    Top Fuel Dragsters are the fastest accelerating cars on earth. They pump out about 11,000 horsepower and as much torque as 65 F1 cars.
    That’s enough to produce the same explosive force as a small earthquake.
    So really it’s unsurprising that sometimes they go bang. And in a big way.
    The Engines are pushed so hard that at full throttle they’re always just on the verge of splitting the engine block and creating one very large fireball.
    And well, they tend to make a habit of it.
    So what’s going on here? What makes them create so much power? And why does that tend to involve a big bang?
    Let’s get into it.
    Top Fuel Dragsters literally live life a quarter-mile at a time. Everything about them is engineered to cover 1000 feet as absurdly fast as possible.
    It’s no secret that to get anything to move that fast, it’s going to need a LOT of power.
    But surprisingly they use the same engine as a 1970s Cadillac Eldorado?
    Yep. It’s an 8.2 Litre Supercharged Chrysler Hemi V8.
    They don’t put those sorts of engines in family cars here in Europe.
    Anyway, it’s design has remained pretty much unchanged since the early 1950s, with ONE Intake Valve, and ONE exhaust valve.
    I think my Golf is quicker than that Chevvy
    But really, yes the 500 cubic inch block is the same - almost nothing else is.
    They’re dialled up to eleven.

      I was aware of it before but I think it's a really cool fact that there's enough heat and pressure in the cylinder for the fuel/air mixture to ignite under compression alone like a diesel as mentioned at 7:11.
      I did learn something new about the fuel being pumped in at such an extreme rate that there's a risk of hydrostatic lock.

    The thing that really puts the power of dragsters into perspective for me is the fuel pumps. When professionals talk about normal track cars or even drag cars and they discuss the parts specific to the cars like the fuel system and you find out that a usual measurement that is standard is gallons (or liters) per hour. But when you step up to top fuel dragsters their fuel pumps tend to run in gallons per minute. Around 64 gallons per minute. You have to see a fuel pump demo to really understand just how much fuel is being used. It makes you realize how much power is being made in such a short amount of time. Absolutely insane.

    • @aSinisterKiid
      @aSinisterKiid Před 2 lety +2

      @@Noreceipts400 Not necessarily. This would be the only situation where that rating would make any sense but the companies that make these type of products aren't limited to only dragsters. The rating for fuel pumps is meant to be an industry recognized national standard that can be identified anywhere. Similar to how things are rated in PSI or MPH or other industries like HVAC with ratings in BTUs. The dragster industry could rate these type of pumps as 1 gallon per second but there aren't any other industries who would be metering the devices output like that. Other uses for these types of pumps is typically at an industrial level and they are running 1,000s of gallons per hour that they need to meter. There are far more industrial needs for products in the 100-1,000 gallon per minute area like natural gas and oil where they deal in massive volumes of fluids that they meter over the course of hours, not seconds.

    just imagine...
    You are driving the average 1000hp twin-turbo Corvette/Camaro/Mustang/GTR or a Tesla. Over a mile up the road, a Top Fuel dragster is staged and ready to launch down a quarter mile strip as you pass. You have the advantage of a flying start. You run your car hard up through the gears and blast across the starting line and past the dragster at an honest 200 mph. The 'tree' goes green for both of you at that moment. The dragster launches and starts after you. You keep your foot down hard, but you hear an incredibly brutal whine that sears your eardrums and within 3 seconds the dragster catches and passes you. He beats you to the finish line, only 1000 feet from where you just passed him. Think about it, from a standing start, the dragster had spotted you 200 mph and not only caught, but nearly blasted you off the road when he passed you within a mere 1000 foot long strip of concrete.

    FYI, You may want to do a quick edit. Cadillac indeed used 500 cid engines from 1970 to 76, but these dragsters use designs based of Chrysler Hemi engines, in particular, second generation from the 60s, a very different design from a different company. Those Hemis have been dramatically updated with billet blocks, strengthening, new alloys, and lots of other tricks.

    I went to a drag race once in Charlotte. I had no idea what it'd be like and it was very different to what I kind of expected. First of all they let us stand right next to the 4-lane drag strip, right by the fence. The first race was a full 4-lane qualification. I had 40.000hp fly be me a few feet away. I was "blown away" by the sound and the forces of it... nothing can prepare you for that experience. You feel all 40.000 of those horsepowers rumbling in your lungs and shake your whole body. It is physically impossible not to be afraid of it and it took me about 30 mins to get somewhat used to the experience. It was wild! I'd recommend everyone to try this at least once! Also, these dragsters have no gearbox - they are direct drive and use a cone-shaped clutch to gradually allow all the power to the wheels. They let us walk around the paddock before the races started (something that is expensive and exclusive in F1) and ask questions to the mechanics working on the cars couple feet away. The whole experience was awesome.

It's an assault on all the body's senses. The noise, the air pressure waves the amazing speed in the blink of an eye, it's a sensory overload for 4 seconds.

    6:39 so on top of being a very powerful mechanical engine, just the waste energy in the exhaust is enough to double as a sufficiently strong literal rocket engine to be useful.
    A lot of actual rocket engines do the same thing but backwards - the actual thrust is generated by carefully spitting the exhaust out the tail-end as directly as possible, but some of it is fed through a turbine to provide power for other parts of the vehicle. Typically, this is a high-flow fuel/oxygen pump (basically a turbocharger), though there are often also electrical generators, hydraulic pumps, and other similar systems. This consumes some energy from the fuel, but since the fuel is the most dense energy source in the rocket, it's generally more efficient than just having another power source lying around.

