Eccentric bbs can solve the ss on vert dropouts
an answer to rain gathering on glasses.check if you can use rainx. works well on my motorbike crash hat visor.check comparability with type of plastic on glasses.
Where is John?
brilliant ! when ollie said I have my bike on the wall above my fireplace my wifes immediate response ...." he lives on his own then".......
I love that your wife watches GCN with you #relationshipGoals
@@khazza930 she just listens while I watch usually at breakfast
@@nickw6175 this is a life goal now.
@Eclipse Lex: I have turned my old ALAN frame with a semi vertical drop-out into a single speed without chain tensioner. I put a little screw with washers as limit stop for the axle. It works well!
@05:00 For those looking for small-flat bike storage options, check out MTB Hopper and their âSmileâ stand: one of the best options out there. Place your rear wheel in the stand, lift the bike up to vertical and a bit past the apex so that gravity wants to tilt it over. Whip up some hook or strap that you can fasten around your front rim+tyre, attach this to one end of a bit of cord and tie the other end to the leg of the stand. Gravity keeps your front wheel and handlebar straight and the bike stays vertical. Store your bike anywhere - done.
Easier option: rear wheel in the stand, front wheel against the wall. Done.
My noisy bottom bracket turned out to be the seat tube after I followed the GCN tech video on how to diagnose noisy bikes. A bit of grease fixed it right up.
Great to hear you fixed it!
@man0z I've got that too :(
that is a classic I guess. my "bottom bracket" was the saddle - and the previous bottom bracket was a pedal. I love it when noises occur randomly and can not be replicated. Gives you long lasting fun :-/
Mine was that too, now it is the saddle bag for my tools rattling on the seat rails so i tighten it up as much as poss. One of those things.
yes, me too! turned out the seatpost clamp just wasn't tightened enough!
Thanks for the response, Ollie!
I use a simple detailerspray on my Oakley-glasses ( f.e. Spray & Wipe , diluted 1:2 ) to keep a clear vision during wet races and muddy MTB tours.
This is also very helpful while drying your bike or car, a must have for every bike- or carowner!
Car wax or silicone solution such as rainx also works but find wax is great
Thanks for that Ollie! Gona get my detective hat on đ§ and sort this issue out! It does feel like there's play in the cranks!
6:11 Wear a bicycle cap, don't bend the flap or whatever it's called backwards. Will stop most of the rain collecting on glasses. It's rare that it rains horizontally, would have to be pretty windy for that.
A lot of BB creaks are caused by mis-alignment in how the bottom bracket sits in the frame. While adding a grease may mask them short-term, the creaks will inevitable come back.
I love that I can come back to these archived videos and they are all so relevant and helpful. Ollie is great at his technical explanations. Thanks!
Thanks Ollie, will let you know how I get on.
I live in a flat and store my bike on a turbo trainer, great for those days where it's too wet to venture out.
Iâve had creaks from chainring spider as well. Just tightening it up solved it. A 3 min job.
Hello, Love the tools in the back ground. how about giving us a list of all those tools...and thanks for the great videos and helpful tips!
#AskGCNTech, Hi love your show - thanks for all the good advise! I got Ultegra Di2 and my FD6870 broke. The little "arm" which moves the derailleur up and down snapped (the motor is still intact and works). This "arm" seems its made of aluminum. (after 5 years / 3-4000km per year). I didnt have any crash - it just snapped. Now i am thinking of upgrading that FD to Durace. I learnt it is possible to mix Ultegra and Durace - i would do it if i knew whether this part is made of a more durable (better) material - can you help to get this info - THANK YOU
Oakley Nanoclear Hydrophobic Lens Cleaner is great for preventing glare, fog and water build up on cycling glasses. It's quite expensive, but will last ages (both in terms of effectiveness of a single application, and number of applications per "bottle")
Ollie seems to have ignored a question about struggling with cycling glasses in the dark. I guess, back in a day, wearing sunglasses at night was really a problem, as Roberto Benini duly noted in "Night On Earth", but these days photochromic glasses are widely available and they work great.
Excellent show Ollie !
White Industries makes a , White Industries ENO Eccentric Rear Hub to adjust chain tension on a converted single speed also.
Some chains will have a half link available. You then need less movement to achieve acceptable chain tension.

Dilemma. What is the best type of brake surface on a Carbon wheels. A basalt, graphene or the classic alu carb version or there's other option out there? I'm a weekend rider mostly on climbs with max gradient of 18 and I weighed 180lbs. What would be the best braking surface that can support my ride? Thanks
Should I apply a hydrophobic coating to my glasses using a pressure washer? #AskGCNTech
GeebusCripes yes. But stand them up against a really nice stone wall before you do it.
#AskGCNTech The use of compression garments became a popular recovery device around 15 years ago. Was this a fad or are the pros still regularly using compressions garments?
