A very good script, the delighful, soft and sweet colors of the 50's, an interesting cast (Sidney Blackmer, Warren Stevens, Vera Ralston, Virginia Grey, and Lee Van Cleef fascinating as usual)... So, dispite a direction without imagination, a little unexpected gem.

Do not believe the negative comments,the movie is awesome!! Really Good actors,great scenario,great cars,great clothes,great era!.Great movie! Especially from Republic Pictures ! The photography & production values are higher here than in most of their movies.
Oooh, I loved all of the furniture and interiors; especially the lime green office chair! Nice to see it all in vibrant colour!
The Gilbert Rohde Cloud table mixed in with the Paul Frankl console and other California pieces in Scarfaces apartment.
That Paul Frankl is generally acknowledged as the only one ever imported from Idaho.

Hello from Russia. Those cars ! They remind me of my granddad's Volga 21 ( obviously inspired by 1950s Ford models). Good old times, good old movies.

Patients in these old movies always had their heads wrapped in a white napkin.
Joan Crawford helped get David Brian into film. It's a good movie with her and David Brian called "The Damned Don't Cry". Check it out. Oh, Lee Van Cleef I knew his face but I was thinking older in those western movies. He was a youngster here. This movies was entertaining gets the mind off of the harsh realities of life. The colors of these type movies helps.
Totally agree with you in regards to "The Damned Don't Cry". Excellent noir with a top notch cast (Joan, Davie, Steve Cochran, Kent Smith, etc). And yes, it was Joan Crawford indeed that helped David Brian get his start in the movies (starting off with a contract with Warner Bros).

This is the kind of flick where it's good to be an history buff. Not that the story is historic, but the scenes are.

Enjoyed this a lot. Every trope in the book, well done. Made in 1956 by the way, and interesting to find a B movie in color. Some folks are confused by the label "English" movie. It means English language, not made in England.

The "Old White Car" is a Lincoln Mark II Coupe. Ford made them between 1955 and 1957..

Wow big change for Vera Ralston. The 1947 film The Flame she was a blonde Femme Fatale. Here in 1956 her hair much shorter, really looks different, the heavy accent gave her away. She did four more films to end her career. Lee Van Cleef as a cop...doesn't work for me. He's a badass, crook, con man, heavy!😊
Vera owed her film career to being the mistress & later wife of the head of Republic Pictures, Herbert J. Yates.
Most people today wouldn't get the irony of the Sargent's name being Lackey. For those who don't know it means servant, especially a liveried footman or manservant. Aka az kisser.

Since the opening credits are not shown, I had to look up info about the movie elsewhere online. Released by Republic Pictures in Dec. of 1956. Looks like a good cast of veteran faces & love the lush color photography ! Unusual for a flick from Republic Pictures.

Great to see this restored version screened in the correct Naturama aspect ratio of 2.35:1, and the color resolution shows how good was Republic/Consolidated's later three-color Trucolor, always lampooned by the arty posers. Shame that Republic's better release programme of 1956 did not work out for them.
Great Movie but commercials every 5 minutes are not so good.
That light blue car at 1:08:09 looks like a piece of sculpture, gorgeous!

The one thing that bugs me about these old movies is the police act like they don't need anything but a hunch to arrest and charge someone.

well done though it feels a bit artificial, the acting and the setting..the filmstudio very much is noticeable a filmstudio, but fair enough, it's overall very stylish, modern and clean looking. at the end a well crafted piece of film.

David Brian a notch or 2 higher had a good run in the 50s-there not robert taylor or ty power-
But they made some vert entertaing films :
Agree 100 per cent. Neither Warren nor David became big stars, but they certainly had long careers in character roles (both on the big screen & on TV).
GREAT COLORFUL 50s the American dream and certainly its Camelot! Beautiful women and badass men with stunning cars with wild paint jobs! Today our parking lots of white, gray, black clown cars that are egg shaped imitations of each other. Look and how much dignified everyone dressed! Today people look like hippies and are graffitied head to toe.

Forensics didn’t figure much in the story. No powder burns from the discharge and no evidence of her presence in the car. Things weren’t adding up. The band had a double bass and sounded like a huge string section.

Sidney Blackmer age well from the 1930s and 40s.
Why do movies have songs in it and a supposed little Ensemble playing behind a vocalist when the music to the song has several violins playing and orchestral instruments and the only thing showing in the movie is four or five musicians playing instruments that don't match the actual music also the actress lip syncing the vocal is way to dramatic to almost be campy
Because they had just replaced their crackly old gramophone with a traistorised plast job and could get a recording for just a few bucks.
Ahh, fantasy
And the characters are much older than they are in the film and the women have tobacco and alcohol voices
And the whole movie with background music 🙄
That's probably done so they can call it noir.
