Felix the cat! What a memorable run, my favourite Leafs team of all time.
That Leaf's team was so stacked, it seemed impossible they wouldn't win the cup that year.
Despite being born and raised in Toronto, I grew up a fan of the *Buffalo Sabres* (insert joke here). That said, two of my most favourite hockey players of all-time played for *’your’ Toronto Maple Leafs.* They being *Dave Keon* (BY FAR, the *best* Maple Leafs player I ever saw) & the cat being interviewed here in this video, *Felix Potvin.*
Still losers.
@Mark Levy still lost
@Mark Levy That team was special and I don't even like Toronto, but those years with Gilmour, Felix and Clark were awesome. Gretzky was going to get to the finals with the Kings, no matter what happened with other teams or what happened on the ice. We all know that. Imagine Montreal vs Toronto in the Stanley Cup Finals that year?
Not the NHL.
We definitely need more of these videos
Thanks Ashley! Glad you enjoy them. This is actually episode 14, have you watched them all?
These are great!! Keep em coming from all aspects of the the game. Love it
nah like DM hand of god stick of god
No we don't. Excuses are for losers.
Felix was only 21 during this series that's insane man
Gretzky "had the ability to get lost on the ice and then pop up at the right place at the right time." Very true.
Potvin was so good!! Shame he never got to a cup finals.
This was Wendel Clark's best game.
Forget about the missed high stick, why on Earth were 3 Leafs below the goal line when the greatest of all time is standing alone in front of the net lol
Great point. Overpursuit and being tired. This was their 20th playoff game in 40 days or something like that. Fatigue lets mistakes creep in. Had they not passed to 99 they had 2 wide open D who could sneak low to the slot and fire away, with 99 waiting for any rebound.
He wasn't the greatest of all time by making himself easily covered
Like Felix said, he had an uncanny ability to get lost on the ice and pop up out of nowhere.
Everyone was in Gretzky's office and he stepped out
I guess I'm kinda off topic but does anybody know a good site to watch newly released tv shows online?
Ran across the street in front of the Maple Leaf Gardens and you gave me an autograph. Always my favourite goalie. Also I was at this game.
Thanks for sharing with us!
Felix was amazing in his day. The Cat was one of my favourites.
The Fix was in play to ensure that L.A. would be in the finals so that the TV audience would be more valuable. I was at that game and it was so obvious that it was fixed especially the penalty that was called after Gretsky cut Gilmore given to Adreychuk.
Glenn Anderson. It was a very late cross check into boards . Called as roughing. Could have been called boarding. Putting the whistle away is one thing , causing a penalty right in front of them leaves them no choice
As a Leafs fan that was hard to watch again. I can remember my brother kneeling on the floor after the penalty praying LA wouldn't score. We were all so upset they lost it was a hard pill to swallow and we all hated Gretzky for years lol. Today I love watching Gretzky play and his prowess of hockey but when I see him do that fist pump with that smile on his face it brings up an anger in me every time hahaha. Just got to say also that Potvin was one of my favorite goalies of all time man those pads and that helmet it was the coolest. Great memories of growing up thanks for this.
It’s a complicated emotion when it comes to being a Leafs fan and a Gretzky fan! 🤔
Felix Potvin!!! My favorite goalie of all time!
Best hockey youtube series I can think of. Awesome stories, insights, and memories
Wow, thanks so much TPark. I really appreciate it and I’m glad you are enjoying them!
I was in net is One of the best ideas. I’ve watched every video. Please keep this series going.
Sadly I remember this all too well
Such a great video! More Felix Potvin content!!! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!
And Clark gave McSorley that memorable shiner earlier in the series.
Gotta love The Cat !!
Love this series.. this is good stuff/content. memories, hearing from the old stars, just awesome.
Thanks! I’m glad you are enjoying it!
Please keep making these videos; I am really enjoying them.
