Guy's, this was the Doobie's first top 40 song. The group did a tremendous amount of touring over the years, and it took a toll of Tom Johnston's voice and overall health. He had to kinda "drop out" at a certain period, and Michael McDonald stepped in and started singing lead on many songs thereafter

The Doobie Brothers are an American rock band that have been around for 5 decades. They covered many genres of music over the years. They had so many great songs such as "What A Fool Believes", "Listen To The Music", "Jesus Is Just Alright", "Long Train Runnin'", "China Grove", "Black Water", "Takin' It To The Streets", "The Doctor", "It Keeps You Runnin'", "Echoes Of Love", "You Belong To Me", "Take Me In Your Arms" etc.

Michael McDonald joined the already successful Doobie Brothers around 1975. He changed their sound from a Rock sound to more of a jazzy blue-eyed Soul sound and had even more success which peaked with the "Minute By Minute" album in 1978-79. They split up in 1982 when McDonald went solo. The pre-McDonald Doobies reformed in 1989 and had success with an album called "Cycles" and the hit song "Doctor". This song was from 1972. Did you get that? Complicated, I know.

In the OG version (the best version IMO) of the band, Tom Johnston did most of the lead singing, although guitarist Pat Simmons also sang lead on some songs (like Black Water, their best song IMO). Johnston became ill and was replaced with Michael McDonald, who introduced a different style to the band. Johnston eventually recovered and rejoined the band, with McDonald remaining, as well.

    • @2olvets443

McDonald left when Pat Simmons left and Tom was already gone. McDonald was not there at anytime Tom was there.
Pat Simmons you berate stating guitarist as he wrote or co-wrote much of the Doobie music. I think Pat left because of McDonald, just didn't say so.
While I like Michael McDonald I did not like what he did as a Doobie, it just was not the Doobie sound. It was McDonalds music not Pat, Tom, or Johns.

Right. The Doobie Bros. were forced to become Michael McDonald's backup band. They lost their uniqueness entirely thru McDonald's usurpation. McDonald is an interloper who successfully ruin the Doobies. And he attempted to force Chicago's sound into his backup band too. Some recording assholes were really on a power trip forcing beloved bands to cater to their prom queen, McDonald's rip-off R&B sound. Nothing McDonald did was unique.
