~Tapping into Your Potential Where Others Saw None~ - Hudba
Tom Johnston is the voice of the greatest Doobie Brothers eras and he wrote almost all the great songs they produced. McDonald was only there because Johnston became very ill for a few years. But Johnston is the "real" voice of the DB. The bass player, Tyron, is one of the GOAT. They are still very active touring except Tyron retired long ago and one passed away. They formed in 1970. Today, they sound phenomenal and their vocals are-off-the-charts great. That "other singer" is Patrick Simmons. The biggest hit the DBs had was called "Black Water" and Simmons wrote and sang it. It was #1 for many months and more than worth doing a reaction video on!
rite on rite on rite on !!!
She means he's the lead singer.
Yeah right on. It pisses me off to see reactions and people are like listen to McDonald, I never knew Michael McDonald, for me Doobie Brothers is Tom Johnston, period.
Love is the best lead.
Thank you for that information I did not know that
If everybody in the world came together and had listened to the music, everyday people, and feeling groovy and dance to the music blaring out, the world would be such a wonderful place. ❤️♥️✌️ Peace to the peaceful.
Yeah you right!
This tune is arguably the Doobie Brothers best song.
It’s mine!
Hey Van, that other singer you were asking about is Patrick Simmons and there is 4 things you had to do to be in the Doobie Brothers. COOK, SING, PLAY AN INSTRUMENT, AND ROLL BIG DOOBIES!! Funny I saw an interview with the band probably 30 years ago and Patrick Simmons mentioned that when they were sitting around trying come up with a new name for the band because the name they were using was already taken, someone said to them, well you guys smoke so many doobies you aught to call yourselves The Doobie Brothers. And the rest is history as they say. Great reaction and great band, I'm glad I've gotten to see them many many times over the years and they never disappoint no matter who is singing. Thanks Brother.
*PEACE*
I went to high school with Pat in San Jose and got to jam with him too!
Our house was across a field from the home of a famous bass player. And every so often the Doobie Brothers would come jam in his backyard. We’d all grab a beverage and sit out side and enjoy the show.
That's what was so great about the 70's. With most bands-most everyone could sing, write songs, play multiple instruments-styles crossed and evolved. Best decade for music.
Best line ever, what the people need is a way to make 'em smile.
Ain't so hard to do if you know how.
1972 was a very good year - this song, Doctor My Eyes by Jackson Browne, Superstition by Stevie Wonder, If You Don't Know Me By Now by Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, Do It Again by Steely Dan, Take It Easy by Eagles, Me and Mrs Jones by Billy Paul Williams, City of New Orleans by Arlo Guthrie, Tumbling Dice by The Rolling Stones, Black and White by Three Dog Night, Without You by Harry Nilsson, The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face by Roberta Flack, American Pie by Don McLean, Lean On Me by Bill Withers, Let's stay Together by Al Green, Oh Girl by The Chi-Lites, Morning Has Broken by Cat Stevens, Hold Your Head Up by Argent, Slippin' Into Darkness by War, Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress by The Hollies, (If Loving You is Wrong) I Don't Want to be Right by Luther Ingram, A Horse With No Name by America, The Way of Love by Cher, Layla by Derek and the Dominos, Where is the Love by Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway, I Can See Clearly Now by Johnny Nash, Vincent by Don McLean, Anticipation by Carly Simon, Day Dreaming by Aretha Franklin, Saturday in the Park by Chicago, Never Been To Spain by Three Dog Night, Use Me by Bill Withers, Hot Rod Lincoln by Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen, Get on the Good Foot by James Brown, Taxi by Harry Chapin, Drowning in the Sea of Love by Joe Simon, Roundabout by Yes, and Freddie's Dead (from Super Fly) by Curtis Mayfield all hit the airwaves and delighted my 21 year old ears - in 1972. 💘✌
The year I was born.
Original Doobie Brothers Jesus is just alright with me another great one old and new Doobie Brothers what terrific
WET WILLIE "KEEP ON SMILIN"..AN UPLIFTING CLASSIC.
Van, hello my friend! Thank you for the shout out! That was so sweet of you! I'm glad you figured out my lead singer separation. 🤣 Sorry if it was confusing at first. I appreciate you going down the DB rabbit hole.
Fun fact, in case you didn't know -
Michael was with Steely Dan before taking lead of the DB. As a solo artist he has written & sang major hits, has some of the best duets out there, and many songs where he does harmonies. Talk about a great career. Sheeeez!
