Rooney was Englands star player at 17/18 and star of Euro 2004 during the so called golden generation before he even joined Utd. He couldnt even get in the England team by the end with the worst England squad in decades. Rooney scored a hatrick on his debut in the Champions League for Utd and then it was slowly down hill from there. Rooney was better than Ronaldo and Messi at 18 before he went to Utd then they left him behind. Man Utd ruined Rooney playing him out of position and coaching his aggression out of him and the ability to run at players like he did at Everton. Rooney was a shadow of his former self when he returned to Everton after 13 years at Man Utd.
Scored more goals in less games in his Everton return. And became top scorer for United and England. UCL and Europa winner, 5x prem winner. We got the absolute best out of him until about 28. U sour Everton fan.

And then i watched his career at Man Utd and so i am in a position to say that Rooney lost his edge at Utd. He was good his first couple of seasons and maybe the season when Moyes took over at Utd, as Moyes tried to get him to play the way he did under him at Everton and breathed some confidence and belief in him.
Rooney scored more goals in less games the second time around because he was the penalty taker and also because Everton were a much superior team compared to when he left as an 18 year old. Everton were in relegation battles finishing in the bottom 14 regularly when Rooney came through for Everton as a 16/17 year old but when he returned Everton were regularly finishing in the top 8.
So what if he became Uniteds top scorer, so he should considering he was a striker and spent his career from an 18 year old at Utd and was considered England best player of his generation. Any striker who spends more than a decade at a club should be breaking the teams top goal scoring record if they are half decent. Even Lampard who was a midfielder broke Chelseas record goal scoring record.
Bobby Charlton was a midfielder, Rooney should have been beating Charltons England and Utd records by miles. The fact is he is miles behind the amount of goals Messi and Ronaldo scored and Rooney was better than both of them when he was at Everton and his first couple of seasons. At Utd until his performances dropped off. Rooney couldnt even break Shearers goal scoring record and Rooney was a far superior player.
Face facts Rooney was already Englands best player and probably the best player at Euro 2004 before he even went to United. He was top goal scorer and was player of the tournament at 15 at the under 17s Euros, all while at Everton, he was destined for great things long before he joined United but never hit the heights of what he should like Messi and Ronaldo or even Shearer for that matter which is a huge disappointment. End of story.
Lukaku is clearly world class and any team would start him.