Thumbs up for the disc brake suggestion. replacing discs and not rims is half the point. Other than that I would say doing ride in the rain, and do ride a hilly route in the rain. Apart from those two things my rims never wear, and then rapidly degrade on a wet downhill.

Hi GCN,
I commute on my bike everyday in all conditions, however I have recently had to work my way round my bike and replace the bearings on both wheels (these are sealed) , headset and my freewheel isn't too healthy.
Any advice for keeping the moisture out and prolonging the life of bearings? Replacing them all is becoming an expensive chore :/
Great videos as always, keep it up :)
Sor if there is a olay on my buttom bracket when i move the pedal sude to side. Do i need to reolace the whole buttom bracket or just replace the bearing? I have a square tappered bb. Thank you.
#gcntech Can you explain how you swapped out your BB for a GXP? Did those bearings have the same outer diameter?
#AskGcnTech Global Cycling Network. Iâm enjoying the zwifting . But getting a sore backside what saddle would be best for zwift riding -under ÂŁ40/50(could it be a tt saddle?)
Hi gcn, I've have a shimano SPD SL r540 pedal and somehow broke the ball bearing inside it,ive already replaced it but it doesn't really want to spin freely,so is there any tips or should i just change the cleat pedal?.
Also another question which one is better look keo classic 3 or Shimano spd sl r550?

I'd love to see a pic of the bicycle above the fireplace! Sounds cool. Not sure I could get away with it.
could you help me i still dont know whats wrong with my bottom brakcet my bottom bracket is an octalink and the crank arm always loosen when i ride it ive change the screw of the spindle but it still comes loose when i ride it ive check it if its loose thread but it doesnt seem like thanksss
My bottom bracket decided to give up the ghost 2 days into a tour, in the rain. Sounded like metal death but I was able to clank my way along for 2 days until I could get to a proper bike shop.
I have the correct BB socket and a huge breaker bar, but can't get the capture nut on the bottom bracket to break free. Any suggestions?
i am using a shimano 600 front derailleur from 1989 with new shimano tourney brifters. i have set the limit screws, but the derailleur doesn't reach the limits. i can make it reach the lower limit by adjusting the barrel adjuster, but then it won't reach the high limit and vice versa. could it be that the brifters and derailleur are incompatible and the brifters just don't provide enough travel on the cable? i am also uncertain about how the cable should route around the clamping bolt, maybe i got that wirong? #AskGCNTech
i was haunted in my sleep by the sound of what i thought was my bottom bracket, it came and went and i thought i fixed it a few times until somebody told me it might not be. i eventually found it, the quick release was too tight on my front wheel and that horrible sound was resonating in the forks. i've spent years looking after bikes so i was actually offended to realise it was something so simple. i have similar noises any time headset or hubs start to go, i guess some carbon forks make great amplifiers.
@8:43 I can't find any GCN Aprons on the Shop?
My noisy bottom bracket turned out to be the rear offside drop-out insert - twice. On different bikes!
Hi,
It's often said that the chain and cassette/chainrings wear together, and a worn out chain will quickly wear out a new cassette. Is the inverse also true? That is, will a worn out cassette and chainring quickly wear out a chain?
Cheers,
Henry

Whats the usual life span of an aluminium frame?
I recently reactivated an 1998 aluminium frame for a winter road bike. The frame seems completely fine but Iâve been wondering if thereâs a risk for it to fail catastrophically.
Iâd appreciate the help, keep up the good work!
There is no specific life span for a frame. If you have maintaned it stored in a relatively dry place, there should be no problem.
The frame was maintained quite well. And I know there isnât a life span in the sense that it will break after exactly 10 years or so. But still, the material does fatigue and also the welds are prone to failure. Also in the 90s the manufacturing techniques werenât as advanced as nowadays... so is it still save to use after more then 20 years? But thx for the input, cheers
#AskGCNTech providing that there is room in the frame, can I fit 28mm tyres on a wheelset with a 21mm external width?
Use spit and/or spray wax on the lenses of your glasses to help prevent water build up.
#AskGCNTech is there any way to modify a 10 speed hub to fit a 11 speed cassette?
I have a salsa marrakesh and I want to go to a 1x11 can I do it and would it be worth it?
#AskGCNTech My bike a 2004 Giant OCR-2 with specs that follow. 9 speed TruVativ 52/42/30 front crank, Tiagra brifters & Tiagra front mech, rear mech is shimano 105 with sram 9 speed 12-26 cassette. Would it be worth it to upgrade the entire groupset to a 10 speed Tiagra 4700? front crank 50/34 hollowtech II , Tiagra 4700 front/rear mech, 10 speed rear cassette 11-32? I'm on a tight budget and was thinking about upgrading the drivetrain and hold off buying a new bike for another couple yrs. PS. I ride about 550 miles per month
BB Maint is easy, just not fun or neat. I've used pressure to wash out everything from the BB/BB shell, followed by teflon lube, to try & spray out any dirt. Lastly I use petroleum jelly to re-grease the bearings inside & out. I did this on my Vitus w/PF BB & it still creaked the next day, but soon stopped, I'd never done maint on a PF BB, so this success felt even more like an accomplishment lol.
