My goodness, I've seen a lot of sweet old movies, but this isn't one of them. I found it as sweet as sour milk.
I wasn't convinced by any of the easy resolutions and sudden changes of heart left and right. It was as heartwarming as, "Oh, well, since this is how things are, guess we'd better resign ourselves to the circumstances and make the best of them."
I suppose, though, compared with the movies of today, almost anything might look sweet in comparison.

I loved the 30s portrayal of a single father. Most films back in the day, if they depicted single parenthood, the focus was always on the mother. This was unique in that respect. And my, he was a sweet dad! 😄 An all around enjoyable film with likeable characters.

Donald Cook didn't disappoint in this film. I've seen him in earlier and later movies, and he always comes across well. Erin O'Brien-Moore plays a character strongly similar to 'Freda' in 'Dangerous Corner', 1936, and is coldly selfish and shallow. Douglas Fowley is seen in a role showing his versatility. And Ann Doran comes across as the girl any healthy man would want. Considering that this is by Chesterfield Studios, a 'poverty row' outfit, the plot, settings, and video quality are surprisingly good.

Reminded me of Gone With The Wind, how there is one miscommunication right after another. All because people don't have the courage to say what they mean and mean what they say.
Do not assume that your lover has any idea what you are talking about because they almost certainly see things very differently than you do. So spell out your point of view very exactly, and don't leave out any key details. Just be as kind as you can, your goal is to improve things, not end them.
BTW, the book, Gone With The Wind, was published the same year this movie was released.

This was a Great movie to watch, enjoy! A quite good" rendition" of what life was like during the Depression era! I read, and was told, people were selling apples on the streets, waiting in long lines to get something to eat from the soup kitchens. Also, remember reading in history class regarding " Hooverville" where people set up tents to have a place to live, during the Depression, which" hit" in USA,on October 29, 1929 and lasted through the mid-late 30's depending on which news source, one researches.Wealthy, that lost all their money during stock market crash, were the people who were jumping out of high story buildings, not the poor people, for they did not have anything to lose.A Very, very sad time, and no one would want to" experience" that, now, especially, since Trump bragged about having USA be bankrupt, and country can" start over" again. Not ever a sane economic state,to become" bankrupt" if Trump wants that for himself, that is his decision, but definite Not for USA.

When it started, the plot reminded me of Henry James' The Golden Bowl... But there is something about the 1936 society in which a woman can't win a man, the tables have to be reversed and the man has to win the woman... I did not like that only because it would have been much more interesting, and against the current day expectations if it continued on the path that Maggie (in the Golden Bowl) who is similar to Gloria took at the start of the marriage, only to change suddenly after the tabloid story, which I'm sure hurt her terribly... Still, despite feeling hurt, such a sudden personality change, seemed strange...I took it as a plot device to maintain the status quo gender roles of 1936...Anything that's predictable is less interesting than the unexpected, but from today's perspective, a man taking care of a woman is unexpected, so it I can pretend this film was made today than the ending is surprising indeed :) That is what I like about black and white romantic films... There is emotion, and love is not robotic, or expected... Falling in love is unpredictable... Such as the blond girl and her musician husband... He was right, it could have been that she was on the rebound....and the fact that he cared enough to consider it already shows a man who can feel and think... Sometimes I think that today's dating rituals, lack anticipation, and are so methodical it frightens me... Without the excitement of the anticipation, how can love develop and grow? I think this is what I love most about romantic black and white films. None of them are calculated, people do not fall in love like robots. They have feelings, and are deeply hurt...