  • @fuelledfunny
    @fuelledfunny Před 2 lety +26

    The Big & ugly is just one type of injector (not actually used in modern TF and FC). The Big & Ugly was a name created by Enderle (who offer bug, bird and buzzard catchers); the carbon injectors are generally referred to as 3 hole or 4 hole - high rise for Top Fuel and low level for Funny Car.
    It's a shame that the engines are seen as poor from a durability point of view, especially given the cylinder pressures they see relative to current F1 engines. Anywho, we'll continue to race these niche one trick ponies as long as we're allowed to.

I grew up in NJ and this track has a residential road literally RIGHT at the end of the runoff area, with a 3 ft concrete wall separating the 2. Dumb idea, but residents didn't wanna move the road way back when dragsters were much slower.

    • @UncleKennysPlace
      @UncleKennysPlace Před 2 lety +6

      Overall, the cars are relatively cheap (and you can literally buy the _best-of-the-best_ parts off the shelf) but consider that you do a complete rebuild after five seconds or so at full throttle. As the connecting rods are aluminum, you toss them after a certain number of runs; same with all other parts, all are "life-limited", unless they end their lives a little early on their own! Given that an F1 engine should last for about thirty hours (six or seven races, plus practice and quali), that is well over 20,000 times as long as a TF/FC engine. So using the average cost of a nitro run of nine grand USD, it would cost $180,000,000 to run as long as an F1 engine, which costs a percent of that.

    Things I have always loved about Top Fuel:
    1. Extremely simplified (by rule and design) from Formula 1 to keep costs down. (And keep more of the competition "on the track" instead of with whomever can afford to spend the most money on dozens of engineers and wind-tunnel testing.)
    2. Actually costs more per kilometer travelled than Formula 1. :)
    I'm not a huge race fan (although I do follow Formula 1), but I've heard it's absolutely incredible to see these cars in person because you can literally "feel" the sound of the engine in your chest from anywhere near the track.

Not being able to see clearly during a run because your eyeballs are vibrating from the shock waves. Crazy. One other fun fact that I found once upon a time but can't seem to find again. The engines are powerhouses but don't need to live that long. The documentary I saw calculated the actual number of revolutions a TF engine makes during a pass. It was only a little over 500.

    Wings a engine block to the rpm of a race launch, then slams a clutch together and the blower is wound out to the engine typical red line.
    Apparently it is heard throughout the entire race shop.
    Hoonigan and Leah Pritchett did a special including this badassery.

    I had no idea that Cadillac a General Motors car used a Chrysler motor. Top fuel dragsters use purpose built blocks and heads they do not use old Cadillac motors. The amount of furl that fills the cylinders is liquid not vapour and the amount of liquid is just about enough to cause hydraulic lock you can compress vapour but not fluid. It is really worth going on line and checking out this crazy engineering from people that do know about it.

    As an American viewer, I look outside to my 2002 Chevrolet truck with a factory 496c.i. 8.1L engine and ponder. 😂 But really though, top fuel and funny car are absolutely insane. If you ever get a chance to go to or be near one that is raced or fired up, you should! And I knew pretty much everything else, but I never thought about the exhaust pushing downforce on launch.

  • @edwardelliott5756
    @edwardelliott5756 Před 2 lety

    Yes the noise is incredible but what is truly awesome is the amount of heat coming out of the exhaust. My brother and I got up on a picnic table that had been dragged over to the fence. When a top fueler or funny car went by I thought I was going to have burns! Naturally NHRA put a stop to our fun. We were about 40 feet from the cars.

    Driver61, i have a big question. How come old drivers such as keke rosberg and gilles can get away with being fast yet very aggressive. Now i totally get the overload of power and lack of grip meaning that you had to slide and manhandle the car to be fast, and i get that 70s were a different era, but still in the 80s, it had become way more technical yet keke was still fast and drove the car sideways. How do they possibly stay quick?

    The hemi design is just a more efficient combustion chamber design. It does not inherently allow the use of larger valves.

    • @joecook3223
      @joecook3223 Před 2 lety

      Compared to having the valves on the same angle and plane(like a small block chevy or Ford wndsor head), a hemi head does allow bigger valves. A big block chevy, 385 series big block ford or Ford cleveland head for example have canted valves(not to the same extent as a mopar hemi though) partly to improve head flow, but also to allow the use of bigger valves.

    As a car guy for some reason these things never captivated me. Not sure why that is. I had a HotWheel when I was a kid of a dragster but that was it. I think it might be because it's hard to relate to these cars. Like where can you actually use them outside of the drag strip? And even so that's mostly only in America lol. Nonetheless, great video and very cool cars.

    I am going to agree with most of this video, but I ran an unblown nitro drag bike and the compession ratio was in the ratio of around 12.5:1, similar for cars I think, but when you use a blower or turbo, then the compression ratio must be reduced, to somewhere around 6:1 and this depends on the tuning of the engine and how fast the blower is being driven, OK?

    I got to enjoy some top fuel action last weekend. Nothing can beat standing on the startline with 11,000hp either side of you as your internal organs get massaged by the noise, and tears stream down your face from the nitro fumes.
    Common misconception is that the header flames are unburnt fuel. It's actually hydrogen in the air that is separated, and ignited by the heat and pressure of the exhaust gasses. Also, the only thing Cadillac has in common with a top fuel engine is the capacity. Top fuel engines are actually a 500ci version of the 60's Chrysler Hemi, which aside from allowing bigger valves, it also creates a more even burn of the air/fuel mixture due to the centrally located spark plugs. Good video otherwise.
