- Tiff back on track in a Sierra RS500 Cosworth Touring Car (old Top Gear spec). In this special episode Jonny Smith arranges for Tiff Needell to return to an iconic 1989 episode of Top Gear, where he tested an RS500 Cosworth Sierra against his Group A Labatts race car - the car he won with at Donington in 1989. This is the original, unrestored sister car to Tiffs (Tim Harvey) and we let him loose on track in what is now a £475,000 touring car. Jonny and Tiff used to work together on TV show Fifth Gear.

Jonny... This episode and the last one have been just new levels of fabulousness. They've been the pinnacle of story telling, production and nostalgia. The car culture represented in these last two has changed beyond recognition, but the passion is absolutely familiar. So some nostalgic dewy eyed-ness at things past, and some hope for the future of motoring. It's genuinely moved me and I'm sure many others. CMTMB
Last year I had the great pleasure of being driven around Croft Circuit in an BMW M2 for many laps. What a gentleman Tiff is, what a driver, he absolutely thrashed that car around the track yet always in complete control even when the back end drifting out.
Great video, well done for setting it up and we'll done Tiff.
Who doesn't love Tiff,
One of your best episodes yet
Thank you. Has been really exciting to get Tiff onto the channel finally.
@@TheLateBrakeShow ... for a man of 72 years old he clearly keeps in shape. Great episode. Classic touring cars are the best.
I don't most boring presenter ever
Great to see tiff again , tears of joy
@@zensamurai6582 🤡
I thought Johnny was taking the piss saying Tiff was in his 70s, he’s bloody 72 years old. What a guy Tiff is, great seeing him back in an RS. Well done Johnny for sorting this.
I had to Google it to check too 😂
Agreed. I was shocked. We all love Tiff ❤️
Same here, i still had the tiff needell of Fifth Gear in my mind lol. 72 or not, he's still not affraid to send it!
This is what passion is. Both of you were beaming and you can tell it's genuine. It's why i love this channel.
The absolute best banter. What a pair. Probably my new favourite episode!
Better than any Fifth Gear.
Watching and listening to Tiff drive that car instantly catapulted me back to a kid in the 90s Sitting with my dad watching touring car.. Amazing content!
I miss the days of Tiff terrifying everyone during the Fifth Gear team tests, it's great to see he's still as bonkers as ever.
I feel it's a word that gets used far too much these days, but Tiff is such a legend. Great work as ever, Jonny
Tiff really is British car institution.
@@TheLateBrakeShowyou both are!
Tiff in the Sierra Cosworth is what ignited my love of SIerra's when I was 8 years old. I begged my dad to buy one , he did and loved it so much he owed about 10 over years from mk1's mk2's and Saphs so this video means so much to me. Thanks a lot Jonny for making this happen. I feel like going into the garage to sit in my MK1 and think about my late father now
Nice story and sounds like a great dad. Nice driving weather for your lovely car, have a great week.
As a man of a certain age, hearing Tiff narrate a lap or two takes me back to a better time.
That was some top reporting. Loved the bit.
Tiff Needell and Chris Harris still remain as the best in the business when it comes to car reviews IMO. Unlike the vast majority, they have legit racing chops, especially Tiff. They talk about the cars from a perspective others can't! Thank you for making this video happen!
Have you ever listened to the Tiff and Chris episode on the Collecting Cars podcast ? If not I highly recommend!
Chris Harris is overly dramatic
I agree those are the best , and Harry Catchpole and Jason Carisma
Don't forget Steve Sutcliffe and Dickie Meadon!
And Jethro Bovington
True story...I met Tiff in Universal Studios in Florida 30 years ago? He was an absolute gentleman. He asked what I drove.....omg.....at that time I ran a BMW e30 M3? Evo2 # 249/501.....I then couldn't get away from him. Such a lovely man. 😊 7:02
no daft music, no over the top editing. just tiff going round a track that he knows like the back of his hand, seeing every move he does with the VHS filter on it like the original race. what a video. perfect.