Felix Potvin the best goalie ever for me
Another fantastic video!! Of the 12 done so far, my favorite is the Steve Smith one. I say that as a fan of Smith. He was a solid, stay-at-home defenceman and rebounded to have a great career. 👍
Thanks Brian! Appreciate it. There are actually 14 of them so you have two other episodes you can watch!
And the way Steve Smith handled that incident was amazing. That could have easily ruined his career!
If Kerry Fraser had put Gretzky in the locker room, he would have been officiating high school games the next year.
Dumb comment
Its true.
93 was the first Stanley cup finals I ever watched LA Kings fan great to see them beat the leafs heartbreaking to see them loose to the Canadians. Potvin went on to be a very solid goaltender for the LA Kings- I always liked him.
Canadiens not Canadians.
Game 7 was the last time I ever really fully cried. I feel like Montreal would’ve beat us senseless, but we’ll never know.
Na i think Toronto would have won
Who knows what could have happened
patrick roy and montreal could have swept them
or maybe it would have been an epic battle with toronto winning the stanley cup
I wasn't even alive and im not a fan of either team but im pissed off that it didnt happen
That series would’ve been a throwback to the 1950s and ‘60s. Now, I’m just hoping they meet in the first round (EDM/CGY in the other round would be a wet dream)
Every Montreal opponent won a big series ( Buffalo over Boston ) NYI ( somehow over Pittsburgh ) and LA (over Toronto ) and then put up little fight against Montreal. I think Toronto would have given Montreal all it could handle. The thing I can't figure the Fraser thing out; the rule then was automatic 5 minutes and a game misconduct for drawing blood with a high stick.
We were robbed the opportunity of a Leafs / Canadians final. No matter what the outcome it would have been an epic series.
These videos are awesome.
Thanks so much! Do you have a fav?
This was THE GAME that changed my view on sports. I realized at that moment that professional sport was not Sport but was a Business and Entertainment (just like a movie or theatre, etc). The rose coloured glasses were removed. I stopped watching hockey at the end of that game for 20 years. I refused to watch Game 7. I know Gretzky was traded to Los Angeles to help the business of hockey and rightly so, and He did. But for a true sports person, this was the game that showed me the light of Professional Sports... its 3 hours of time that takes you away from real life.
For people that weren't following hockey that year, this was monumental. To refresh everyone's memory, high sticking infractions were targeted that year specifically. To reduce high sticks but the penalties were severe. Gretzky's high stick on Doug Gilmour should have been a 5 minute penalty, plus Gretzky would have been kicked out for that game and, if my recollection is correct, he would have missed the next game too. An argument was made that it may have just been a double minor penalty... not that it matters, as the penalty wasn't called.
My thought was that the "missed call" was actually a "business decision" (marketing), not a "sports decision".
It was the correct one for hockey in general, for the advancement of hockey in the USA, but not the rules of true sport. I changed that day.
I loved Felix - he was the perfect goalie for that team. Also, the Leafs best home grown talent prior to this bunch - ghosts of 93 - Boo!
Felix is pretty much the greatest Leafs goalie of the last 50 years.
Yeah that was heartbreaking, I was 14 and I still remember the blown call.
1 of the best leaf teams ever! Plus pat burns was a beaut!
It’s definitely one of the worst blown calls
When I think of a blown call, I think of a ref who misses something he should have called. In this case, Fraser intentionally let Gretzky get away with the high stick. When the Leafs complained, his reasoning was it was an accident. That means he must have seen it to say it was an accident. Since just about every high stick is an accident (a few psychos as exceptions), he realized later that his reasoning was flawed, so he changed the story after the fact to say he didn't see it.
damn you Kerry Fraser!
Said every Leaf fan!
Great team's control their own destiny. They don't count on other teams to win games for them. And they don't put it in the ref's hands.
