How did we go from wearing such gorgeous clothes to ripped jeans?
Great question! Who knows
"WE" didn't. YOU did.
Comfort is compromised when Putting on the Ritz and is not something the average person in society would wear, possibly ever in their lifetime.
The ordinary working classes barely had one set of apparels. The Toffs & Middle Classes were much different.
Ha ha ha,
I love black & white films i can watch em all day but i love watching them only at night when going to bed
Her wardrobe was everything!
Don't you love the good old B&W movies of yesterday ???
Amazing acting, no smut, no special effects, just spectacular story lines and actors that knew how to carry a story line to the final credits.
They were true actors, not movie stars.
YES I DO, LOVE THESE OLD B/W MOVIES, WISH THOSE DAYS WERE HERE TODAY!!!!
And great costume designers
Sooooo true! Even the supposedly B pictures have substance, beauty and intelligent dialogue!
It is sad because in days gone by dressing up, no matter what your income was, made going out somewhere "Special" and you felt special. You could have just one outfit you wear only for those times and it made you smile and excited about the event (dinner, a play, dancing, attending your church, visiting a group of friends, or just strolling along a tree lined avenue with someone) There is always at least one outfit within your budget even if bought at a thrift store that makes you happy when you wear it. Accept the challenge and go find that lovely or handsome clothing that makes the occasion perfect!
Amazing old movie, can't believe I'm watching it in 2023. Lovely costumes, beautiful drama
Merle Oberon is absolutely gorgeous.
She's no Marie Dressler, but she was indeed one beautiful lady !
The sets are incredible. She wears at least 30 different dresses!
"I always say women are wonderful. But they need too many repairs."😛 Great line!
"Is she? I hadn't noticed. I have eyes only for you," how many times have I heard this sorry line?!! Men! They're such players 🤣🤣
Well, I´d like to see a contemporary actress or celeb (K Kardashian need not apply) wear a dress with such elegance and poise. Her waist is unbelievable, and no lipo back then. And the craft of those seamstresses is simply out of this world.
The lovely wild Kathy, Katherine Eurnshaw in the Classic Wuthering Heights, that was over shadowed by the greatest year of Oscar Best
Tight corsets were figure enhancing.
No ...but they did
Have corsets !!!
Her dresses, hats, jewelry - OH MY!!!!
Brilliant movie. Brilliant print. Thanks Chris T. In real life too, she had to hide her personal life, as in this film. She was born in Bombay to a British Engineer and Sinhalese mother. After her father died in WW1, she and her mother moved to Calcutta where she faced discrimination among the European community due to her mixed parentage and dropped out of school. She was active in amateur theatre and worked as a receptionist. Her first engagement in Calcutta to a British army officer also broke up because of her mixed parentage. For the rest of her life she feared this discrimination and pretended to be born in Tasmania where her birth records were lost. Sometimes art imitates life.
Oberon was the perfect temptress.
great movie, these classics are of higher quality than a lot of modern movies. Merle Oberon is stunningly beautiful and a perfect actress.
I couldn't imagine wearing such fancy, restricting white outfits in a hot climate like Egypt. Beautiful costumes but WOW.
I think most scenes were filmed in Hollywood, not Egypt.
And a spectacular figure also.
@@pauladouglas9891 She carries herself beautifully here. The only movie I didn't like her in was the one with Lawrence Olivier' . Some movie about divorce. I hated that movie.
@@richardtjan4757 It doesn't really matter. They had no Air conditioning back then. I would have been burning up on those dresses. 🤣🤣🤣
These older films are fabulous. The scripts are so far beyond today.
Agreed, the scriptwriting is great.
"Beyond today'. With fiction like that you should may be have been a writer. A lot is all a matter of taste and what scripts you grew up with during the more impressionable years. All just opinion.
@@sst6555 Ever heard of suspension of disbelief? Fiction doesn't have to be realistic.
I wouldn't go that far, I've seen going on 3 other movies from this era similarly plotted, like it was a theme for the time then, not to mention today.
I agree 💯 %. They were made with such class but evidently those days are gone… forever I fear ☹️
A showcase for Miss Oberon 🧚♀️✨️ she looks beautiful.
Enjoyed this movie, the Egyptian backdrop gave it a certain mystique
“A certain mystique…”
It gave it ALL the mystique….
Why are you such an uncommitted and lukewarm person….?
The beautifully done drama of life. This sort of film cannot be replicated any longer because the cultures that allowed for such actors to exist are gone and so has the memory of them. except for books and films made when that time was still remembered.
Now other „culture“ „enrich“ the western world.
Merle Oberon was absolutely stunning. She carried her role with wit, poise, grace and elegance. Combination that is hard to find in Hollywood today. Clever dialogue and classy even when directing the poison arrow at another person..
Merle Oberon was such a beautiful woman in this movie, couldn't keep my eyes off of her. A ravishing beauty! A truly classic movie, thanks so much for the upload.