This has won the internet today. Thank you 👏👏👏
Wonderful! Thanks to everyone for making it happen.
100%
Tiff should be back on TV. He’s a great personality and was a great inspiration when I was growing up.
He's got a show on amazon called Love Cars 'on the road'
Love Tiff, great to see you guys back together, disappointed that it was too warm for a Skoda rally jacket 😉
Tiff is a legend, I'd have no idea he was in his 70s! He looks great, drives incredibly and probably presents better than ever! His passion and energy has always been infectious, it's so nice to see you both on screen together again.
Tiff, ahh such a legend and what you get on camera is exactly what you get off camera. His enthusiasm has never dwindled as many who've traversed Thruxton side ways with him will attest to, whilst he single handedly keeps tyre suppliers in business.
Tiff Needell - A man living out the ultimate dream life, the enthusiasm, the passion, the joy and connection to everything between the gloves and the track! You might be one of my idols for this! 👌
Fantastic! Thanks Jonny and Tiff and film crew. And thanks to the wonderful owner of this car for letting it out to stretch its legs.
I suspect the owner is thrilled! Not only have they collected and preserved the car driven by Tim Harvey, but now they have this video showing Tiff driving the car too! It really adds to the story attached to the car!
@@Graham_WidemanTim drove the car last year at the Super Touring event at Brands Hatch along with his race engineer from Andy Rouse Engineering
How good is it to see Tiff and hear his voice.
Tiff has always been a bubbly character and fun to watch! Good man Jonny for organizing a special moment for him.
Uncle Drift, what a bloke. As much as my uncle fueled my love of cars, there is a small part of me that wishes he was a peddler too like Tiff. Brilliant episode Jonny, as always.
This made me smile so much . Watching tiff was like I was driving the car my self . We need more of tiff Johnny
Absolute legend we don't see enough of Tiff, you can hear the emotion in his voice as he's driving. You make the best content Johnny!!!
Last time I saw Tiff, he was taking a pee next to me at Thruxton a few weeks ago. He was very friendly and polite 😂
Tiff Vista!
Did you cross the streams? I hope so!
@@CRFLAus 🤣
Tiff always brings a smile. I real living legend
You need to get Tiff on the chairs for an Idol Chat, he's going to have so many stories to tell!
I'm not a Ford fan but do know how special the RS500 race cars were so to see one be driven in anger is a delight. Kudos to the owner for letting go out and be properly driven by a 70+ year old. It was built to be driven hard, not kept in a museum.
Hi Jonny. The rapport between you and Tiff is wonderful to see! I have a lot of time for that man, 72 and still the master. Cheers. Leigh.
Tiff’s enthusiasm is always unmatched. Great viewing. Fantastic car.
Tiff Needell and the Sierra Cosworth reunited, takes me right back... it's impossible not to smile. 🤩I watched that episode of TG many times, so many years ago.
From the editing, to the banter and, of course, the onboard footage. 👌That was an amazing episode, thank you! 🙏
Love the editing on this - excellent! Nice to see Brands Hatch as it used to be. I was a pitlane marshal there for several BTCC weekends and met Tiff a lot, especially when he drove the Nissan Primera. I especially remember Andy Rouse in his RS500 and how tiring it was driving these cars. Oh, and I beat Jan Lammers and Ricard Rydell in a straight race in golf carts, through the tunnel to the paddock, cheered on by David Leslie and his wife. Happy days!
Oh man this takes me back. An era when I used to drive from time to time for a car dealer I drove a few Cozzies and they were epic. I didn't get paid but I got to drive cars that I could never afford. I think I may have even seen this race. Wow I feel old. Tiff looked like a kid with two jellies and he's lost none of that enthusiasm. Many thanks for sharing.
Incredible video! You can see Tiff's excitement and emotion at this reunion, and even better is that he has the driving and presenting skill to really convey how meaningful this is. Thanks for putting this together!
Wow. This video was a pure joy to watch! I remember that original Top Gear episode and to see Tiff drive the sister car to the one he race in all these years later was super. He’s got something so special and it was lovely to see your banter.
