Keep the comments and suggestions for the next snack video coming! By the way... I'm so sorry for not shaking the chocolate milk on camera. I promise as soon as the video was finished and I drank the rest of it, it was very much shaken!! Thank you so much to everyone who has suggested different things to try and given me their thoughts on how best to enjoy certain snacks. You are all educating me so much and it's fantastic. Thank you again. I will do my best to reply to everyone! Curls

Cabruary NZ changed from cocoa butter to palm oil to cut cost about 10 years ago and there was a huge public backlash because it tasted different (they said it wouldn't taste different), and most NZ changed over to Whittakers and never looked back. • @slartibartfasttynsol420
      @slartibartfasttynsol420 Před rokem +19

Yeah - they were trying to improve the numbers before the sale to Kraft in 2010.
They shrank the bars, switched to less environmentally friendly packaging that disguised the reduced size, and put palm oil in, so you got less chocolate.
The palm oil was the last straw for me.
Farming of palm oil is responsible for deforestation, and loss of habitat, driving species to extinction.
The farming uses herbicides and pesticides which cause health issues for the farmers community.
The farmers live in poverty, with no choice but to farm.
Additionally, palm oil is high in saturated fats, and once oxidized in food production can pose health issues for consumers.
I avoid Cadbury products. (Made easier by the fact that Whitkars tasks better.)

I work in a post shop, and the three biggest items sent are, Reduced Cream, Onion Dip, and Whittaker's Chocolate. They are the most requested items by expats from their family's here in New Zealand. The Pineapple Lumps used to be better, but Pascals changed their recipe and they are not as good as they used to be. With the chocolate milk, when it first came out you had to line up to get it and the you were limited to how many you could get at a time, even then you were lucky to get one as they kept selling out and they couldn't keep up with the production. Didn't get to try one until six months had passed, haven looked back since, but you are right they are a real treat item due to the cost. But soooo worth it :)
When we have a BBQ or family get together the fights over the onion dip can get a bit intense.

I'm 73. I was a pre-teen and teenager through the 1960's. Nestlé had their Reduced Cream in a tin, which wasn't wildly popular when we still had fresh dairy products delivered to the gate every morning. Including fresh cream.
At the same time, Maggi powdered soups were new to NZ and again, people hesitated to buy. Making your own soup was so normal for the post war family.
Rosemary Dempsey popularised (maybe invented ?) the Onion dip. Among us under 20's it took off like crazy !
We had no wartime memories of 'canned dairy' or 'powdered soup' and it was quick and easy to prepare, and could wait until your flatmates had a party. Then, all on !!

Their specialty was wiring the rocks, in which doing, everything is taken. Driving from as far as Auckland and Hawkes Bay for a tide these wankers are now noted, and their tyres slashed. THE iconic kiwi chocolate bar is the Whitkars Peanut Slab. The milk chocolate one is the original (not the dark or the almond). I remember being so annoyed when Cadbury's tried to steal/ copy this and brought out the 'Slab', exact small size. Thank goodness local Kiwi's refused to buy it and it is no longer!! Of course the NZ Marmite goes without saying, it's thicker than the UK version. Other classic childhood treats that you can normally only get from the local dairy are K-bars and Toffee Milk bars. Both are hard, tooth breaking bars, especially the K-bar. You have to really suck on this one! These are both from Whittakers. Original Toffee Pop biscuits are a classic. There is a technique for eating these that is also important for a lot of fans. You nibble the fluted edge of the biscuit first, before eating the rest! You tried all the right things and followed the right steps, even including the lemon juice in the onion dip - bang on! Others have tried it and completely skipped that step and honestly, it's not right. It needs that acidic touch. Adding salt and vinegar chips - also very wise! Nothing else matches it better. Also, Blue V is the BEST! I was obsessed with it a years ago but now it's so good as a once in a while treat! Honestly you share the same opinion as me on all of the foods! You didn’t have to but it’s awesome you felt a responsibility given how tough it is for a lot of people out there both in NZ and world wide
Hopefully it’s inspired some people to give a little where they can
I know I’ll be donating to my nearest food bank on my next pay and we are living week for week tbh but we can always forgo a few luxuries for some families in need
Class act and I love your videos

    Loved this!
Dont keep your pineapple lumps in the fridge that makes them hard and they’re better when they’re chewy
    Some other foods to try
Pie sandwich - yup put a pie in bread haha
    Sausage roll
Creamed paua - really nice on hot chips
    Hangi
    Boil up
    Toffee pops
Squiggles - yellow are the best
    Krispies
Peanut slab! Hands down the best Whittaker’s chocolate
    Fry bread!
    Steamed pudding and custard
Raw fish also known as ika mata

The cool thing with onion dip and using the soup mix, is that you can swap out the onion for any other soup. I love the pumpkin and I’ve heard of people using the seafood.
Lewis Roads is the best and they bring out new flavours all the time. There’s another brand of flavoured milk, you might wanna try, which is Puhoi. My cousin loves it.

You have great taste in choices of flavours, I don't know why I enjoy watching people enjoy our favourite snacks so much! Just watched all of your videos and they are great, I look forward to watching more!
    Would recommend:
    • Whittakers Peanut Slab
    • RJ's liquorice (pink ones in a bag is my favourite)
    • Freeze the pineapple lumps, they are way better that way for some reason
    • Shapes crackers
    • Hundred and Thousand cookies
    • Watties Tomato sauce with things
I hope you have a good day. Much aroha! ❤️

Wow what an awesome comment and some amazing recommendations there! Peanut slab will definitely feature on the next video, mark my words! For some reason I have never been able to get on board with liquorice of any kind, but I'll give the RJ's brand a go for sure! Thanks again for these, I'll definitely be using some in the next video!

For the kiwi dip great combinations are carrots and celery. The obvious/most common is plain crackers or chips . Also I would add the "creamy seafood" sachet is also a very yummy dip if you like that seafood chowder taste (its usually for chowder but it's in the same packet as the onion dip)

The whakachangi brand salt and vinegar chips are super yum in dip. A fairly new brand but also worth it to read the hardcase description on the chip packet : P

Room temp Pineapple lumps bite different from refrigerated ones and yes that in itself is a whole thing in NZ lol

Even though I feel you may not like (as much as most do) but I feel you should try a Hangi and be sure that it is done ‘IN THE GROUND’ (the OG/cultural way) not above ground in those hangi pots.
Also I’ve always know the “Cheerios” small sausages to be called either ‘cocktails’ or ‘polonies’

When I was a kid (I'm 60 now) polonies were big and chubby - a bit larger than a normal sausage. When you went to the butcher with your Mum the butcher would nearly always give the kiddies a cheerio each. Loved them, even though they were cold. :-)

13:39 Tapping the can breaks the C02 bubbles and helps to minimize foaming out of the can or even explosion whit it opens due to pressure of being shaken around.
