Thank you so much for half a million subscribers. I hope this video strikes a balance between helpful and entertaining. I encourage everyone with the faintest interest in animation to try out this process, it's really fun and unique. It's okay to steal my style outright, imitation is flattery and the greatest jumping off point for finding your own style. Links in the description to everything you'll need! Much love

It is very rare these days that patrons pay you for anything you are yet to create. The only ones that do those are museums and galleries, and most of the time, only for established artists who can sell anything due to their names.
Artists outside that category are starving, so they'd have to keep grinding to produce art for tge consumers to earn a living. I'm talking digital artists, animators, mangaka, portrait artists, etc.

But more in line with Joels theorem for art. Doesn't music exist to be heard? And if you are someone who dreams of creating music, in some form, by some method. Then shouldn't the barrier to entry be as low as we can make it?
The argument is hardly that art should be devalued to the point it should be free, but more that the world should be a place full of art. And if you are someone who wants to create art (for profit, or pleasure, or acclaim, etc) then you should be able to do so.

Although I totally agree, it still has some insignificant negative impact on his work. Take some of the secret fastfood recipes. People would be able to copy and recreate them, which in itself doesn't really have any impact on the flavour of these secret recipes, in fact, it's the opposite. Giving people the opportunity to improve, upgrade, alter art styles through inspiration such as this channel, will make the "flavour" significantly better as we will be getting more "recipes" of such type, where some may be potentially far more "tasty".
But, the insignificant negative impact is that it as a result makes his work less unique. Now, in my opinion, I like when the stuff I watch is unique. I enjoy a wide disparity between the kinds of content that gets recommended to me. Unfortunately, this is difficult to do when so many people spam the same things. I made the mistake with reddit-reading videos. I fixed my recommended now, but for a few weeks it was pretty annoying. The risk of poor-quality content becomes greater the more people try it, which as a result makes it harder to find the best of the best creators out there.
edit: I totally support what he did, but this is rather my individualistic preference. I get that some people may like seeing more content like his, but I personally prefer my content "concentrated" rather than "watered-down".

While as everyone else has their helpings by the spoon full.
Because You won't broaden out what you watch. You've restricted yourself into a corner.
Joel on the other hand is the opposite. By revealing his secrets he's shown that he's not afraid of what other people make. He's strongly confident that his content alone is more then just an arstyle.
By sharing his secrets he improves and encourages other CZcamsrs to be creative and to give them the spark so that their content might be able to be "concentrated"

    • @TechSupportDave
      @TechSupportDave Před 3 lety +1

      @@pingaspearce9403 [TL;DR at the bottom]
I disagree with this one part. I do not watch youtube enough to feel the necessity to NOT feed myself through a straw (Though I wouldn't call it that).
Therefore, I prefer to watch only the things that I love the most. My youtube experience would become significantly worse if I were to suddenly start watching everything that gets recommended to me.
For one, it would mess up my recommended as I previously mentioned.
Two, I'd be wasting a lot of time on content that I do not enjoy, or do not enjoy as much. This is something that I did when I was younger. I did not enjoy the amount of videos I'd abandon half-way. It was not only unhealthy watching things I don't enjoy, but it was also unhealthy how much time I actually spent on youtube.
Just to clarify, it's not that i'm not broadening my horizons. I have simply stopped letting myself get clickbaited. This means, 99% of the time I stay watching content that I enjoy the most. That 1% being that risk of wasted time. That's a balance that I'm fine with, as it means that for every 100 videos watched, there's one video that I watch that I don't know I'll like.
And, that 1 video IS usually a video that I'll like. Why? Because it's usually a video that truly grabs my interest and perfectly appeals to my preferences. In fact, these proportions are perfect in my case, because there's also a 1% chance that I'll stop watching a type of content or creator. So the things I watch are perpetually changing.
I probably wouldn't even call it a "Straw", but rather just a methodical approach that completely satisfies me.
There will always be amazing content creators that I won't know about. Why would I bother going out of my way to find them all when it's impossible in the first place? Why would I even want more if I'm already watching content that I wholly enjoy? I quite frankly don't see the point if I don't have the capacity to regularly watch them all in the first place.
This isn't pokemon. Maybe to you it is if you spend your entire days on youtube, but other people are often different. I can't spend my days searching through youtube for new things, and I don't know why I'd want to if I'm enjoying watching the things i'm enjoying.
TL;DR: I'm not feeding myself through a straw and who are you to tell me how I should use youtube? I'm already watching content that's as enjoyable as it can get for me, if you have a problem with that then you're simply an asshole.
      ---------------------------------------------------------------
Won't be bothering to reply any further as I'm anticipating people to purposefully misunderstand me, as you already partially did but there's no point pointing it out now.

He just changed my entire perspective on digital art.
Even though I tried not to, until now I think I somewhat looked down on digital drawings in particular, simply because the artists don't have to deal with a lot of the hassel involved in physical drawing or painting. Like being able to alter colors with one click or applying an effect instead of having to redo the whole thing if you want to change something.
But actually, I've always believed that there are way more important aspects to art than the technical skills, and also that it's a shame how many people can't express themselves creatively because they lack any such technical skills.
Now we finally have new forms of art that make that hurdle much easier to overcome. We are getting closer to the point where everyone can put art out there without having to spend years practicing, and that's a good thing. Creative vision and inspiration and things like that are becoming more important than technical ability, and imo that's how it should be.

Explaining the process whilst putting in the very techniques into the video, keeping the character going, the explanation going, while also finding a way to as an editor and creator have fun with it. Letting the video become somewhat meta. It's fun to see and kinda rubs up against humor for me. It can really give a glimpse into the mind of the creator to see the levels of effort behind a given project, and what little tidbits get hidden in-between the metaphorical lines. This video is weirdly genius even for being a behind the scenes kind of video.
