Some helpful advice on the PureWick Female Catheter usage. Dr. Lin practices at Sunrise Urology in Gilbert, Arizona. www.SunriseUrology.com #Incontinence #PureWick #FemaleCatheter
My mother used it for 4 months. I suggest if your patient is thin and still moves and reposition self somewhat, use a pair of briefs underwear to help keep the blue wick in place. And when you place the wick, think of a hotdog bun with the hot dog being placed into the bun. Fyi.
$600.00 for the device, then$200 or more a month for the catheters! Outrageous. I think its terrible they charge this much. And insurance doesn't cover it unless a doctor deems it medically necessary.
I’m a retired RN and having worked on an urology unit I’ve had extensive experience with incontinent patients. I have to say the premise of the PureWick is great. The price however is ridiculous. It’s tubing and a suction canister and it should not need to be that expensive!! Does Medicare pay for this? Most elderly women on Social Security would not be able to afford this! I dare say the condom catheters for male incontinence don’t even come close to the cost of this!! How do you justify this cost???
I put the soiled catheter in a "Delicates & Hand Washable" bag and on delicate cycle I just throw it in through a wash cycle, let it air dry. I do not take them apart so far so good.
Omg thank you!! I took one apart to see what I can use to refill it lol at the hospital they keep throwing it away and I was like omg noooo there has to be a way I can use this system at home and cheaper. I found the whole system buying it separately for 60 bucks
Thanks for the tips. We just got the PureWick for our 92yrs old grandma. It works pretty good. Some leakage as we learn how to use it. We were thinking about washing and reusing it a couple of times to help save on costs.
Yeah I'm def reusing or at least figuring out how to cover it with products that will replace the one on there. I do home health and so far I got the cost for the system down to 30 bucks! My patient families love me and I love I have been able to help reduce the UTI and infections and rashes associated with diapers
Thanks I guess I will try as well I can't afford 290. A month from Amazon also someone mentioned buying a sub pump but I need the right suction cheaper 4 sure
I need this badly. I always have it at my hospitalizations. I'm home now, bedbound, and had to discontinue 2 of my meds that are supposed to cause me to urinate even more, and i had to stop drinking my water i desperately need for my chronic dehydration. I feel absolutely horrible physically now. I just don't have the money for a pur wik. 😢
… any suggestions or do I need to now order mom mesh undies to help hold in place. We still are not sleeping our full night cycle do to getting up and checking catheter and then finding out her adult pad is soaked and the canister is not even holding a full amount of urine .
I bought this for my mother, who has dementia and has trouble communicating. She can get up from bed at night to urinate between 5 to 20 times in one night. I thought this was a good solution, but the first try has yielded nothing. She is not able to help me in placing the wick, so placement is likely to be the problem. My mother gets easily agitated and I'm thankful she tolerated this trial. I'm afraid she may not allow me to try it again. I had to remove the wick when she complained after about 8 hours. All she was able to say was "Dry." Now having read the reviews, I learn that this product can cause dryness of the skin. I want to learn more before another attempt. But I'm afraid I may have to face the loss of some $600, which I can't afford, since it cannot be returned.
How do you keep it in place while sleeping? My mother has lymphedema in both legs and struggles with walking. She bought this, and it is hit or miss with it staying in place.
Is there any suggestion on how you could use this device for a male that is in hospice??I am desperate for suggestions. I have seen catheter bags for males could that be used with Purewick.
There is a male version but only in the hospital at this time. From what I understand the male version is not yet approved. In the hospital it is a bag, and uses adhesive to secure it to the groin area. I hope they can come up with a male version for at home.
My mom is in a SNF, totally incontinent, and has a stage 4 bedsore on her coccyx due to being wet all the time. The facility said they never use external catheters due to cost. How can I get her MD to prescribe this so her bedsore can heal properly? She's had the bedsore for over a year.
I just got a purewick and it is loud. In your other video, you said it was a mild hum but this one makes lots of noise. Have you heard of them being noisy?
@@LatashaCM good idea. Just make sure that the weight of the blanket doesn’t weigh too much on where the tube inserts into the canister making the tube bend too much and make a kink in it so that the pressure gets cut off. Just make sure the tubes don’t get kinked. I’m only mentioning this because I always have a thick folded bath towel over the top of mine and once or twice the weight of it made the tube kink.
If you can control the flow somewhat. I had to or it did leak. It's uncomfortable to have to stop and start a strong flow, but it's better than diapers!
*The Purewick Female External Catheter should NOT be used on patients with urinary retention.* It says in their user manual and on their website, under Contraindications.
Yes, they can. My mom had 3 strokes last year and is bedridden and incontinence right now. The purewick is wonderful and I wash the ones she does get poop on. She likes it because she can have her privacy and not sit in pee waiting for someone to clean up up all day.
Absolutely yes! I am a quadriplegic and I can’t get up and go to the bathroom at any time ever so I use this system 24 hours a day and will for the rest of my life. It is a real lifesaver because it sucks up all the urine and prevents me from having to wear a diaper which would eventually get filled with urine and my skin would be against the urine filled diaper Until someone shows up to change me. Having urine against your skin compromises your skin and makes it more likely to get bedsores. The pure wick absorption area is very much less than the area of a whole diaper so it protects the skin from the acidity urine And decreases the likelihood of starting pressure sores. It’s very very important for someone who cannot move to have the pure wick system. I cannot emphasize this enough. I had a lot of little sores, and since I started using pure wick, all of them have disappeared.
@cuppatea4466 how many catheters do you go thru a day? Do you wash and reuse them? I'm interested in buying one but we can't afford $200 just for a box of 30.😢
Not recommended by manufacturer, but people have been washing and reusing for a while now. Join Purewick User's and Community Group on Facebook for much more info.