Rigged. Stupid gretzky
If they made it to the finals, and say they lost, every Toronto fan wouldnt want to be reminded they lost to Montreal
I could live with that much more easily than THIS
This was the problem with the three official system. There’s no way Fraser can see this from the far side during a scramble in the slot, but a backside official would certainly have called it
Thanks Kerry! It was 26 years at the time and you added another 26 years and counting.
Leafs in the West was awesome...
No way ANY ref was calling a high stick in OT on Wayne Gretzky. The shocking non call to me was Kerry Fraser not giving Blake a penalty shot. Fraser loved calling penalty shots. Back when the league wasn't NEARLY as liberal with them as they are in this era.
Now do Mike Vernon in goal for Krushelnyskis OT winner in '90.
Great series. I have watched them all. You should look at game seven in the 2014 Western Conference Final between LA and Chicago. That was an awesome series. Two dynasty teams. LA won when Alec Martinez scored on Corey Crawford.
I remember running into Kerry Fraser at the Staal Foundation Open, a golf tournament that was in Thunder Bay for a few years. I got my picture with him, and I struggled not to bring this up, considering he's likely heard enough about it already.
As for Potvin, he's gotten into coaching more recently, leading the AAA Magog Cantonniers to the gold medal game at the 2019 Telus Cup. Even though his team went undefeated throughout the tournament, they would lose the final 1-0 to the Toronto Young Nationals in overtime.
What if Fraser wasn't blind? History will be made.
thats a follow through on a shot. not a penalty. Plus Doug Gilmore is an awful human being so whatever. (look up why he was traded from st.louis if you don't know what Im talking about.)
@@jackmakackov7077 Frazer himself said later in an interview that it was a miss call
@@butterfinger3242 but why are 3 Leafs behind the goal line and Gretzky not covered? Leafs blew that play bigtime. Potvin had no chance and that's all folks. Blown calls happened all the time back then with no replay and 1 ref. Doesn't excuse the 3 Leafs behind the net in a penalty kill situation.
@@jasonvoorhees8545 that play wouldn’t have even happened if Fraser wasn’t blind tho
We need Vanbiesbrouck on the 96 finals game 4 3OT 1-0 Krupp goal
These are quickly becoming my favorite thing to watch on yt. 🖒
Thanks! Glad you are enjoying them. Do you have a favourite?
Felix is one of my favorite goalies of all time.
leafs trading fuhr gave potvin all the confidence in the world. He said grant was a great guy but at the sametime you are always looking for your shoulder
Potvin has never received the credit he deserves for the numbers he put up.
Right?!
he had a few good seasons in toronto then went to boston, Los angeles, islander ect he was never the same again. He could never improve his game as the nhl kept changing like roy fuhr belfour joseph and others
And Fraser's hair never moved...
The real MVP was Fraser's hair product.
@@thanatossassin Gotta get me some of that! Just kidding. Take care 🇨🇦
😂
Love these and Potvin was a solid goal tender for quite a few years.
Thanks! Glad you enjoy them!
The 1993 Leafs, not the most talented team but a team that was perfectly balanced with skill, speed, grit, experience, toughness and experience.
I had respect for the 93 and 94 Leafs.
Thanks for this clip. People always give Kerry crap for not calling the high stick. But after watching this video I can honestly say that Kerry had his eyes on the right place. His eyes were looking at the net at the time of the high stick.
I am an Oilers fan and grew up watching Gretzky. I was cheering for the Leafs that year and yes I think Gretzky should have gotten a 5 min major. I also think Toronto would have beaten LA and then beaten Montreal.
What a world that would be!
@@CBCSports Momentum plays such a big part of the game, if they would have beaten LA and Gretzky, they would have been riding high on momentum!
The reality is the Leafs had all of game 7 at home in their own building to make up for it. And they blew it. Gretzky answered the bell with 3 goals and an assist. The Leafs lost game 7 at home fair and square.
One of my favourite goalies of all time.
These videos are great!
Thanks. Glad you like them. Any favourites?