Well done on this video. Definitely one of your best and I would recommend anyone to watch this. ❤
I get emotional watching Tiff get emotional! Watching Tiff get re-united with a bit of memorable history makes one hell of a genuine watch. Well done Jonny. Be nice to see more of Tiff or even an interview.
I don`t usually comment on the videos but I`ve met Tiff on a handfull of occasions and he is one of the nicest blokes in motorsport. A boring story is when Labatts came to the UK before sponsoring the touring cars they drove through my village of Henley in Arden and saw the Ford sign so stopped and ordered some Sierra`s which we used to service for them. At Christmas they delivered some boxes and several cases of beer. In the boxes were jackets, Tshirts etc all for us at the garage to say thank you. I later went onto mechanic for a local race team and some of our meetings were with the touring cars as support races. Tiff always said hello and I remember asking Andy Rouse if I could sit on his table to eat as there was no room. Tin top drivers are so different to single seaters. Watching this and listening to him relive those moments brought an actual tear to my eye. So many happy memories of that era. Thanks Jonny you`ve made my year.
Sounds like an amazing time 🤝, treasure the memories 👍
Genuinely felt quite emotional watching this. Thank u all evolved 😎🙏👍✌
This video put a very big smile on my face. Thanks for the awesome content Jonny! Loved seeing Tiff completely in his element. Wouldn't mind another appearance in the future. LOVE IT! 😁
I have no idea who this guy is, or about those races but his excitement about his memories and reliving those moments almost made me cry.
You need to google him, he’s a proper ace bloke.
Watch his Top Gear Supercar program where he drives all of the contemporary (80s and 90s) supercars and gives his honest opinion about them - textbook stuff. His review of the Jaguar 220 is one of my all time favorites.
Google tiff ford puma top gear car of the year
Then the BBC cancelled the show and they went to Channel 5.
It is what really started the “new” top gear. Ok it’s cancelled again, the BBC don’t like cars…
Fantastic work Jonny
I pity you! 😂
The two best presenters. Love Tiff!
That Tim Harvey RS500 ... those were the glory days of the BTCC. Nicely put together video.
Ruddy brilliant as usual. I think the only thing that could possibly top this would be Tiff hammering a Silkolene 6R4 around the Brands Rallycross circuit.
Or perhaps a Janspeed Nissan Primera Touring car 😀
Amen to the 6R4 👌
Best Driver... Best Host.... Best Car. Thank you gentlemen, with love from America as it falls.
My god, Tiff and Sir JS again.
Tiff holds such a special place in my heart. Coming from a family who never owned (London) car until I was 15, Tiff got me into cars and had been my idol since I was 12 (1992) and is the reason I have such a passion for cars
One of the best so far. More of this, please.
Thanks! We will try.
Definitely more Tiff on the channel please! One of your best videos yet 👍🏻
Tiff Needell is a vibrant 70s man! We should all have that exuberance for life and it's intoxicating to say the least. Great job ,Jonny, for showing us a fantastic racing machine and the car he drove.
A legendary car and a legendary driver! How on earth is Tiff in his 70s?!? How on earth is the Sierra Cosworth nearly 40 years old?!? Thanks for making ME feel old Jonny!!! Fantastic video as always. TLBS continues to be one of the best channels on CZcams 🙂
Watched the 1989 Top Gear video many times on CZcams. Amazing to see them both reunited, after so much has changed.
Tiff's such a great bloke. That wave to the marshals on his way out of the pits says it all. Fantastic upload Jonny & co :)
What a great coincidence, just this afternoon i was watching Tiff's original Top Gear piece about the Sierra Cosworth BTCC car on some random CZcams video about the history of Top Gear. And only an hour ago I was catching up on last weeks BTCC rounds at Oulton Park, with of course Tim Harvey being one of the presenters. And then this video awaits me when I switch back to CZcams. Just magical seeing Tiff re-united with a car he raced against (and won), and he most certainly was not driving a parade lap, he was giving it some. Well done Jonny for arranging this, a truly amazing and most enjoyable video to watch.