I didn’t think insurance covers it at all

No it is not covered at all
The tip about not blocking the small “valve”hole is si important. I have a resident who was having issues with suction. Thank you
How do you not block it?
I put the soiled catheter in a "Delicates & Hand Washable" bag and on delicate cycle I just throw it in through a wash cycle, let it air dry. I do not take them apart so far so good.
Thank you for sharing this. I spend about $600 a month on these. My mom usually needs 3 a day. God bless you!!!!
God bless!!
Just bought it.
I was desperate to get sleep at night!!

@Jes58790 How's that working out? How many times can you re use after washing?
@@AuntLALAwhere did you find it for $60?
Thank you for these helpful tips!

I had one of these when I was in the hospital a few months ago - weirdest feeling EVER when the suction device turns on!!!
I could benefit from using this would like more information on how I could get one, please

Hello everyone!
I opened valve( adjusted), and I don’t hear that sound the catheter has, also it doesn’t stay in place. I have to use tape. Uh!
Great tips
What is tj e price

I want one ASAP. My mother can't move right now. Don't know if she will ever get better.
God Bless you! Praying for healing for your mom!
Is she doing better? 🙏
Hiw loud is the machine that the urine collects it in
It's really quiet!
Hahaha love the dad joke with the drum 🥁 😂
Thank you!!!
Does the machine run continuously or do we only turn it on during changes?
It should run continuously to suction as urination happens. Turn it off when replacing the disposable part or emptying the canister.
How do you keep it in place while sleeping? My mother has lymphedema in both legs and struggles with walking. She bought this, and it is hit or miss with it staying in place.
She need to keep legs close to keep it in.
You can also put a piece of tape on hose by the belly.

Contact her urologist or PCP and let them know about PureWick. You have to advocate on her behalf.
@@JCLinMD thank you !
She is lucky to have you!
Talk to her doctor and insurance co.
Sadly most ins. Do mot cover any longer
I just got a purewick and it is loud. In your other video, you said it was a mild hum but this one makes lots of noise. Have you heard of them being noisy?
Mine is loud too
My mothers machine was loud too but we put something under the machine and it seems to absorb the sound more making it a little less noisy.
My mother's is loud to so I folded a twin size blanket and I put it over it. It is not loud anymore.
We put it in a closet for noise control.
@@LatashaCM good idea. Does this prevent you from having to get up& go to the bathroom?
Ideally, you should get up to go. Some people can't void at the bathroom or commode, so they use this to avoid any urinary leakage issues.
Can the wick handle a "heavy" flow of urin?
If you can control the flow somewhat. I had to or it did leak. It's uncomfortable to have to stop and start a strong flow, but it's better than diapers!
What can we use as a substitute for catherter to cut down on price.
Some have reused catheters. Not recommended, of course.
I have urinary retention so I use catheter it's really not easy

Can it be used on a stroke patient with less mobility
Yes.

It doesn’t work the way they say. I should know I was in the hospital n wasn’t able to be moved out of bed.
I think mave it is case by case. My mom was hospitalized with a broken back and it truly worked amazing
Mine in the hospital works well as long as they empty it every hour. When it's full it doesn't suction of course.
Why is a man doing this???
This device is not designed for men, but for women.
I am a male urologist, BTW.
He loves grandma duh
Lol
Thing is lousy don't waste your money nobody pees a drop at a time it sucks
