BAKERY pies coming next! Keep the suggestions coming but I will definitely be hitting the bakeries for the next pie video. Thank you for the suggestions I really appreciate them! Curls
im a Brit i have been here since 1969. And i use this guys videos to show people in England who are thinking of moving down under what NZ is like. And Curls is as honest as the day is long.
Fat Bastard Pies from Invercargill are amazing. They have a subscription service accross NZ for mad keen pie lovers. Jimmy’s pies from Roxburgh have the best pastry and are so so good. Available in most South Island supermarkets.
I generally like bakery pies more than the commercial ones, my all time favorites are the Makatu Mussel Pie, and my local bakery steak and blue vein cheese pie. But runner ups are pepper steak, steak bacon and cheese.
If you genuinely think these supermarket pies are in the 9/10 range, I cant wait to see you’re ratings on bakery pies! While you’re at the bakery make sure to check out lolly cake aswell because that’s a big thing here in NZ! Keep up the great stuff, love to see you’re enjoying NZ
Brother, you’re missing out by not sampling BP and Z’s pies. Butter chicken (vegan if you can believe it) from BP and cheesy mushroom pie at Z petrol station. Chef’s kiss to both, mate. Gotta try them.
I grew up on the caltex ones. Then they changed the pie. Then they just consistently increase the price. Swear they were 2 for 4 bucks at my local less than 10 years ago. Now they're double that. Still have the sign outside saying that, but I think they should just stop advertising. Can get a 6 pack of frozen pies for the same cost, or go to a fancier place and spend a dollar more per pie. Guess it's still more convenient
I've grown up in NZ and nothing gives me the fondest memories as the smell of Big Ben pies on the air at primary school. But over the years most popular pies have gone down so dramatically, so small pie shop/bakery pies are the way to go. Best pies in Auckland I think are Muzzas Pies in Mt Albert.
Yep - but you gotta be in quick. I have seen queues going out the door and down the road. Wait until late and what you want may well have sold out. Oh well, everything they do is excellent - savoury pies, sausage rolls, custard pies, apple turnovers... They never skimp and I love how you can see them making everything while you stand in the shop waiting your turn. So if they run out of something I figure that means it's time to try something you haven't before. :-)
"Who Ate All The Pies ?" is a gourmet brand of pies also available in hand pie size. Available in Wellington at Countdown supermarkets. Flavours include Chicken, Cranberry & Brie, and Venison Thyme & Red Wine
I miss the meat pies from the dairy. Here its the corner shop which have most things but hot meat pies. Once on my return from a trip to NZ, i packed some pies in my suitcase. Unfortunately, i had a stopover in Sydney & customs took them off me & chucked them in the bin.
I feel awful but I laughed soo hard at the change of your facial expression from being blissfully excited to sooo let down by the lamb, rosemary and mint pie. Along with most others responses the bakery pies are far superior so I'm super excited for that review video.
Blow on the pie safer communities together lol! 😅 love it ! Best pies I've had are Sheffield pies bakery in Sheffield, I recommend👍 or Hillyers Canterbury region.
I make Mince and Cheese pies using the Edmonds cookbook Shepherd's pie recipe for the Mince, pre-made frozen flaky Pastry, and Edam cheese. Super easy and delicious, you should try it.
Pies are generally better at Bakery's but cool to see some appreciation for these classics although there are branded pies with a much better depth of flavor then these. I recommend Ponsonby, Maketu and Dad's Pies.
There is an existing "Pie Awards". It is a prestigious annual, black tie event. I was lucky enough to go to one. It had a "007" theme. Sponsored by a large supplier. It was a fantastic night, highly professional and well presented. To get a placing allows the bakers to print money.
Z Petrol station has been my go to for pies the past few years - their mince and cheese, SO GOOD. The American buffalo chicken pie from BP station is amazing. During high school I loved getting a Top Up pie from the dairy on a winter's morning, they're probably the grossest-looking pies because they're floppy and yellow but they have a special place in my heart lol. I remember being told all the time, "Don't you know they have a golf ball of fat in them?" hahaha
The Maketu fish or Mussel pie are the best prepackaged pies if I can find it, but I usually settle for a big ben double steak & cheese or butter chicken if the bakeries aren't open. Would like to try the No8 pies particularly the steak & cheese, haven't seen them around the Waikato. Great video mate keep it up 👍👍
They look like these pies come from the supermarket. The Maketu pie is about an 1hr away from Rotorua, but if you come to Te Puke, there is a bakery called AA bakery. Top golden crunchy pastry steak and pepper pie.