Fantastic to see Tiff out doing what Tiff does best.....Entertaining everyone with his sharp wit and superb driving skills. Tiff, you are and always will be a total legend in the motoring world. Thank you Jonny for bring Tiff out of retirement to give us all much needed trip down memory lane.
Excellent content, young Mr Smith, Thank You. Utter respect to Tiff, a PROPER Top Gear presenter. Bizarrely, my "Take Away" from the video is the huge rear overhang behind the rear axle on the Sierra. I guess I'm enjoying the shorter rear overhang on modern EVs more, these days. And as you said, a big thank you to the companies that enabled you to provide us humble folks with some great entertainment!
Top ' Woolarding' on the Thumbnail!!! proper Old skool top gear. God that takes me back to being a kid and watching the epic Group A Btcc Races on Granstand with the legend that was Murray Walker commentating. Gonna have to go watch the 89 Birmingham superprix support race now. THat race was just none stop action.
Thank you for Jonny , Tiff and everyone else who made this happen!!!!
I'll freely admit I got a little teary eyed at this one. Fantastic to see Tiff on the channel, what a legend. Thanks Jonny for sorting this!
This gave me goosebumps the moment Tiff switched into presenter mode behind the wheel. Mega! I grew up watching Touring Cars on TV with my dad, I used to get the Season Review VHS every year and would watch them over and over and over again, I remember the '89 race at Donington!
That was epic, a nostaligic trip for us as well the OG Tiff!! He's still got it both in presenting and driving - really enjoyable, I was grinning the whole way through. Another fantastic episode Jonny and what a cameo!
Brilliant. Simply brilliant. Thank you Jonny, and thank you Tiff!
I've got to say Jonny, this was fantastic, getting the king of TV drifting back in the Cossie was a highlight of the weekend, it brought back so many memories. And filming was spot on, a massive pat on the back for Phil
Thank you. Yes, Phil is the one who tied it all together so well with the filming and edit.
Tiff wasn't the only one with a tear in his eye EPIC video thanks Johnny and Tiff I watched that race as a 10 year old boy back in 89 ❤
Oh my god … Tiff hasn’t aged … legend as a driver , legend as a presenter … thanks JS
Flipping heck it's Tiff!
When you see that helmet (No I'm not talking about Jonny...) you know its going to be good. The original king of TV drift, how much of the modern car media world was pioneered by Tiff! 💪🏼
Best episode for ages. Love Tiff. One of the defining voices (alongside Murray) of my childhood car watching youth. He's still got it!
thank you Jonny for making such intimate and detailed videos. top stuff !
Pure gold from both of you - thank you.
What a film! Genuinely got a bit emotional. I really miss those days. Awesome job you guys. Just awesome.
What an absolute delight to watch. Tiff and Jonny are great individually, but together, they're a joy to watch. The car's pretty epic too.
Great, thanks Jonny and Tiff, nice to watch the cossie go round! Great trailer too! 🎉👏
Class! Top work as usual Johnny, great to see you reunited with Tiff, what a car! ❤
Glorious. Who doesn't love a bit of Tiff and Jonny.
Jonny, I became a fan from your days with 5th Gear and Tiff and Vicki and Jason - now watching this and Tiff and you two talking like it was yesterday and seeing Tiff getting stirred up during his lap. Amazing. I've been kinda secretly hoping you would find a reason to reunite with Tiff and do something together and I check in on Sunday to see what you're up to and THIS? I got a tear in my eye for a moment. Love the LBS, Love the Barn Finds and Car Caves - THANK YOU! If you get Jeremy and Tiff back together..........well, looking forward to your next adventure!
Good to see Tiff back on a screen and in good form. You pair need to do some more stuff - grab Plato if he’s about as well.
That was bloody brilliant.
Proper Smile-On-Face brilliant.
Tiff is on CZcams, he still reviews cars and has a podcast channel
'We're going to roll...'
