- The Ermine Street Guard in action, with help from Dutch, Germans, Italians and Belgians. You can see them marching, forming a testudo and a training fight between two legionnaries with javelin-training behind them.
The event took place in the archaeological park in Xanten, Germany: www.apx.lvr.de
The Ermine Street Guard: www.erminestreetguard.co.uk/
Xanten is a small German town near Duisburg. It is mostly known for its archaeological park in which one can visit the former Roman town Colonia Ulpia Traiana, a settlement of veterans near the Rhine from 110 A.D. to 275 A.D., when it was destroyed by the Franks. Today the archaeologists try to bring the Roman era back to life with experimental archaeology. Also, Xanten is the mythological birthplace of Siegfried, the hero of the Nibelungen-saga.
even the commands are given in latin
Bonk
Cool. These legionaries are of 4 nationalities (German, Dutch, Italian, Belgian), they listen to latin commands and act together based on that. They probably had only one or two days to "get used" to eachother. The standardization of army commands, fighting style, and drafts from all over the Roman empire really made sure they always had enough feet to trample the ground with.
Erm, never heard a dutch word in there.
Thats exactly how the roman army was like, which is pretty cool!

seeing the roman army in action at its peak would be high on my list of 'go back to any moment and watch' if it was possible.
Same dude.
Yea imagine watching this tactic in real life from a much more disciplined and organised army in action.
There was a city that rebelled, the Roman army had other problems, so the general decided he needed to take the city quickly
His tactic: march the legion back and forth, run it through drills and formations in front of the city for a day
The city surrendered
@ragnarian yeh, see its shit like that that makes me wanna see it in action.
If I was a billionaire I'd pay guys to march around my property like this.. That and retired navy seals in guard towers over head

It's kind of cool seeing them practice traditional Roman attacks there at the end. Romans were instructed to thrust rather than hack or slash, as I remember the reasoning being "a two-inch deep stab is deadlier than a long slash across the chest." It looks a bit more awkward than I imagined it, but the logic both makes sense, and it is accurate.
It’s probably more to do with thrusting in a forwards and backwards motion rather than swinging from side to side means you can stand in even closer order. Which has all kinds of benefits of its own.
(I’m not denying the bit about the 3inch wound though. I’m just saying as a reason for why they adopted the tactic. Probably the thought process is “how can we stay close so we don’t get broken up and killed” than “I’m pretty sure stabbing them is 35% more efficient than slashing” especially since they’d be both stabbing and slashing anyway if there was no specific fighting style mandated.
Sorry I kinda went off. I’m really high, forgive me.)
Today I was playing as the Romans on Rome Total War 2 (Great game) and my tactics won me the battle against two armies! :D
Rome is by far the best faction I personnaly love the armoured legionaries.
+samuel van der schoor Truth they ware very advanced in tecnolagy and more
Although (maybe a bit late) their lack of cavalry is bad, personally I go with macedon if I want to hammer and anvil.
samuel van der schoor Funny part is that I beat two Macedonian armies!
Vendetta yes, that's possible but macedon can beat rome of they use their pikes as anvils and attack with the cavalry.
Yes, I filmed it myself. The event took place at the archaeological park in Xanten, Germany and a woman of the museum talks to the audience about the Roman tactics. Plus, there are some people talking in the audience as well.
Germans presenting Roman phalanxes? "Today we are showing the tactics used by the Roman invaders which were used to pacify our natives"
+Isaiah MacDonald Not exactly.. least not entirely.
History is much more complicated than we think, sure, Rome had many wars with Germanic peoples (see for example the wars Roman-Germanic), but over the centuries, there were many covenants also (with whole tribes).
And not just when the empire was in decline but even when was in great health.
Without forgetting that there were many Roman general of Germanic origin (and many soldiers also), especially after three hundred AD.
The same Arminius (Battle of Teutoburg), grew up and was trained as a Roman, in fact, he was a commander of the Roman cavalry when destroyed the Varus legions (I'm simplifying... its history is much too complex).
Sry, I don't speak Eng but I hope you understand me in any case.
You should read more about Roman history. Not ALL the soldiers they had at the time were Roman especially not in the later stages of the Romantic Empire they used to rely heavily upon Auxiliaries
This isn't a Phalanx.
Isaiah MacDonald Testudo not phalanx
Its not a phalanx like in literal sense of greek style formation but what you likely dont know is the fact that Roman authors themselves used word "phalanx" also in more general sense to refer any compact military body from germanic barbarians to Roman army itself.
Love these armour so much. Great video. Hope there will be more.
Imagine if a soldier in the center let one rip during maneuvers ? They would beat that guy to death after the battle for sure.
In the ancient times, I bet nobody would notice the smell. Everything would smell worse.
***** My Vietcong victims might disagree with that if they werent dead of course
Breaking formation was the biggest crime after deserting in the Roman army. Punishable by flogging, and forever dishonor by the soldier's comrades.
don't people shit themselves when they die? least of their worries.
I did that all the time I'm formation haha because nobody could tell it was you lol. Everyone says it wasn't me and you just say the same hehhehehehe
WOW! The new For Honor troops so you don’t feel awkward playing roman heroes
Auxiliaries looked more professional than the legionnaires