You have to try a Fairlie Pie….my favourite is the Pepper Steak and my husbands favourite is the Pork Belly ….top selling and winners of everything south of Auckland 🥳
After returning from overseas and hearing people rave about the Fairlie battery pies I called in to try them. To be honest people seem to have been taken in by the hype. Good pies, but nothing to write home about, especially for the price they charge. There are much much better pies around
I'm a big meat eater but my sister inlaw is a vegan and introduced me to the Hub Gourmet Pies - Kumara & Cashew Vegan Pie and they're honest in my top 10 favourite pies. Really nice. Also my favorite Dairy type pie is Oxfords mince and cheese. Give those a try. You won't be disappointed.
Jimmy’s pies 😍😍😍😍 they can only be found in the South Island though. Second best is Maketu, normally you can find them at supermarkets already hot in the warmer by the hot chickens. Irvines have gone foul as faaaark over the years but their bacon and egg still slap. Bakery pies always for the win these days, the bakehouse pies 😍😍 steak n cheese
If you ever visit the southern part of the south island get a Jimmies pie. Their range is pretty good, unlike the others they don't come in plastic packaging but in paper, and I think that helps in the cooking resulting in a more flakey pastry. Their potato top is the best.
Around 30 years ago, I worked in a Bakery (Harry's Place, in Dargaville) At 1pm, after the lunch rush, the baker would go home and I would stay and serve/ clean. I always had lunch at 1pm between serving customers. My favorite lunch was that I would cut the top off one of Harry's Pies (incredible pastry), shove a handful of REAL cheese in it and put it back into the oven to heat up. (Microwaves don't do a pie justice) One day, Harry came back because he had forgotten something, saw me doing it and asked me what I was doing... I said 'Having Lunch'. Next day I went in, he had made 12 mince and cheese pies... They disappeared from the pie warmer... Next day Steak and mince, Steak and cheese... same result. Soon these two pies became the bakeries biggest sellers. Kauri Bakeries/ Dargaville picked it up and then Whangarei Bakeries... soon it was all over New Zealand... I mean Cheese goes with everything 😁 ... REAL cheese... not that processed stuff some bakeries shove in to save money. My new favorite is cheese and taretare sauce over hot chips... Jimmy pies & PJ's Hanmer Springs - the South island masters of pies, Jimmy pies is a bucket list food stop for lunch(have a very light breakfast that day!!!), multiple fresh hot pies from their bakery shop - one is not enough!, and if you can't get the Jimmy pies fix in the upper south island its PJ's hanmer springs pies to the rescue. Either way your in pie heaven.
Makatu pies are definitely the best!! The flakey pastry and the filling I love the mince and cheese🤤 You can also try a Couplands Pie, not my fav but popular in NZ 😁
@@kristinreign8026 Na can't get those pies here and anyway nothing like grabbing some pies and heading down the beach to eat them :)...Yeah I am heading back to NZ in 2023 can't wait been here since 2012...was gutted I wasn't there to see our Wahine Blackferns win that cup would have been hellish :)
Not sure whether you can get them in Wellington, but some of the south island pies are amazing: Jimmies mince and cheese, Mac's mince, and any of the Fairlie Bakehouse pies.
@@mohork really ? I'm from waihi beach lived there about 15 years now living in Hamilton I go back for weekends , over summer Xmas period hope everything is ok with you mate
Love the idea to do Bakery pies! Not sure where to get the best in Wellington but in Auckland you can hit any bakery and the pies are often amazing. You'll try the occasional shit one and then know to not go back to that particular bakery lol
Jimmy's mince pies, from Roxburgh, Central Otago. Andersons mince and cheese pies, from Harwera,Taranaki. Sunny days mince pies, from Napier, Hawkes Bay.
I used to work at maketu pies. If you ever happen to come across a countdown then your definitely guaranteed to come across one of the maketu pies. Their best (in my opinion) is the smoked fish. Don't be shy to give it a try.
Does anyone remember the mild curry flavoured pies you got at Lancaster Park Christchurch in the 1970's? They were beaut. Come to think of it, they were supplied throughout Canterbury New Zealand.