I liked the one with Patrik Stefan the best but all of them are great!
This was the best Maple Leaf team in 50 years. A Leaf v Habs final would have been ridiculously classic. As an official myself, I never ever give "benefits of the doubt". Easier said than done in the moment though. The disappointing thing is that the play in question was in clear sight, on a power play (one less player, real easy to see more) and WHERE THE PUCK WAS, sooo I'm not sure what Mr Fraser was looking at in that moment. And hey, I'm no Leaf fan but that's not an obscured, in the corner, behind 5 bodies look.
I remember this well, too well. It's simple the NHL didn't want two Canadian teams in the finals and even today don't 31 years later.
Makes me stick Every time I think of this game.
Wayne got so many breaks back in those days. Mario got mauled on a daily basis but Gretz got kid gloves treatment his whole career.
omg shut up fruit loop
The Cat!
Do a "i was in goal for" Rob Brown's goal against philly when Hextall chased him. Lol
Sorry This was not missed it was intentionally ignored. You can debate for what reason “because it was Gretz” because Fraser had it in for leafs” whatever it is I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt, the high stick was ignored and not missed!!!
Thanks for chiming in!
Gretz game winner in game 6 is 90% of the goals online in NHL 21.
Did Wayne ever comment on the high stick?
Felix watching some classic games from his home in good old Magog, Quebec.
2 ideas for next episode
1. I was in net for... the kucherov no move goal... TWICE.
2. I was in net for... Bobby Orrs Stanley cup winning goal
Felix's looking good and healthy. I thought they were going all the way, could you imagine a Toronto Montreal final? Great leaf team though.
That would have been incredible.
@Rob Pizzo can we bring back the Hockey Night in Canada podcasts as well? I was so sad to not see new episodes in a while
Ha! Decisions like that are above my pay grade. But thanks for the kind words.
Not enough Potvin interviews available. I would love to sit down with him and ask him many in-depth questions about his career, and his views on today’s game. He has a unique French Canadian accent because of his time playing in Toronto, Long Island, Vancouver, Los Angeles, and Boston. He doesn’t seem to be on social media. Might have to drive to Quebec and find him! 😆
We’re grateful he spent the time with us! Class act!
The non-call on Gretzky's high stick on Gilmour was a criminal act. The fix!!
Then Montreal went to cheat against the LA Kings by having a security guard measure the curve of their sticks- look into it.
Gretzky should have been in the box when he scored.
Dunno if it's been done before but "I was in net for... Mario Lemieux scoring 5 goals 5 different ways"
Former Boston Bruins great Felix Potvin! Time to get over it though buddy!
That no call was not nearly as bad as the game 5 no call during the Bruins/blues Stanley Cup finals game 😲
As bad as it was for you Leaf fans to see that non call I’m sure you were all ecstatic when the Habs took the cup away from those evil kings.
The Leafs still got beat regardless of that high stick play. It’s not like the non-call took anything away from the Leafs in that moment. It would be different if Gretzky took down Gilmour on a breakaway, robbing the leafs of a chance. The high stick play wasn’t a missed chance for the Leafs. They just didn’t get a power play and had to play even strength instead and lost.
Gretzky would of got a 5 minute major for drawing blood and thrown out of the game Back in those days when you got a major penalty you were thrown out of the game So how can you say it wouldn't of made a difference
Potvin looks like your local trucker jajajajajajaja
Kerry Fraser to this day says he did not see the high sticking infraction , Kerry , it was Wayne Gretzky & Doug Gilmour , with the puck , What the heck were you looking at , OH FIXING YOUR HAIR ....
🤣
Thanks for beating up Ron Hextall , Felix , great memories lol.
Like being stabbed by a 'Morgul Blade' "It's never quite healed Sam".
I'ma Habs fan and we saw this while we were living down south... I'll tell you the leafs got robbed..and we all missed a classic 7 game thriller series.....go Cat!
