Tesla powered Volkswagen Golf GTI gets put through its paces. Is it still a GTI? It's up for debate

- PPC's Will Holman gets behind the wheel of Andy's electric converted Mk2 Golf GTI. Whilst at first glance it looks very standard, underneath it's anything but. Has he ruined a perfectly good classic hot hatch? That's a matter of opinion.

This kind of thing is what I loved PPC Mag for. A radial engine in a Mini, Audi 5 pot in a 944, rear mount turbo on a 205... They all have the same appeal as this does to me. Someone following their own path with a build is what it was all about IMO. Glad to see the videos are in the same vein.
Appreciate the comment, Robin. Thank you 👍
Wether you like EV's or not there's some proper thought and engineering gone into this Lockdown project. I'm always impressed with backyard builds
This is brilliant. It is NOT 'destroying' a classic. It can be put back to petrol. Banger racing, destruction derbys etc are the ones that destroy cars.
I used to be a big viewer of Fully Charged. When it first started they'd have odd and interesting electric vehicles made in sheds or at universities. Now it's become a new car magazine type show and I really miss watching people doing home conversions so this video is 10/10 from me. I'm slowly building an electric 3 wheeler and one day will convert my kit car to electric.
Steam, petrol, diesel, electric, compressed air, hydrogen, methane, LPG... they're all good.
Appreciate you taking the time to write this. Absolutely - we're petrolheads through and through here but always open to exploring what's out there in other forms 🙂
Great effort. Some silly bastards in the comments whining about their petrol god being offended. There’s certainly no soul in an EV and lithium is a questionable solution to the problem presented by the current narrative, but they engineered this themselves with sympathy for the Golf as a lockdown project.
Not my kind of thing but impressed that it works so well and is nicely engineered.
“Why does the brake pedal go to the floor?” 😂😂
You need to include the next part where the owner patiently says 'That's the accelerator pedal" 😂
Probably the best example you could have used, glad you didn’t do this to an immaculate GTI. Interesting that you didn’t go for more batteries to extend the range and offer more performance.
Not for me but a very well thought out execution of this conversion.
Cool! Not exactly the first ev converted car, but it's built at home and they did think about weight distribution and the cars original feel, and that I thought was the most interesting part. Really hope there's some future for EV's with some PPC-thrill/character 🙂
Great episode this. Im bunging the same electric motor into a '69 Karmann Ghia and expect similar performance and range. It was a rusty horror, rhd conversion, etc, so not one for the purists anyway. Well done PPC!
Sounds like a fun one! Best of luck with it 😎
Great job. I hope affordable plug and play diy kits become more common in the future.
Please record the audio with higher volume, especially outside. Thank you.
Love the ingenuity and imagination used to create this. Hats off to the chaps responsible 👏🏼 By the sounds of it they saved a MK2 Golf that was going no where but the scrap heap as well, so more brownie points for that 👏🏼 Sounds crazy but if I ever have the money I'd love to convert my Berlingo van to EV. Lots of sensible reasons why I'd like to do it, but I also rather like the idea of having a "one off" Berlingo/EV sleeper 😆
Spectacular, thankyou - the abilities of some home builders always amazes me .....
I've made the time to watch it all the way through now, and I have to thank you Will, for having the openness of mind to film this, with well-considered questions, and a thorough appraisal of some excellent carbuilding skills. I'm as impressed with you and the PPC team as I am with ALL the incredible project cars you brint to us. Thankyou.
Nice bit of variety. If it's homemade it deserves to be here!
Not for me
, but each to their own I guess,
EVs are not our usual thing. We're more into internal combustion 😁 But it was an interesting project to discover and share with everyone so why not eh!
@@ppcmagazine The large model S motor will fit in the Golf 3 which is based on the golf 2 so should fit in there too.. There is a hill climb golf 4 or 5 with the large Tesla drive unit in it in Europe....
I did sit and watch the entire episode EVs are of no interest to myself but good on them for having a go would just prefer a petrol engine in it 👍
Love it! Would have preferred to see it with the Tesla motor as well though, but i guess that would be a lot more work
What an amazing piece of engineering!
Bloody great isn't it! 😁
Still registered as a petrol and really should be the subject of a BIVA - The sort of vehicle conversion that will eventually create issues for our hobby. Do it right or hide it from sight.
Tedious.
If the shell hasn't been significantly modified and it's all bolted in, then it can keep it's original registration and doesn't need BIVA, just needs it changing from petrol
This doesn't need to be subject to BIVA.
