new temple and faces charges of embezzlement.
--
The year is 432 BCE. As dawn breaks over Athens, Pheidias is already late for work. He is the chief builder for the Parthenon - Athens’ newest and largest temple- and when he arrives onsite, city officials accuse him of embezzling gold from the temple’s sacred central statue. He has until sundown to prove his innocence or face the courts. Mark Robinson outlines a day in the life of a Greek architect.
Lesson by Mark Robinson, directed by Hana Tintor & Laura Martinović.

@Question Everything - Thought Provoking Ideas, please question and provide the source of the quote at least. This is horrifyingly simplistic, considering the context of the quotation. No quote directly translated from ancient Greek would have sounded like this. Actual quotation is: "Laws are made to instruct the good, and in the hope that there may be no need of them; also to control the bad, whose hardness of heart will not be hindered from crime." Plato, Laws book 9, 880d-e, trans. Benjamin Jowett. This is even a bad translation, the better ones are by Thomas Pangle. And Phidias is not a kind of person Plato especially admired, nor one famous for lawfulness, considering his low opinion about art and artists in the "Republic." The construction of the Acropolis and Parthenon is heavily criticized in Plato's "Gorgias," not as a pointless aesthetic expense, but a sign of moral corruption.

I suppose the goddess is too magnificent to stay in a measly mortal's phone screen...

As a Greek I am very happy to see our culture and history being represented so accurately and skillfully. Ευχαριστώ (thank you as we say in the homeland).
Modern day "Greeks" has as much connection with the ancient culture of Greece as modern Egyptians have with ancient Egypt. If it wasn't for the British and the French to remove the dust of history you would be sitting on top of those ruins without realizing the meaning of it all. You should indeed be thankful.
@@kohterg3713 the fact that our culture inspires people should be considered as a testament to our importance in the cultural sphere. I suspect you were also 'inspired' to commit to the process of 'διάλογος' (conversation), although you have a funny way of showing it.
@@mbbbits4847 I find it ridiculous how one is bragging about the past while being obsolete in the present let alone being of any sort of relevance for the future. It seems a persistent trait of any undeveloped country... which is pity for everyone's sake, especially the young generations that are yet to come. I'm not downplaying the importance of ancient cultures, but rather trying to punch through people's "ἐγώ" in hopes of awakening them.

@@kohterg3713 you probably say that because you have no culture and history yourself. You lack of pedia.
There are lots of centaurs carved in the scenes. Their leader, Chiron, was also a god of medicine and pharmacy. So you could say that he was a Centaur for Disease Control and Prevention.

As a just graduated architect, this is so cool, my poor man Phidias tho :c

I thought of her too. Especially with the Athena Parthenos.

Your not.

But after 24 hours he called it a day.

I'm an Architect by name and I need constant reminder on why I am. These kinds of stories keeps reminding me as to why I started this path. I will design my masterpiece one day.

History of Architecture 1. I can still remember how our instructor enthusiastically retold the construction of this temple (and many other architecture). His enthusiasm was the reason why I love the HOA subjects so much to the point that I don’t need to study for every exam. Because I was legit listening to every word he said and learned a lot from it.
The HOA subjects were some of the best ones in Architecture school.
Hey, where did you study and who was your instructor?
Why do I find his voice so soothing
It’s like ur in a movie and u wake up, the sun is shining, the birds chirping, and ur dog comes to greet u😌

I've finished watch this
great video! just one word though: if i remember well, the parthenon is not a temple, it's more of what we would call a treasury (like the siphnian treasury), ie a gigantic offering, which hosts other smaller offerings (the main one here being the athena parthenos).
also people wouldn't have made libations nor sacrifices in temples: altars were outside, in front of temples, as the goal was for the blood to run down to the ground and the smoke up to the sky and gods. :)
I'm building a pantheon-like temple in Minecraft as my home. So this is actually really inspiring!

Interesting video but how about the Think like a coder series
It seems that the role of an architect has changed since then. Nowadays architects focus on the esthetics only while in ancient times they were also engineers and construction managers.