Thank you, Jennifer.
This was, I believe, the first song I ever heard from the Doobie Brothers. I was about 17, I think, and it is still one of my all time favorites..... by anyone !
same here!
The one wearing the feather boa sings lead on "Black Water".That Bass is thumping .Wow.
I am soooo glad they decided to record "Long Train Running", it is my absolute favorite of all the Doobie Bros. songs.Even better than the Michael McDonald songs.I never get tired of listening to that tune .I love it.Reminds me of the sound of the freight trains that run through our little town .They did it right. The harmonica solo is everything. Thanks Tom.Rock &Roll Hall of Fame. Yeah Baby.
MM was my third fave lead vocalist on the Doobies.
McDonald and Johnston get along very well now. Along with their songs, and Patrick Simmon's songs ("Jesus is just alright" and "Blackwater"), the Doobies have a huge and diverse catalog. They are still touring, as all are currently in their 70's. They still play great and still draw big audiences.
Groovin to the Doobies for more than several decades. Black Water and Takin it to the Streets are a couple of good ones.
I firmly believe this is one of the best songs ever. If you don't enjoy this whole track from start to end there is truly something wrong with you as a person. No matter where you came from, what you grew up listening to. If you don't tap your foot to this song, something wrong with you. OK there it is. true.
Every member of the Doobies can sing their ass off. They are all unbelievably talented.
Go ahead and get their greatest hits album...they have many great soulful...crankin...songs :) Love them
Among the GOAT groups of the greatest decade of music...1970s. They are still kickin' it today!! TALENT....is what they all had in the 70s. THIS, IMO, is the Doobie Bros. anthem!
Doobie Bros are always excellent.
May I suggest "Jesus is Just Alright" live from the same era? If you can find the black and white video, it's the best rendition imo.
Live
Love the Doobie brothers
Tom Johnson led Doobie Brothers are the best!! Hands down!! Rock & Roll at it's finest!
TAKE ME IN YOUR ARMS AND ROCK ME WAS ANOTHER REALLY GREAT ONE THAT THEY DID.
The "other" singer is Patrick Simmons, he sings lead on "Dependin' On You" (which you should check out)
Not to mention "Black Water".
You got that right Timothy!!
Patrick Simmons - one of the founders sang the bridge and Tommy Johnston sang lead. Tyran Porter on bass was also a badass singer, but Michael McDonald joined the band when Tommy got sick in the mid-70s but later returned. They are all family!
Check out "Nobody" (video version) by this band. Also should try "South City Midnight Lady" and "Clear as the driven snow." - All great tunes. Also a fun fact......the guitar player in the middle is Jeff (Skunk) Baxter who was with the Doobies in the 70's, Steely Dan in the 80's, and after that worked for the military as a missile defense consultant.
The second singer in this song is Pat Simmons, the only founding member to be in every version of the band. What a song, absolute banger!!!
That is one of the best intros in rock and roll music!!
Such a great catalog of music…. You can’t go wrong with these guys
LFR Family Do listen to the Doobie Brothers (with Michael) "What a fool believes", I think you will like it!
It's sooooooooo Michael
& such a vibe! 🎵❤✌😍
Sing, play, smoke. Hence Doobie Brothers.
The hard hat with the red light that the drummer is wearing is something you could buy at Radio Shack. You could turn it on so the light would spin like a police car.
They all can sing.
Tom Johnston was the early lead singer of the Doobie Brothers, so was Patrick Simmons, Tom got sick had to go to the hospital. They then brought in my man Michael McDonald mid 70's to early 80's! All excellent lead singers, in their own right!✌
Doobie Brothers Black Water is rockin. You'll love it
The music of my childhood. Makes my heart sing that another generation is discovering it. Rock on \m/\m/
First saw them play live in Bakersfield, California in 1975. ZZ TOP was also onstage. Great concert. Doobies hit it out of the park.
I went my 1st concert at the New Haven Colosseum in 1978 and saw them. I was 11 years old. Talk about doobies hehe. There was beachballs frisbees, and a whole bunch of pot. God my parents must have laughed their asses off when I asked what that smell was. There were joints passed in front of me,next to me and behind me. For being soo young I never forgot that concert. Btw im for the original Doobie Brothers before McDonald
"You Have To Be Able To Do 3 Things"...NO,, 4 Things,, You Got To Be Able To Roll A Doobie Too!!..Lol.
Brings back so many memories!!!