#AskGCNTech Can I fit a rotor bcd110x4 chainring on a FSA powerbox ?
#AskGCNTech I want to upgrade my 10spd groupo and my heavy Mavic Aksium wheelset to 11spd and potentially a carbon wheelset (or something lighter). Given that both are expensive upgrades, which upgrade would you get first? Can you buy one of them first or you have to buy both at the same time?
Richard M wheelset first, youâll probably notice enough of a difference not to need to upgrade the gruppo, at least for a while.
#AskGCNTech what are pro mechanics washing bikes with because it looks like normal pressure washer but they all have much smaller pistol at the end and i cant find anything like that online
Try rainx on the lenses. Better than losing an eye.
My bottom brackets are just causing a rubbing/vibrating sensation in the pedals. I checked the crank this morning to see if they would move, and they did. Time to go get my BB checked. đ
How about eccentric bottom brackets?
@7:00 RainX ore RainClear. Only on the outside. But yeah best take them of.
How should I care for my chain after I have waxed it?#askgcntech
You could use a different BB if you only used two right sides of the same brand!
Well done Mr. Bridgewood.
Informative, accessible, and presented with confidence. Well done Sir. Well done.
How long should my bottom bracket last?
Had a clicking noise on my bike. Turned out to be the free hub that needed some cleaning and grease.
Very long answer to Italian BB question which didn't really get to the point... Just buy an Italian threaded (also referred to as 70mm) Hollowtech BB, eg. Shimano BBR60 70mm. Before you install, make sure that it has 36x24 printed on the cups to verify that you have the right one.
I wear workshop glasses i dont like tint and the see through fram is great for your visibility its not the best for the sun but for a roadie your heads down so why do you. And that hydrophobic coat is bull like i said i use shop glasses and well yes mud dirt and drops do hit but its all clear!!!! Imagine that
Contact lenses stay put in my eyes suprising Good when riding in the rain.
Hi I want to know what's the best "worth it upgrade" for my bike. #AskGcntechshow
If you live in the UK or northwest US ==> a fender $20
Use rainX it last a few hours for rain
A piece of String?
Try Rain X on the glasses but try it on small area first works great on car windscreens
+1 for Rain X, from a 300,000+ mile motorcyclist
Wouldn't new bearings help
"Rims and brake blocks. I go through them like they're made of soap." Bullshit, you don't wear rims quickly unless you're using metal or stones as brake pads.
I can only imagine this happening on the cheapest ebay carbon rims with equally cheap brake pads. Half convinced it was a planted comment to push the 'buy a new disc brake bike' agenda. Pretty extreme suggestion.
Maybe he justs rides a lot...
Whereâs John? #askgcntech
How do you know? Because it starts to smell like a combination of peanut butter and cheese.
Ollie's a great presenter but it's clear he knows bugger-all about the technical side of bikes. Let have presenters like Canning and Doddy that know their stuff.
Pinarello get Italian BB... because they are... Italian, kind of the same reason they drive on the right side of the road (instead of the wrong side ;) ), eat pasta, pizza and drink coffee that actually tastes good ;)...
Hi, you should be more careful in relation to the bb question... you should not say that you got an italian thread gxp bb but actually an italian thread bb with a gxp adapter. And are you sure the photo you put on the screen when you are referring to the thread of the bsa bb is really of a bsa??? Because I dont, I think that thread in the middle of the bb instead as of in the 'cups' if for adapting to different lengths off axle compartment... its just a constructive comment, not a critic. Cheers!
#AskGCNTech If you cycle fast enough, can you leave the Corona Virus behind?
Pro cycling is being impacted. So if you can ride faster than a pro. Maybeđ€
Wax your lenses or use some of that fancy Rain-x
Instead of that overpriced pole, buy one from Ikea, just standard cloth pole.
If you don't know - you probably don't need to replace BB.
You can ride a bad bottom bracket until it is completely disintegrated. Ask me how I know. Lol (yikes)
Screek screek screek....?
Bottom line: press fit = shit. Purchase a Hambini BB to remedy problem creaks. Manufacturing tolerances for most carbon press fit bb bikes are less than ideal and Hambini BB can be pressed into oval out of tolerance press fit to be more ideal. Best solution get a bike with a BSA or Italian BB
Ask Hambini????????
ask hambini he will sort that shit out
More like âHow do I know my BB is shit?â
Listen to Hambini
No views.... :)
GXP instead of Shimano bottom brackets! Olie knows very little about tech.