As I do when I take off my hat, you make a good point !
Ms Oberon’s costumes by Orry Kelly were absolutely superb. ❤️❤️❤️
Some movie fashion trivia: That was Bette Davis’ favorite costume designer. He turned her black dress in All About Eve backward to accentuate her waist. Unlike Merle Oberon she lacked an hourglass figure. Orry Kelly gave her one! As needed😉
@@jeanettesdaughter I know … I just said I loved them.
@@jeanettesdaughter yes I know.
Beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder. I thought the gowns were ghastly, both in design and fit, and a shame for such a beautiful woman.
@@jeanettesdaughter Loved that black dress!
Adore Merle Oberon - the Great Indian/English Merle Oberon & never heard of or saw this film. Thank you so much! Thought I'd seen them all. Beautiful period costumes! They made making movies look like so much fun!!
@Mister Google To avoid prejudice over her mixed background, Oberon created a "cover story" of being born and raised in Tasmania, Australia, and her birth records being destroyed in a fire. Oberon's mother was a 12 years old 100% Indian child. Her father White British.
Terrific! Merle Oberon is luminous. Paul Lucas is great as always. The great cinematographer Lucian Ballard was married to Merle Oberon when he filmed this. And most curiously, the famous war photographer Robert Capa played Baroudi's servant, Hamza. Capa took the famous shot of the falling soldier, in the Spanish Civil War, and photographed the landing of the first wave of Americans on D-Day. He was killed by a land mine in Viet Nam in 1954.
Thank you!
Thanks for these these precious details.
@@IK-so2bm Thank you. It’s no more than retyping info from IMDb, but I enjoy sharing it.
Very interesting. Thank you.
She would be luminous if somebody was handy with a can of petrol and a match.
As my saintly grandmother used to say: What a lovely bunch of coconuts!
I have serious questions about the sanctity of your grandmother
And didn't Merv Griffin sing that when he was the vocalist for Freddy Martin's band ?
My granddad use to say that too. But he was always a breast man! 🤷♂️
I was born in 1946, the year this was made. My parents were big theater-goers and probably saw this movie when it first hit the theaters.
Paul Lucas was great, as the husband's friend and doctor. He's always worth the price of admission, himself.
Merle Oberon is so captivating, I was hooked in 5 minutes. So sad, she had to cover up her Indian heritage to be a success as an actress. Thank goodness for progress.
Can't cover up the fact she's a mixed race beauty!! It's quite apparent. She was gorgeous.
I read her mom was part Maori as well, and was only 12 when she had her, very disturbing.
her Mother was her older sister as it turned out@@cocoaorange1
She had her mother pretend to be her servant so people wouldn't know her background.
the costumes are just exquisite
Merle Oberon is so beautiful and totally underrated!🌹🌷
That’s because of her stuttering
Terrific movie, great acting, they just don't
make movies 🎥 like this anymore.
OMG, that woman's part was written to be a gold-digger! Arrogant, conniving. Nowadays, she would have her own reality show! Btw, if she needed the maid's help to get undressed, how did she manage by herself at the doctor's? Did the nurse lend a hand? The doctor's office is bigger than my whole apartment!
Now let's see ... what occasion would I have to wear a hat with a pound of faux cherries, or were they apples attached?
Kidding aside, one of the reasons I watch these older movies is due to the dress simply stunning.
From hats to shoes!
I simply adore these classic movie's, the dialogue, acting, costumes, storyline just wonderful!
Yup. Today's movies are garbage.
It's literally all i watch these days, the fact that movies now are so bad is great for older films to be rediscovered by this generation
I heartily concur ! I'd rather watch these marvelous films of yesteryear than most of what's being released today.
Beautiful costumes
Imagine eating spaghetti in public with that hat on. 🤣
Yeah, she should eat spaghetti in private.
Spaghetti was fancy and rare back then.
A lady doesn't "eat" spaghetti when on a date. She just pretends.
I don't think it was actual spaghetti.....I think it was an impasta.
a GEM of a movie,,,Merle Oberon at her best !!!she was so stunning and elegant and a very good actress,,,💜💗❤💯💯💘💘
Merle oberon's performance is beyond magnificent. It is hard to believe she is acting. How she can recall and recite all that dialog. It is like an encyclopedia but she is so real! This is one actress that no matter how good she is with the spoken word her sentiment and feeling are revealed to the fullest when she is NOT speaking. Brilliant.
lol. what?
All serious actors have to have good memories, or they wouldn’t be employable! Think of the Shakespearean actors and the 2+ hour plays that have to memorize, and nobody gets to edit out mistakes or even whole scenes as film actors can. In fact, every time the actors are seen from another direction in a film, that’s a new take, and one scene could take several days to get enough film, with clever editing to put the pieces into a smooth whole….so you may think Oberon has a phenomenal memory, but I’d only be sure of that if I had ever seen her in a lengthy play onstage!