Damn! this took place a 20 minute drive from my home and I didn't know it was happening. But Xanten is a place well worth visiting even if there are no Romans there.
The Romans were in Xanten, they called Castra Vetera.
The romans were in south, central, and west Germany during their height of the empire; yes the romans spread nicely in Germany. Germans today are made up of Eastern European, Nordic, and Western European people.
I totally agree, that could easily be one of the most impressive things one could see. The old movies about the Romans show relatively huge armies, consisting of real men, not CGI. No real reenactment, but it gives one an idea about how it could look like.
WOW! I can't believe you had so many people reenacting! I went to one of the castles round here once when all the local (as in from the whole region) reenactment groups got together and they barely had half a dozen people at most in each group.
So good ,great job!
Thank you! The orders given by the centurion are in Latin.
I just recognized how fun it would be to throw some Artillery to a legion
They had their"artillery", such as ballistas/skorpions, most of their adversaries weren't so advanced (except Parthians)
This is very cool. And I know exactly how hard it is to lift that shield. They are very untrained but they did a amazing job.
I thank you very much for giving this information! The reenactors in this video wanted to represent the soldiers of the Roman Empire. If you take a look on the pictures out of that era (e.g. the column of Trajan), it can be assumed that the soldiers used quite uniform looking gear.
:-) Now it's correct, thx for the info!
Legion soliders clank like a kitchen and gleam like fresh fallen snow we'll know when their coming
The real ones would have done neither. These are just modern cosplayers.
The fighting was hilarious. The two guys in the front were just stumbling around pushing each other while the javelins just flopped. Then in the background we have a serious fight that even ended in a fake stab
Thanks for this clip. I'd have been interested to see more footage of the javelin throwers in action.
They are called a pilum (singular) pila (plural)

Very glad you like it! The event took place in the archaeological park in Xanten, Germany: www.apx.lvr.de.
+1415Razor thank you for the information. I would like to visit there.
Hi, I do not have time right now to look into the sources, but it was quite common in antiquity that the soldiers of an army looked the same. That was necessary to distinguish between friend and enemy in battle. The Ermine Street Guard gives the same parts of equipment to every member, but this was a mixed presentation with different groups.
Such a funny re-enactment. I was laughing thruout the whole thing. Thanks for the show though!
One is the eagle of the legion, the second one is the face of Vespasian.
Only Italian romans have the necessary discipline to be true legionnaires
They are auxiliaries, soldiers who were no Roman citizens but served in the army. There were special engineers for difficult tasks, but most of the work was done by the legionnaires themselves. You can see pictures of that on Trajan's column.
One week until the next event in Xanten!
what's with all the giggling? The legion never giggles!
Dfthjvf
Punishable by flogging that is how dare they disrespect rome on the battle field
Northerners speaking Latin.... that accent.... it hurts
+Michele Vogliardi “VogliuzGuy” LOL I agreed with you BUT... In the last years of the Roman Empire most of the Legionaries where hired in the Balcans and in modern Germany, Ukraine and Lybia / Algeria (read Wikipedia) expecially for the commanders, the explorators / scouts on horses and archers... SO... The guttural idioms spoken by those former "tribesmen" now enlisted (by necessity and or self will) in the roman legions where often spoken or, if they tried to speak latin, they retained their guttural accent... More or less it still happens when a German speaking person tries to speak a Latin Language like modern Italian or Spanish... The results are almost hilarious... Just like the middle italian trying to speak English...
ALL THE WORLD IS THE SAME PLACE; my friend !!! No matter the time and men...
LOL
What accent? So u can still remember how they talked 2000 years ago, huh?
TribuneTestudo The Italian dialects all come from the Latin language and they all share the same type of pronunciation, also very similar to the spanish one (and spain was the most colonised province by the latins). So the english way of speaking it, is surely the worst.
+Michele “VogliuzGuy” Vogliardi The pronunciation of Latin evolved over the centuries and even evolved in other languages. How can you then say if the "Northern Accent" hurts if you don't even know the real pronunciation of Latin words? Maybe the "Northern" pronunciation is more closer to the Roman pronunciation then the modern Mediteranian? And don't say that the Italian pronunciation has to be the closest one just because of the location of modern Italy. Remember who came when Rome fell and brought their own cultures and languages?
You are right... In the last period most of the major legions and "local" armies were made by Germans, Hun mercenaries, and arabic "auxiliarii" knights... So... The languages spoken into the legions of the last 2 / 3 centuries of the Roman Empire were more similar to a mixture of Latin and Arabic in the Middle East and Latin / Celtic or Latin / Germanic in the northern borders or in the region of the modern Turkey and Crimea... Were the dieing Empire gave birth to the Eastern Empire, which eventually became the Empire of Constantinople and Byzantines... During the middle ages and over !!!
thanks for this video i will use some of this footage for school work , good video btw got my like
Thank you and good luck with your work!

Column of Trajan was built around 108 AD, after defeat of Dacia, which is depicted there. Trajan commanded imperial troops, 150 years after Marian Reforms, so normally, they look very uniform since their gear was provided by state. But apart from roman empire (at that time) and elite king bodyguards (other states), nobody used uniforms or uniform gear, since there was no centralized gear manufacturer.

While they would have no chance on the battlefield, if your first encounter wouldn't be really friendly, Romans were always cunning with adapting foreign technology. So even if you killed thousands of them , someday they will somehow have gunpowder weapons pointed at you. Or something similar. Maybe you don't even fight because you don't have the chance. Killed by some hooker payed by somebody who has the coin and a hard on for boomsticks.
@@PoliticallyDonutTasty Definitely. One thing that sets Romans apart from other ancient civilisations is their sheer will no matter what technology you have you will not scare them, they will find you and they will kill you