Never did the Leafs cheer for the Canadians to win until after this series.
And they got their wish.
What about goal being called back, or defense bailing them out?
I always loved Gretzky, but that night I hated him. Let's not even talked about Game 7 - although 99 did put on a magic show that night.
I have read a lot of messages exactly like this one over the last 24 hours!
Pretty sure mom and dad didn't make me go to school the next day.
Leafs Habs finals would have been amazing
This ref is universally hated by every leafs fan that ever lived.
not going to lie it still hurts
😢
My uncle says this is the single reason why the leafs haven't won the cup
Who knows, maybe Potvin out plays Roy in that series
Leafs are standing around their own goal, Gretzky comes in and scores while those guys are not doing anything. Yes blown call, Fraser didn't see it but besides that the dmen were blew the play. It wasn't Gretzky's fault no one was covering him RIGHT IN FRONT OF POTVIN ! Had they played more coverage, things might have been different.
He's right
Please make one on Vincent Riendo getting punched by Bob Probert
Classic!
Still stings!
YOU HAVE TO DO PATRICK KANES 2010 CUP GOAL!!!
They dont mention that the game 6 goal was off not a pass but a deflection.
How is Kerry Fraser's hair ?
We need Marty to talk about off the floor, on the board
That's horrendous, not even a minor penalty when it was definitely a major
I think at that time there was no minor or double minor for highstick causing blood...bad missed call..but leafs had game 7 at home...missed opertunity
This was the reason why I was never a Wayne Gretzky fan hahaha! He got away with a lot, just like Crosby, due to their elite status. It's all politics, unfortunately. Besides, 1993 was Gary Bettman's first year as the Commissioner of the NHL and I doubt that he would have wanted two Canadian teams in the finals. Probably the same reason why the Calgary Flames got screwed over by a non-call on a goal that they scored against the Tampa Bay Lightning, Interestingly enough, no Canadian team has won a Stanley Cup since the Montreal Canadiens in 1993. Coincidence? I think not! Get Commissioner Gordon in here, please! We need the Batman, not some poser by the name of Bettman!
Yeah I think the same thing as well.
I have often said as long as Bettman is comissioner of the NHL your could put the best players of every Canadian team on one team and they would still not win the cup.
@@SvenTSchixe We'll see what happens, but I'm hoping that a Canadian team actually wins the Stanley Cup while Bettman is still around, just to see that priceless look on his face hahaha!
That stupid Edmonton oiler dynasty gave the cup to the Montreal canadiens lmao that Glenn Anderson penalty was clearly stupid
What an unbelievable memorable series! YEs it was a very bad missed call...perhaps the Leafs go on to win the game and defeat the Canadiens? Who knows...Felix thanks for the memories!! AS painful as some may be! Terrific goaltender, I have a signed framed photo of you in my room!
But this series as a ten year old was the first hockey series I watched game for game and made me to this day and until the day I die a hard core Maple Leafs and Kings fan!! I never miss a game when the two play in Toronto since 2010!
As A Red Wings fan, I know how you feel Felix. I was at game 7 at The Joe. The Wings had scored 10 PP and 3 SH goals in the 1st 6 games. "Donut Don" called no penalties against the Leafs in the final game. 4 cups later, it's still a bitter feeling. DAMN you Borchevsky!! Haha!
I’m not a wings fan but I certainly remember that game. It was ridiculous that one penalty wouldn’t be called the entire game. A guy at work knew Doughnut Don’s brother in law and this guy told him Don definitely slanted things in the Leafs favour and not just that game either. Koharski had some sports center near Toronto and he told his brother in law he was always worried if Leaf fans hated him then his business would suffer.
Clark was Captain. Not Dougie, Felix ha ha ha ha .
Real championship teams find ways to overcome bad calls. Can't believe there are still people crying about this. Nobody was taking that cup from Patrick Roy, really doesn't matter.