How beautiful Merle Oberon was. She made another picture with Charles Korvin, called This Love of Ours. Claude Rains was also in it. Like this one, the plot was contrived, but Merle Oberon is so gorgeous nothing else matters.
Wow! What an awesome movie. It was a slow burn. I thought I had it all figured out ahead of time, but the ending took me completely off guard. They really knew how to make a movie back then. The crap that is cranked out today cannot compared w these jewels from back in the day. Thanks for the upload.
Same here!!
I don't get it. Did she really die in the end? or did they go away together and just told the police officer she died?
@@elizabethlamboy-wilson7335oh wow! I was completely accepting of story the doctor told. But you asked this brilliant question it is very possible. I could see him helped them get away for his friend’s sake and she just benefited from it🤔

Unfortunately, she is dead.
Besides, she didn’t know how to play golf, chess, or monopoly.
Her most famous performance is in the movie, "Withering Heights", where she plays "Cathy" and Lawrence Olivier plays "Heathcliff".......a moody and wonderful old classic written by Emile Bronte, one of the 3 Bronte sisters (all of them famous writers.} She is even younger and more beautiful in that one.

Fortunately, neither my wife nor I had read the reviews which were not too favourable when it was

absolutely superb, great actress and looks amazingly stunning (aided by an assemblage

Oberon must have been one of the most glamorous actresses to ever grace a film, I can only begin to

It's called class. We no longer feel obligated to put our best foot forward. We don't realize that feeling good about ourselves through fashion is an essential part of human contentment. And how we appear to each other is a good way to lift spirits.
This was a good movie. She had a good sense of worth and she used it. Even though she was vain about her beauty she was not mean. She was realistic about her beauty, she knew it would not last forever. I wish I had been that self knowing.
You're still beautiful.
Good sense of worth>? She used people to live a comfortable life without any thought of them. If you think that's commendaable....
@@iancastenetto671 Read what I wrote: "Even though she was vain about her beauty she was not mean. She was realistic about her beauty, she knew it would not last forever. " Looking good has monetary and social benefit. There is nothing wrong with cashing in on ones good looks.
"Beauty" is an inside job. For years I looked at younger pictures of myself and realized I always thought I was "too" something - fat, thin, wrinkly, old. Looking back, I was very attractive! It was all in my head. I wish I could keep remembering that. "Beauty" is also about attitude. Love yourself, love life, and you will look beautiful, always.

Merle Oberon is enchanting. Sometimes I ask myself why this world is so incredibly unfair. Some people are as beautiful as angels, while so many are not. Why couldn`t the creator make everyone beautiful, so people would pay more attention to the souls of others instead of their outer shells?

And as always he was right.
It takes the right upbringing and a mature personality to see beauty in all beings, not just the human ones, but so many stay immature and blind their whole life through.
Hmmm. Well we have roses and daisies, oaks and maples. And so among people, we have the plain and the pretty. Don’t over rate beauty. There is so much more to the person than what you may think about their looks. It can be a snare as much as it can be an asset. Education, art and career level the playing field for women. It is a mistake to rely only on the dress, the shell. Dresses go out of style, shells crack and outer beauty fades. Better to ask the Creator to Cultivate the soil that grows the person. This is a shallow, amoral woman. Her beauty does not ennoble her character. She is predatory. Her ugly attitudes, ignorant pronouncements, and deceit tarnish her looks. Her entire status comes from outside herself. That’s a depraved way to live. Read Madame Bovary. You may enjoy it.