People like the OP are the real reason people don't want to bother.
Not my thing converting classics into ev’s , a golf isn’t too bad, but classic 911’s E types Etc is sacrilege 🤦🏻♂️ and once the novelty of acceleration has worn off what are you left with 🤷🏻♂️
Quality. Love an interesting build.
But it a milk float
150volts that'll take you 3miles on a good Day 😊
Amazing engineering to make it all work but something inherently wrong with doing that to a Golf GTI, sorry. The engine noise and gearbox are two of the parts that make the Golf GTi such a great drivers car. This is a bit too much like a milkfloat from back in the day!
Converting to E might be the only way to keep classics usable/affordable beyond 10+ years if petrol or its replacement is only available in low volume. Also surely fully utilising that 5 speed gearbox would improve the range?
Interesting confirmation.... The Tesla is "well made" and the Golf is the same weight.... So all the EV haters who keep saying Tesla is rubbish and EVs are heavy. They are indeed talking nonsense.
So he's used less than half the Tesla, it takes between 1/4 to nearly half a day to refuel compared to 10 mins & has a 1/3 of the range on a good day ( I presume one up) & that's progress! Na I stick to LPG or get a hydrogen one.
Oh & road tax isn't free anymore nor is congestion charge.
@craigwalker4211 Blah blah blah.... I have daft mates at work like you.... think they know everything and don't have a single clue where the latest technology is.... Sad really. Million mile warranties and 300 miles charge in 10 minutes. But no problem, enjoy your cars.... whatever you drive. It's a free world.
Thanks for your unbiased reply I work with people like you too.
What is this fantastic car car that has a full charge in 10 mins with a 300 mile range?
I know someone who's been working for 10years in electric vehicle development who could teach you a thing or two about them & there limitations ,but obviously your vast knowledge on this subject is far superior like your attitude .
Keep enjoying your priuis
Will ask the builder what's the range & how long does it take to charge,
His reply 130 miles I built it to get to my brother's 116 miles away to full recharge depending on method between 5 to 10 hours.
A petrol version would take approx 10 mins to fully fill the tank with a range of circa 300 miles.
@craigwalker4211 I agree that a diesel we have takes 20 to 30mins to drive and fill up and does 500 miles. It does of course cost £70 to fill. The wife's EV fills up while we are in bed sleeping, but most importantly it costs £4 and she drives it all week for that £4. There are advantages to both vehicles. It important to know what you need. This guy needs to bomb about and sometimes drive to his brother. Similar for most people with a motorbike. He built it for his needs. The original Tesla would be quite different.
Not for me this, I am triggered by ev conversions....
Not our thing generally either 😁 Petrolheads through and through but we wanted to see what this was all about. Back to regular programming shortly!
@@ppcmagazine Back in May 1990, Mercedes revealed a fully electric 190 E at the Hanover Fair.
The Geneva show car featured two DC permanent magnet motors, one for each rear wheel, with a combined peak power output of 44 HP. The Mercedes 190 E Electro used a sodium-nickel chloride battery and a regenerative braking system to help charge the pack during driving.
@@ppcmagazine Volkswagen actually built its first electric hatchback way back in 1976,
Mk1 Golf landed, and within two years of its introduction VW engineers had turned a few they had laying around into rudimentary EVs. Eventually in 1981 it launched the CityStromer (‘strom’ is German for electricity) - an all-electric Mk1 Golf built in collaboration with German utility company RWE. Second- and third-generation CityStromers landed in 1985 and 1993 respectively.
Volkswagen has been doing electric cars since the early Seventies. Its first was a T2 Transporter with a whopping 850kg lead-acid battery pack, between 30 and 50 miles of range and a 22bhp motor for 0-30mph (its top speed was only 46mph…) in a dizzying 12 seconds.
What a shame... Put the engine back in.
Common will this is real life not scalextric let's stick to real cars.
No hand throttles or grooves in the road here.
No
It's definitely an acquired taste. Next week we'll be back to regular, petrol powered internal combustion service 🤣
Yes.
*Just NO*
Yesssss.
No way pedro
Destroying classics is NOT my thing. Unsubbed
And they say nurses have it tough
What a fanny 😅 I don’t like EVs but imagine unsubbing for this
Not an ev man myself but same weight same power but no road tax
Lol, wasn't actually ' destroyed ', now was it. Snowing I reckon.😂
Did you even watch it? The Golf was trash. It’s not a classic.