I am sad you didn't have a top up pie though. I believe its native to us in Hawkes bay. It isn't the BEST pie, like gourmet level as the bakery pies. But in terms of budget pies...theyre the best..it's best served when you're hung over and head down to the local dairy with your face still drawn on because you fell asleep first and you absolutely reek of alcohol. No, this pie. is god's hand coming down to wipe your tears away after rough night. a good top up pie can depend on the dairy though. I personally like mine soft and bouncy. These arent flaky pies, which I love the most. . i might go get me one right now actually haha
ALWAYS…Always blow on the pie 😅 Jimmy’s Pies from my home town of Roxburgh 👍 Where ever you go in NZ try the local bakery pies… you will always find something new and wonderful 🙂 Live the Pie Life 😋
Best pie I ever had was from a bakery/cafe in Waiouru. Chicken and mushroom. Filling was shredded chicken in gravy, top wasn't pastry, it was a big portobello mushroom sprinkled with cheese then grilled yummy 😋 Not been up that way for many years so I don't know if the cafe is still there
Burning your mouth on the scolding hot pie is actually the correct way too eat a pie here in nz. If you don't get 3rd degree burns from that first bite you're doing it all wrong. 😂 great video brother
Hey mate, just started watching and enjoying your vids. As a kiwi living overseas, the very first I do when I return is track down a Coupland "Crusaders" pie (steak, cheers, kumara, and broccoli(don't let this put you off). In My opinion, best mass produced pie. Other things I craze and get in me ASAP, whittakers chocolate, Jelly Tip, Berry biscuit, or Creamy milk. Also, Sweet Thai clilli Doritos with sour cream. Moro Gold and chikito bars are also in my list. Keep up the good work, I approve. Haha
10/10 gourmet pies at Wellington Hospital! also grab their big sausage rolls. They have a canteen out the back of the Hospital. You won't be disappointed
Jimmy's Pies ... Roxburgh made. Fantastic pies, my FAV .... U need to try. Need to do South Island pies. Fat Bastards are also good from Invercargill. Please make it your mission, can't go wrong. Way better than North Island pies 🤤🤯🥰
I'm based in Auckland so we don't get the No 8 pies... however we do get quite a number of other brands which weren't covered... - Who Ate All the Pies? - Luv a Pie - Bakers Son pies - Dad's pies - Oxford Pies - Ponsonby Pies The Luv a Pie pies are especially good as they use a sour cream pastry. Unfortunately, they're all family sized, and I don't believe they make individual serve. As a suggestion perhaps you should consider visiting the different cities or regions and sampling their pie brands?
Maketu Pies are now in Greymouth so they may be in Wellington now. I lived in Tauranga for 3 years and that's where I first tried them because Maketu, being a small seaside town in the Bay of Plenty have their own pie factory there. They are SO good, try the Seafood or Mussel pies.
If you're still trying to find Makatu pies you can usually find them at most Countdowns. They sell them both hot and cold but if you want one hot they usually put them in the warmer around 12:30 - 12:45 (at least in Kapiti) but they sell out quick. Keep up the good content!
CURLS!!!’ Do yourself and your friends a favour and make sure you get yourself a bucket of cookie time cookies for Xmas. Proceeds go to a good cause and they’re a kiwi Xmas institution! Can order online.. they’re fab for Xmas pressies for the mates. They’re always appreciated 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 Ps, the apricot or the cranberries are great! But theirs heaps of other flavours to try. Wow thank you what an amazing idea! I have had these in previous years but never actually bought my own, I'll make sure I do that this year and give them a shout out in a video. By the way sorry for missing your comment about Instagram the other day, I've just followed you back! Curls
If your going to settle for petrol station quality pies then BP pies are the way to go. All those ones are pretty average pies, head to a proper bakery and get fresh baked pies. Jesters pies in Jville have a great flavour range, the pastries a bit thinner the most NZ pies though.
Blue rose has THE best pies in Sandringham, Auckland ranging from palosami, hangi, pork n cream cheese, roast lamb and spaghetti Bolognese they are huge but soooo good 👍 ❤

Add Jo’s Pies in Brooklyn, Wellington to your list for the next one. Famously excellent! I don’t eat pastry anymore but these are tempting! 😍😍
Patrick's Pies have won the most awards. You can get them in Tauranga or at Gold Star Bakery in Rotorua. 🥧
Curls: Looks Good
*takes a bite
Also Curls: AGONY AGONY!!!
