Unmasked (1950) Starring Raymond Burr, Hillary Brooke, and Barbara Fuller

- A sleazy newspaper publisher (Raymond Burr) murders his mistress (Hillary Brooke) and frames her husband for the crime. Will he get away with it or will an honest police detective (Robert Rockwell) untangle the web of lies and reveal the truth?
Raymond Burr--best known for playing the dogged defense attorney Perry Mason--spent the first part of his career playing villains of the worst kind. He plays one such character in this film, and he's reportedly excellent, looming large throughout both metaphorically and literally.

Raymond Burr played the homicidal heavies even better than the good guys he played later. Loved him in “The Blue Gardenia.” Definitely recommend.
And also REAR WINDOW!!!❤
Indubidubly 🙂
Yes! And His Kind of Woman! My 2 favs with him.
Raymond Burr's Eyes were made for NOIR - Fatalism, Soothing Malice. ... Female counterpart, Mary Windsor's Eyes.
Great day in the morning.
Grew up watching Raymond Burr, he's such a good actor no matter which "side" he's on! 👍🤗 Have to admit, he ages quite well too!
Figuratively and literally. He was as good in those Perry Mason movies from the 1980s and 1990s as he was in the original series.
@@SteveMillerTalks WHAT, HE PASSED AWAY IN 1973!!! AFTER HIM, THERE WAS/IS NO COMPARISON!!! MY ALLTIME FAVOURITE, IN ANY AND ALL OF HIS WORK!!! PEACE IN!!! 🕊🕊🕊
I TOO GREW UP WATCHING HIM, ESPECIALLY AS 'PERRY MASON'!!!
🥰🥰🥰
@@uncommonwoman100 Raymond Burr was still making movies in the 1990s... and was actively under contract to make Perry Mason movies. Three or four were in production when he passed away in 1993.
@@SteveMillerTalks MY APOLOGIES, HE DID PASS AWAY IN 1993 NOT 1973!!! 💪🏾💪🏾
I just LOVE Raymond Burr in anything! Especially Perry Mason! And to learn what a wonderful, generous person he was heartwarming!💗
Reportedly, he was nothing like the characters he played. Which is a good thing for the people who knew him!
His eyes make him perfect for the villain roles…btw have been binge watching all the Perry Mason episodes!
Time well spent! It's great TV!

I thought I had seen all these types of movies. I missed this one. Raymond Burr is excellent he plays a very dark character.❤
I knowwwww
There’s something like 5000 film noirs floating around.
Amazing how much drama & suspense they can cram into less than 60 minutes, yes ? How come they can't do that now ?
That is a very good question. It seems like everything is getting worse on the creative front... but I may have turned into a Cranky Old Man. (Although I don't think so...)
💰💰💰 DIFFERENT MORALS BACK THEN, OR AT LEAST THE BAD ONES WERE NOT SO MUCH PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE!!!
There are independent film makers who make short stories and aggregators that feature them. If you like sci-fi, DUST is a good place to start.
But, in the comments, there's always those simpletons who say "It needs to be longer!". IMO, longer just means more garbage just to extend the time.
@@TheWanderingFinnegan Interesting.
Thank You for the memories Raymond Burr. I grew up watching your mesmerizing performances, and whether you were the villain or the hero you stood out! There will never be another like him! I consider myself very fortunate to have lived in his era! RIP "Perry".
He was one of the greats!
Raymond Burr portrait ed Perry Mason before Iron side. 😊I always liked watching him.
Raymond burr was a terrific actor
Raymond Burr also played the murderer in Rear Window w James Stewart & Grace Kelly.
In a white wig, if memory serves.
And in Mara Maru with Errol Flynn and Ruth Roman.
B movie, but Burr is always great.

As I do when I take off my hat, you make a good point !
I enjoyed this. Back when movies were short and to the point. And ya gotta love that! 😂
My favorite thing about film noir is they set the plot in about ten minutes and tell the story in under ninety minutes. Great editing, no gratuitous love scenes, and no lengthy diatribes make for enjoyable films.
Raymond Burr Is An Outstanding Actor. He is Great In All Of His Roles!!!
True!
I heartily concur ! No matter the role, the late great Mr Burr would give it his all !!
Excellent film. Thank you for posting.
Glad you enjoyed it!
And to think this great bad guy actor was a rose gardener with his life partner. Love RB.
Yes he even named one of the varieties he raised for Della Street (unsure if it is named after her character role in Perry or her actual name, I will have to look that up.)

