I commute to work using a bicycle. I considered myself a cyclist because I started thinking about how roads, transit, and cities are designed from the perspective of someone who relies on a bicycle to get from point A to point B.
I have learned from this video that I am not a cyclist, I’m a commuter. I follow traffic laws and stop at red lights because I don’t want to die and believe that the rules do, in fact, apply to me as well. I have a bike lock because I only ride my bike for about 30 min a day. I chose my helmet based on durability rather than aerodynamics. I only shelled out enough money for a decent bicycle and not a performance-optimized one. I wear normal clothing while riding my bike because I don’t want to look like a chump in public and at work. Yeah, I’m a commuter, not a cyclist.
Normal clothing? If you don't want to get hit by the police in my country you have to wear light reflecting vests or jackets.
I just always stay on the sidewalk, because sharing a road with cars is basically suicide. Also no helmet: especially in winter, since it doesn't fit over the thick hat.
@@Sasha-zw9ss agree with you, im also not sharing roads vehicles I'm always side walks

You missed one category:
You become a mountain biker and break all your bones in a month.
True mountain bikers never break bones, but break their bikes almost constantly
@@quinnreierson perhaps... I don't break stuff. I just wear stuff out and replace it before it breaks. But breaking stuff and crashing is all part of mountain biking
The true cyclist never breaks his stuff or wears it out because he replaces it regularly with newer better parts and when he finds himself on dirt rides so carefully that grandma can actually walk carefully. While the cyclist is perfectly at home riding on pavement and running red lights in the name of speed, he is absolutely terrified of the loss of traction that comes from turning especially on dirt and with trees in any sort of vicinity.
And the skin on your shins is replaced by scar tissue entirely.
Bikezy
Mountain bikers are not cyclists
In order to be a cyclist you'd actually have to, believe me or not, pedal your bike.
Riding the bus to the top and and then descending, doing ”sick shreds” and opening a beer at the bottom with your mounted beer opener isn't cycling
There is also the "competitive commuter" who times himself on the commute and tries to beat his fastest time, while also willing to commute 30km back and forth every day just for the sake of a challenge.
That was me 24 km one way to work...Every time I went below 1 hour I felt like a Tour de France winner :D
The "troll commuter" packs his paniers with packing peanuts so he can tease new cyclists as they are struggling up hills.
I used to cycle 40 mins across London to get to work early in the morning, and I spent a large part of it on what we called the “tour de commute”.

Unless the wind is slowing me way down, it feels great when I'm cruising, but like I said I'm a commuter and I sometimes use it instead of a car because I don't want to pay $3-4 a gallon just to please all those carbrains who think I'm the entitled one for existing lol

Some of us commuters will go for middle ground between practicality and performance. Lycra might not be everyone's cup of tea but form-fitting "normal" clothes with cycling shorts underneath work almost as well. That, along with a hard-shell aero backpack, and an alloy super bike can make for a pretty speedy commuter setup. Going fast and beating records make A-to-B trips a lot more enjoyable.
As someone who rides their bike regularly for casual rides, transport and the variant called Mountain Biking, I can relate to a lot of this, especially the speed
There's a 3rd category: The ones who say they're just commuting because they're slow, but they try their hardest and race cars or other cyclists on the road, who are not racing them.
So true man
Is this a personal attack?

How pedestrian.

In the Netherlands people see it the opposite, race cyclists are annoying and ignoring the rules to be slightly faster, commuters don't care about how aerodynamic the bike is and don't wear a shitty helmet.

@@Max-ek6nn yeah my mum calls it cheese grater as a way to mock me or piss me off.
Dont worry ur gunna get used to it
I am a commuter, i built my own ebike for transportation, I stop at redlight, keep rigourously the right or use the bike lane and dismount on crosswalks, and yet i face death every time i ride my bike
This is one of the funniest videos I've ever seen. I'm not kidding..
Crush: so, are you a cyclist?
Socially awkward me: no, i'm just a communist.
Sorry brochacho, communism's not aero.
No food = No reddit likes
*socially powerful
I think he meant that he is skinny not because he is a cyclist, but because he's living only off the weekly bread rations that his communist government allows him to have. Wait, am I ruining the joke by explaining it? Oh.... well...

All jokes aside, cycling is what -made- helped me come to terms with my own mortality. Whatever happens, happens, man. I've been cycling for around 17 years and I ain't stopping as long as I have at least one leg. My neighbour, who only has one leg is a commuter.
You don't need legs to cycle
@@zazugee handcycle is actually more AeRo
@@marcoleung368 I’m pretty sure a hand cycle is called a wheelchair lmao, all jokes aside I knew a kid in highschool who did track and had a racing wheelchair which was pretty cool.
Having just 1 leg is super aero
@@1911Zoey having one leg is killing your gains - Jeff cavalier
Every time I rewatch this I notice yet another detail. The text flashing at 1:16 killed me.
This video is so relatable it starts to get personal and I don’t even own a bike
Erin: that’s not vegan
Cyclists: that’s not aero
Lol nice Jubilee referee 😂😂😂
I see you're someone of culture as well
Grian: That's not bro
Nice reference
Real shit; I've been coming back to this video over and over again for the last year and half and EVERY TIME it gets more hard belly laughs than any Netflix comedy special in the last two years. The replay value of your material tops any one else out there schlepping yuks to the masses. I love you. i should probably mention, I'm a cyclist.
Am i in heaven
Oh hey Jesus H Christ, good to see we share an interest in dry humour 👌🏻😅
a youtube verified account for Jesus? Hallelujah!
You sweared Jesus
I love you 😍 Jesus
This is timeless.
I guess I’m a chill commuter, cause sometimes I like to go out and ride and enjoy the outdoors a bit than just sitting watching movies or playing games
At first I thought the title said:
_Casually Explained: Crying_
I mean.. whats the difference?
We really need that one
One day

I thought it said peeing
When you see a mountain bike on the road, you know they're a commuter.
can confirm. Source: am a commuter with a mountain bike
I have a normal bike with mountain tires because of the gravel road I have to cross
Yah can confirm. I'm a commuter with mountain bike. I use it to go to work.
Yeah thats the normal stereotype here in asia.
Thats why i bought a higher travel suspension and knobby tyres to identify myself as a mountain biker.
I even bombarded my laptop with stickers hoping for someone to notice me and ask me for a ride out.
But majority of us is road cyclist so yeah fuck me
I bought a mountain bike because the roads in my city are fucking rocky. Mountain bikes are also future proof. If one day someone invited you to ride on a trail then you can go.
Road bike = only for flat roads
MTB = can go anywhere.
0:27 bruh😂 that seatpost is so high HAHAHA
Matt Stephen’s crash features you deserve my like
“The cyclist has not ridden in any UCI-sanctioned events, but has met several people who have visited Europe”
I’m dying 😭
What is your take on tucson?
that was probably the best line of the video, lmfao
and if from europe, met several ppl who visited australia or what :D