Pies go really well with a L&P at the end
ALWAYS…Always blow on the pie 😅
Jimmy’s Pies from my home town of Roxburgh 👍
Where ever you go in NZ try the local bakery pies… you will always find something new and wonderful 🙂
Live the Pie Life 😋
Best pie I ever had was from a bakery/cafe in Waiouru. Chicken and mushroom. Filling was shredded chicken in gravy, top wasn't pastry, it was a big portobello mushroom sprinkled with cheese then grilled yummy 😋
Not been up that way for many years so I don't know if the cafe is still there
Big Ben is pretty iconic my guy, one to add to the list
Burning your mouth on the scolding hot pie is actually the correct way too eat a pie here in nz. If you don't get 3rd degree burns from that first bite you're doing it all wrong. 😂 great video brother
honestly not even sure how I found your channel bro but I love these videos and will keep coming back for more
Hey mate, just started watching and enjoying your vids. Haha
"That's too hot!", goes in half a second later for another bite.
Rookie errors all round!
Consistent as always uso x! Lmfao! Your reaction for the last pie!!! HAHAHAHA. Loved the video man, Keep up the hard work x!
Joeeeeee!!!!!! Love you boy!!!! Need to make an appearance soon man been too long xxx
@@itscurlsbaby facts brother! I just got a job at dockside restaurant so will be busy but keen to link!
Absolute best roast I've ever heard
your face when you bit into the lamb pie 😂🤣
10/10 gourmet pies at Wellington Hospital! also grab their big sausage rolls. They have a canteen out the back of the Hospital. You won't be disappointed
Also definitely bp pies. Any of them are fantastic. Love the bp butter chicken
Most Countdown stores have Maketu Pies, you'll find them in the chiller near the deli section. Not the main chiller section
Jimmy's Pies ... Roxburgh made. Fantastic pies, my FAV .... U need to try. Need to do South Island pies. Fat Bastards are also good from Invercargill. Please make it your mission, can't go wrong. Way better than North Island pies 🤤🤯🥰
13.11 thinking about his life decisions he made the day he ate that last pie🤣🤣🤣🤣Awesome brother 🤘🏾
I'm based in Auckland so we don't get the No 8 pies... however we do get quite a number of other brands which weren't covered...
- Who Ate All the Pies?
- Luv a Pie
- Bakers Son pies
- Dad's pies
- Oxford Pies
- Ponsonby Pies
The Luv a Pie pies are especially good as they use a sour cream pastry. Unfortunately, they're all family sized, and I don't believe they make individual serve.
As a suggestion perhaps you should consider visiting the different cities or regions and sampling their pie brands?
Mackenzie egg and hash brown is my favourite pie ever you should try it.
Love your videos 😅
I love it how you don’t waste anything, that’s our Kiwi attitude 💯 love your videos from Auckland
The pies can make you or break you... Will try No.8 soon. Thanks brother 😎
Oh no!
Always blow your pie before having a bite 😂
My English workmate went to NZ and was very impressed with the pies ingeneral.
Well worth it! X
Wow thank you what an amazing idea! I have had these in previous years but never actually bought my own, I'll make sure I do that this year and give them a shout out in a video. By the way sorry for missing your comment about Instagram the other day, I've just followed you back! Curls
Jimmy's Pies - Mutton pie is awesome.
Irvine's do a cheeseburger pie which is pretty damn good.
BP Angus beef & cheese is a great garage pie
Bahahahaha!! "Always blow on the pie" is another Kiwi expression. Now you know why
If your going to settle for petrol station quality pies then BP pies are the way to go.
All those ones are pretty average pies, head to a proper bakery and get fresh baked pies.
Jesters pies in Jville have a great flavour range, the pastries a bit thinner the most NZ pies though.
Dad's pies are a personal fav, if you can get your hands on a pepper steak maybe - but would definitely add my vote to you trying BP pies!
Blue rose has THE best pies in Sandringham, Auckland ranging from palosami, hangi, pork n cream cheese, roast lamb and spaghetti Bolognese they are huge but soooo good 👍 ❤