Never saw this one; Burr was a hard working actor and this dark character seemed to fit him yet he made Perry Mason an icon.
Great old movie it had every thing thank you ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Mason makes a good “heavy”😺
Yeah, it was Perfection in the early Perry Mason episodes where Mason was a whole variety of shady when it came to getting his clients off.
Indeed. In more ways than one !!
@@SteveMillerTalks As I do when I take off my hat, you make a GOOD POINT !
Awesome acting by Burr!
Right On !!
For me Raymond Burr voice and bedroom eyes makes the case, no one like him.
Oodles of thanks for sharing this bodacious "blast from the past" ! Being a huge fan of the late great Raymond Burr, I am quite surprised I had never heard of this 1950 Republic picture till YT recommended it to me. What a treat ! Greatly looking forward to watching it. The sound is poor but I'll gladly take what I can get.
I hope you find watching it a good use of your time!
@@SteveMillerTalks Thanks a bunch ! Appreciate your kind words.
Raymond Burr was a great actor but his greatest and most iconic role was ans is Perry Mason the unparalleled and unbeatable criminal lawyer who defends only innocents accused of crimes they didn't commit while having virtually all evidence pointing out at them, yet once the great Perry Mason comes in, all things change. Perry mason inspired almost all courtroom dramas.
You can tell Republic is on its last legs in this one but it's still got it where it counts in the acting and script department.
Actually, the studio produced feature films all the way up to 1958.
@@jubalcalif9100 indeed
I'm so glad I found this thank you!!
Hilary Brooke was a good actress. She has the Helen Vinson edge...the blonde version.
Indubitably. She was quite lovely & equally good in both comedic & dramatic roles.
Ya know how good he is from all the movies he was in before Mason so it is easy to believe
I absolutely loved the pretty feminine way women dressed back then! And Raymond was so very handsome at this time in my opinion!
But think about the undergarments and accessories: rigid bras; hot slips; girdles-or-you-weren't-properly-dressed even at home or in a casual dress; stockings & garter belts; waists as tight as could be; fashion gloves on a hot day; thin, femimine coats in the cold; uncomfortable shoes even in the home; granny panties ... hideous maternity tops, although rarely seen in movies. 😁 Fashion was designed for women with all the correct undergarments to be worn, especially in movies. No girdle, and your suit might not fit. It was serious torture, the evolution of the hard corset. Women dressed prettily but it came at a price. Even bathing suits had built-in girdles. 😁 Don't get me started on the clip-on earrings that weighed a pound each. 😅 I'm glad to have been born in this era.
Great film. Thanks for posting.
Canadian Burr was best remembered in his roll sat in a wheelchair in the Ironside tv series (1967-1975), I watched it on the BBC in the UK.
I've only ever seen the pilot episode of "Ironside"... I need to rectify that at some point!
@jacksugden8190....What Ramond Burr is best remembered for depends upon the age of the person. I am now 72 and I was a fan of Perry Mason before Burr made Ironside. Yes, I really liked Ironside; I thought Burr and the rest of the cast did a great job with Ironside. But I had known Perry Mason for so many years that it was hard to see him in a wheelchair and not want to yell at the T.V....."Perry Mason...just stand up...why don't you just stand up...???
Perhaps the BBC ion Britain didn't show Perry Mason much..??
It is odd, isn't it, how Burr was so well known as a "bad guy" for many years, and suddenly does a 180 degree turn and becomes one of the most famous defense lawyers on T.V....!!
We probably all have different touch-stones for old-timey actors, but Raymond Burr does equal Perry Mason in my mind, too.
Wrong. Burr is best remembered as Perry Mason, for which he won 2 Emmys.
Perry Mason best show on TV early 60s in Australia!
Raymond Burr, everybody's favorite villain burnished his reputation as a fat bad guy while honing his talents in films such as Desperate, Sleep My Love, Raw Deal, Pitfall, Abandoned, Red Light, His Kind of Woman, The Blue Gardenia & Crime of Passion. His Noirs include Walk A Crooked Mile, Borderline, Unmasked, The Whip Hand, FBI Girl, Rear Window, They Were So Young, A Cry in the Night, Affair in Havana, Meet Danny Wilson. As a bad guy, he played a crooked cop, a lousy husband & father who abandons his family, a jealous boyfriend/husband, a mob boss who tortures & threatens someone who refuses to be intimidated, a ruthless business owner who slaps the female help, a psychopath, etc. His portly physique made him guilty before he even displayed his talents as a dangerous, psychopathic perpetrator who will stop at nothing to get what he wants.
His real life, nice guy reputation suffered leading him to do Perry Mason, a lawyer, then Ironsides, a police detective. These two roles rehabilitated his career and enabled him to enjoy a career revival, working until his death.
I am going to have see which movies on that list I can get for the Screening Room. You've reminded me of some good ones! (Why didn't "Bride of the Gorilla" make your list, though... :D )
@@SteveMillerTalks I have never seen it; moreover, it's not as well known as the ones I mentioned. I think that Burr is creepy enough without playing opposite a gorilla. Horror/supernatural special effects detract from Burr's talents & intimidating portly physique. It's also a minor movie whose shock value has nothing to do with his much-in-demand acting skills.
It's also not all that good... I was trying to make a joke. :)
@@SteveMillerTalks O.K. Some jokes get lost in translation & require an audible sarcastic tone. Thanks for your comment & clarification.
so many interesting characters
This movie is a sequence of impossible-to-believe situations, starting with a Raymond Burr as a man who'd attract a Broadway star and a beautiful secretary. He always played the kind of man women ran away from.
That was some Un Perry Mason-like behavior.
It was his evil twin!

Raymond Burr strikes again!!! He's always a villain.
Not always, but during this phase of his film career he usually was.

I think Raymond burr was gorgeous ❤
People were much too trusting in those days. Not one asks for ID from a law enforcement officer? Have they never heard of burglar chains on doors? The locks looked flimsy, and the door wasn't too sturdy either. Maybe l shouldn't judge by today's standards, but l wouldn't go "downtown" with anyone unless they show me official paperwork, like a warrant.

Great movie, but volume is not balanced; left hear low, right ear is louder. Also hearing some sort of talking in background like a TV playing while movie playing coming thru right ear only w/earbuds on. So annoying that I had to remove the left plug from ear. Nevertheless, I enjoyed this masterpiece starring one of my all-time favorite actors, Mr. Raymond Burr. Haven't seen anything yet that I didn't love him in, and I still watch & enjoy episodes of Perry Mason. Thanks so much for the upload!
Odd... I will have to crank the volume really loud one of these evenings. As far as the balanced thing, I never noticed. I will try watching with headphones as well. Not sure how to trouble-shoot the audio, but I'll see if I can do anything. Thanks for the feedback/information!
