    Honestly, this video is not just good for animations but also should be watched by people who do level design. I have seen too many games fall into the trap of just "cutting" or "walling" off the area you arent supposed to go to when you could do so much more with it. Stanley Parable is the probably most perfect example for a game that creates optional spaces the player should ignore for the sake of the Story to a T. My most memorable area is the one that doesnt even stand out too much as the environment while out of place is still in line with the rest of the place. And which area? The office space in the section where you are listening to a grandious soundtrack thats supposed to make the journey following the Line even better.
    Suddenly you are in a bigger room and in the middle are pillars. You walk through them or by them, nothing changes but one of them extends into an impossible hallway. You arent barred off of going into it but you could so very easily miss it if you go for the story. More games need optional spaces like tihs, even ones that I would argue are explorable even if they serve no other purpose but to be ambient.

    This is a very similar philosophy to what I use when I make in-game screenshots in MMOs and other games. If you keep an eye out for interesting locations, you are bound to find something that no one else would’ve noticed.
    It not only gives you a bigger appreciation for the work that goes into these maps, but also lets you make things that you are satisfied with without having to create an entire environment from scratch.
    Great video, and as ever it makes me want to get into SFM.

    As someone who spent some of their early hours of TF2 just noclipping around tf2 maps to see what I could find, I entirely understand what you meant during the location scouting section. There is a Lot of effort put into shit you can’t actually fight in and therefore you don’t even pay attention to most of the time. i used to have some story in my head that the canyons surrounding places like badwater and dustbowl were filled with Grey mercenaries who weren’t part of either side.

    I always liked areas like this and always tried to explore them in every game i ever played. Getting out or atleast examining out of bounds areas and map edges always intrigued me. Glimpse at how world expands, of pondering how it connects with other bits of the world.
    As a kid i done alot of it in NFS games especially Carbon. Looking how each canyon race was placed relative to the city(which was incredibly inaccurate on given world map, but oddly thought out by the level designers to actually fit naturally with minimal inconsistencies. Or the myesterious areas never mentioned or reachable in the game, but visible in the distance from some canyon routes.
    All darkness of the map as it was night time in Carbon, just added to that mystery.

    I love exploring the out of bounds areas in TF2 maps. Due to tf2's multiplayer nature, as you said, those areas often look even more interesting and are filled with little detail props and implied story. I especially love maps that have "lawful neutral" out of bounds barricades by blocking pathways with some conspicuous object, making those out of bounds areas feel more connected to the playspace (e.g. on the christmas turbine map, blue spawn has that stairway at the back blocked by a couch).

    I've never made a map, but I feel like it's probably pretty likely that map makers who spend a lot of time on these non-playable little background areas would probably really appreciate people finding a way to make them useful for something other than just being background props during gameplay. In game they serve only to make a map feel bigger and part of a larger world than it really is, but in a machinima type project they can be front and center settings for things to take place in. It's a way for these sections of the maps to be something just a little bit less ignored.

There's like these doors that don't open but they actually are connected to the outside as well as the inside and also a long hallways that leave nowhere and all kinds of cool stuff. If I was a mapper and he sends I would make an open to fort where every door that's closed would be open and actually lead to where it's supposed to go and remove the fences blocking each side of the outside bridge area and maybe even add a train that goes along the train tracks near blue base but I don't even know how to use source filmmaker let alone hammer

    Cod black ops 3 has a ton of insane maps that were generally mid for gameplay (that’s why everyone picked nuke town) but genuinely some of the coolest environments I’ve seen in a game since release. Like the designers packed so much tiny insane details and thought into the maps that it blows me away and I used to boot up a single player custom game and just have fun exploring ((I forget the name of the map but there is one where you can walk through a building that has been bombed out and turned on its side and my favorite detail being all of the destroyed furniture and interior that was displaced by whatever happened there, were all strewn about in plausible ways so as you look at it, one could reasonably deduce the buildings layout before the destruction))

    i'm a beginner in 3d animation and i'd like to ask a probably silly miscellaneous 3d animation question;
    how do you space your keyframes apart when animating a character? do you follow any strict guidelines when placing keyframes, or do you just place them wherever so long as it makes the animation better? i ask because the 12 principles of animation mention 'animating in twos' or 'animating in ones', but i've never seen any benefit in animating in twos or ones in 3d since we have interpolation and don't need to animate something every frame. i've always brushed off animating in twos or ones as being something only 2d animators have to do and have never bothered actually trying to do it, however i've always seen placing keyframes just anywhere without any particular rhyme or reason being rather cumbersome and sometimes buggy.
    do you think animating in twos or ones is a waste of time in 3d animation, when you can (theoretically) achieve the same thing with more interpolation? do you follow some other rhythm of placing keyframes unique to 3d animation like animating in 10s or some other interval?
    i'd really like to know what you think regarding this, thanks in advance.

    • @Anomidae
      @Anomidae  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Hi! here's my thoughts on this topic:
      3D animation spacing should be considered differently, but I think it's important to not ignore the wisdom that comes along with thinking on "1s and 2s"
      A good analog for how we deal with this would be "keyframe density", or how many intermediary poses you need to connect two key poses together. The way you figure this out, is you look at the spacing of your animation to figure out how to build the in between poses. In 3d, we would place as may inbetweens as we need to make sure that the animation spacing looks right. If a character is flying from left to right really fast, you don't want them zipping across the screen instantly or you might miss it - so adding inbetweens to connect the beginning and end poses together give it more consistency. It's one of those things you do to taste
      For fast motion, interpolating by hand, even frame by frame, can be VERY ideal to make stuff looks great in motion and less stiff
      on the other hand, if you have a very slow animation, adding too many breakdowns can make it feel jittery and unstable, so in this case, removing poses/keyframes will greatly improve it
      Just remember, the 12 principles of animation aren't rules, but buckets of wisdom you can use to analyze an animation piece to try and figure out what it's missing or what needs to be removed

      this is very much a thing! devs start mapping with 'grey-boxing' which is the process of just blocking out the basic shape of a map, ignoring any extra detail. you can use this to test how a map plays and the gameplay balance before you invest time into fixing up the art

    1. How do map transition ? Do I have to make a New project if I want a New map in the scene?
    2. Will you teach us how to write a script for animation too?

    ive always had a strong fascinationg with out of bounds areas in videogames i played.
    ill give examples for one of my favorite games i played as a child (around 2008)
    in boarder zone/supreme snowboarding, theres like 4 maps, with slight variations and different routes depending on your chosen difficulty. it doesnt have any invisible walls. if you can jump over a fence, you can ride around in an unplayable area so long as you dont crash and respawn. in one particular map, ive managed to jump onto a frozen river and stay on it for a pretty long time, almost reaching the end of the level. i dont think any route actually takes you there, its meant to always be out of bounds. but you can go there anyway, and have a look at a few untextured rock walls (from behind) and low-quality trees youre never supposed to see up close.
    i was also able to turn around at the very beginning, push myself up the slope and fall into an undetailed void. very fun. i never beat a single race in boarder zone.

      true! despite that, looking back I feel like it was a bit too much of a reward for the quality I produced back then... but regardless, the memory maker that came with it is one of my most treasured digital possessions...

    The little scout-ufo clip had fantastic animation to it, was that just a little thing made for this video or was it part of another project of yours?

    A bit off topic. In the interloper series, could you try half life 2 mods like entropy zero 2 or half life 2 vr?
