  • Dale Jr. kept his thoughts about his recent test of the NASCAR Next Gen car at North Carolina's Bowman Gray Stadium to himself, wanting to save his thoughts for this podcast. He shares the experience and his concerns for the new Cup machine moving forward. He also spikes on Clint Bowyer's claim of being the fastest driver at the test.

    Good analysis Dale...this was interesting. I had a 1971 Corvette that handled like it was on rails (as most Vettes do) and I found out one day where the limit was as I spun out. It was sticking and turning just fine...until it wasn't. I am just an average guy but I used to be able to tell in a car, or when I raced go karts, when I was getting close to the edge in a turn and then I would back off. Not with that Vette. Zero warning, at least to my senses. Luckily all I did was spin and didn't hit anything. Never pushed it much after that.

      Yep, been there, done that...and was hoping that mid engine design Vette would of came out 40 years ago because of it ...luckily most of my Snap Spins were low speed ones, but they still happened, and the torch red color, wasn't as red as on my face...I too, just slowed down more on the corners, for everyone's safety....It is like driving on ice when it happens, and it's a sunny day on dry pavement....go figure.

    Here's a thought. Often times I see people wanting less on throttle/ full throttle time around tracks. People like me would likely rather see these drivers struggle to put the power down, pedaling their cars and fighting for traction. Of course, there's a sweet spot with this where both the speed and battles are good but anyway, In my mind that equates to more exciting racing. At least to an extent. Do we really need wider tires and more grip?

    • @redneckhippiefreak
      @redneckhippiefreak Před 2 lety +4

      Well, I dunno.. Maybe that Sweet spot will be smaller than we expect? With more grip comes more wear...and subsequent Reliance on it. Over all, Id wager that as the field adjusts to the wider tire and harder braking, the effects for the fans wont change much. As for the drivers and fans, There will certainly be some exciting races with all the changes but, as the drivers settle in they will find weaknesses and benefits they can exploit Id say, over the season the results will be in and then effect the next seasons adjustments to the car and drivers alike.. Kinda like the "Car of Tomorrow" it will sink, swim or be adopted into future designs to better fit competition and performance on both the safety and Drivability. If it gets too boring, Someone will ax the program.

    I’m wondering what is going to happen when the front of the new car hits the diffuser of another car. Is the diffuser metal? If so, that won’t be good for the car hitting it. I fully understand the concerns about the maximum steering angle of the new car vs the current unit and the low profile tires and how they affect the ability of the driver to sense the start of the "yaw" or rotation of the car. When the California Highway Patrol bought the 1991 Camaro RS for pursuit duties, the EVOC staff at the CHP academy recommended to the CHP commissioner that officers assigned to patrol in the RS travel to the academy for a 3 day course with emphasis on high speed turning and road course duties. I was one of the division RS training instructors in Southern California. Much of the racing world writ large has been running on 18" wheels & tires for ages now, and you learn how they talk. If you were to bolt 15" wheels & tires onto IMSA GT sports cars, the drivers would be commenting on how uncontrollable the cars are. Although I'm a huge motorsports fan, I haven't followed NASCAR closely since I was a kid in the early '90s. I'm very excited in the Next Gen car, and it makes me interested in the series again. NASCAR is supposed to be a STOCK CAR racing body. The last time any cars at a NASCAR event were actually stock cars was in the early 1970s. What you see today are tube frames with fiberglass bodies and engines that you cannot get at a dealership. The "races" are little more than a parade until the final few laps. I prefer going to my local short track where there is lots of action and where admission is $10, not $300.

      hate to tell you but the 70s were even worse. half the cars didnt finish the race and most of the time the winner was the only car on the lead lap.

Said he wants to try the Chevy on different tracks, why not try all the makes? Test the Ford and Toyota too…would be interesting to hear his feedback between the brands, if any.

      They already leave the side window off at a few short tracks. They need to find how to direct more usable fresh air onto the driver. The side windows on this new car are just slightly smaller than the current generation of Cup cars…

      Aaron Rose, horsepower differences are not much different. Gen-7, the HP is 550 for short tracks and 675-700 hp for the longer high-speed tracks. Gen-7 cars have near 2" wider tires and 18" low profile. Gen-6 cars used 15" tires and were near 2" less width.