#ifyouknowyouknow
Fantastic. Just fantastic. tiff really knows how to do both jobs, live commentary on a hot lap driving the wheels off an epic car.
This was wonderful, Tiff has still got it. Thanks Jonny for another excellent video.
Excellent Woolarding
😂
Thank you, Johnny. Thank you, Tiff. Absolutely perfect! Is there any chance of an idol chat?
Idol chat with Tiff would be pure gold!
Thanks for this Jonny. Tiff is one of the biggest influences on me learning to love cars so much growing up. An absolute master behind the wheel and an incredible way with words - all the while going sideways.
Honourable mentions also to Clarkson, Willson, VBH et al.
Tiff Needell, what a boy. Still full of enthusiasm, talks as fast as he drives. Very enjoyable video, again.
The enthusiasm of Tiff is just brilliant. He's a great peddler too. Hard to believe he's in his 70s. Absolute legend.
Watching these two very dear friends talk, joke and tease each other was equally as much fun as watching Mr Needell drive the Ford. Listening to him relive driving the sister car to the one he drove was amazing. Listening to the joy in his voice. Priceless. Well done Mr Smith. 10 of 10.
Such nostalgia. Absolutely superb video. As an aside, Jonny, I don't think any of your subscribers would be upset if you did more content with the Legend that is Tiff, or indeed any of your other, previous co-presenters.
I've just bought my little boy a painting of this car for his bedroom. And we watched the video together in amazement. Thanks guys thoroughly enjoyed that
Fricking epic episode. So lovely to get Tiff back in "his" car. I loved every second of this video.
Can’t believe Tiff in his 70’s and still the same guy I remember watching in the 90’s, what a star. Only disappointing part was the lack of woollarding so teasingly presented in the thumbnail for the vid. Loved it though and who better to show off the mighty Cossie.
Love this episode! Actually felt the hairs on my neck go up watching Captain Carpaccio in that car again and seeing how much it clearly meant to him. Tiff is absolutely an influencer, has been since influencing ever became a thing. I used to love watching you guys together on 5th Gear and your chemistry really came through in this episode! It would be a crime if an Idol Chat isnt in the pipeline.. As for that Cosseh, all I can say is "Find another"! Keep up the good work Jonny, always look forward to late brake content!
Great to be able to put all those elements together. Tiff and the Cossie have both lasted well.
Tiff's right, he sold me my BMWs because I remembered the videos of him drifting them all the time. Legend. Great vid.
Loved this Johnny felt really emotional seeing this as a 49yr old this was my era from the 4 classes to the one class .... and TG covering this with Tony Mason ... thx Tiff and Johnny xx
What a video.
Two of the most modest, honest, passionate people in the car industry.
Tiff talking about Johnny being an influencer.
Tiff was a proper influencer.
I started watching Top Gear because of Tiff.
At a tad older than 70, what a man.
Well done Johnny...loved every second.
Listening to Tiffs commentary in the car had me misty eyed. This was one of the best episodes this channel has produced. What an amazing car and equally amazing driver.
21 minutes of pure bliss, even the paid placement was enjoyable to watch. Well done to the Latex Brogue Show team!
It's impossible to not like Tiff, great driver and presenter, has a good sense of humour and doesn't take himself too seriously. You wouldn't think he was in his 70's
Tiff is a Legend! A proper TV icon, his enthusiasm is just infectious. More Tiff content please Johnny! 😁👍
Loved it, Tiff in his 70's bloody hell im getting old, remember the TG episode. Great vid 👍
THAT WAS AWESOME! Tiff is the MAN his passion and enthusiasm for cars is second to none. More Tiff
What an absolute legend. Met him once at Goodwood Festival of Speed and he was an absolute gentleman/legend. Talking away with us, one of the highlights of the weekend. Excellent video as always Johnny.
What a legend, he's still got it! 👍
Just when you think the LBS can’t get any better, Jonny goes and does a stormer!! Great to see Tiff in front of a camera again… MORE!! Thanks Jonny! 🎉🎉🎉❤