This was a time when ppl had talent
A lot of music acts could not just sing
They played guitars, piano & etc
And could also dance too
We need talent like this today
Not all this trash today
AGREED! There are a few modern gems but I find myself immersed in 20th Century music.
Yup....I just wrote similar comment before reading yours.
Today, it's just an " artist", as they call them. No band with them. Just recorded sounds mixed in a studio of ACTUAL TALENT playing instruments.
Yet, they hand these people multi- millions. As long as they sell out and push the satanic, over sexualized, violent agenda for the industry controllers.
I mean....if there werent the folks that mix the background sounds in the studio for "rappers", it would just be some person talking, rhyming.....no singing, no instrument skills, likely no song writing skills and def no music writing skills.
Just rhyming...in their talking voice.
Sorry....I do enjoy some more talented "rap artists". Entertaining
But.....there's no way their talent levels match their ridiculous payouts.
Period.
Bands like DB simply love making and sharing music. Thats their oxygen-of sorts.
Musicians
God...I miss the 70's
Another GREAT band from the 70's from the SF Bay Area
Doobie Brothers
Tower of Power
Santana
and than later Journey
Wooooohwoooo listen to the music
Something you youngin's have to understand is back then all we had was an album cover and the record inside. By this I'm saying we were into it for the music and the music only, unless you were lucky enough or lived close enough to an actual live concert. We didn't even have MTV yet. It was a different time, but it was a great time and some of the best musicians and bands came out of the late 60's and throughout the 70's. So many of the bands then played with a lot more soul than any other time in history.
That is Patrick Simmons in white suit he is has been the longest member of the Doobie brothers 40 + years he comes from a bluegrass background you can here a lot of banjo tracks in there songs 😊
The brother is killing it on the bass.
"...and one of those three things is COOKING. Cause I'm not cooking every night!" Holy crap. About fell out of my seat laughing.
Everyone was multi-talented back in the day
Tommy Johnston was one of the original members and when he left the band Michael McDonald joined the group. Tommy Sang the earlier songs and Michael McDonald picked up when he left.
Love this era of the Doobie Bros. Saw them around 1973, when "China Grove" came out, at Carnegie Hall in NYC.
Gotta have Doobie brothers 💯. And Steelie Dan💯
Possibly the most rockin' DB song...Without You.
I KEEP FORGETTING - MICHAEL MCDONALD. So much soul in that one from Michael.
The helmet the drummer had on could be bought back in the 70's at Radio Shack.
I think they had 3.
1: Yellow Construction helmet
2: Red Fire Chief helmet
3: Green Military Police helmet
And yes, The Lights did work/rotate (2 C Cell?)
I don't know if you are familiar with the show "What's Happening!!" but the Doobie Brothers had a guest appearance on a 2 part episode. You should check it out if you can find it.
You know DANG WELL without even seeing they got a brother on the bass for real!
That’s my man Skunk Baxter. Guitarist supreme and Special Warfare expert.
My former boss is married to his ex wife and mother of his son Fender.
We actually got invited to Fender’s wedding but I couldn’t swing it.
His ex used to babysit for our kid for free!
Saw these guys (with TJ) three times in the early to mid seventies. My folks were fans and took us. Those were very, very high quality shows. Great positive vibes!
This song is on a playlist I have that I call "break glass when suicidal." It keeps me going.
Love the band and love this song
ROCK AND ROLL!!
Those guys were all in the band at one time
Excellent job with the list, Jennifer! Can't wait for Van to continue the dive!
Great harmony 🥰
Tiran Porter is a fantastic bass player who, like many bass players, is under-celebrated. Here, he takes a simple inverted root-5 baseline and makes it unique and playful. I have the transcription of the syncopated bass fill he plays at 6:02 of this video tattooed on my left bicep.
A CLASSIC MUST HEAR,, FEEL GOOD SMOOTH SOUL GROOVE,, THE BLACKBYRDS "WALKING IN RHYTHM"
They're all equally talented! The real genius of this song was incorporating the banjo. That just put the cherry on top of this song. It brings back wonderful memories of the 70's. God I miss the 70's!!
The "Doobie" Brothers blazed one??? You must be a Sherlock Holmes with your deduction skills
Funny you should notice the microphones. You can see the progression of innovation in sound technology. And yes, most bands of the time could all play and sing.
Music is the doctor is a gem
Absolutely classic song - like an archetype of the joy of music. Feels like a gift from the great beyond to hear this.
Van, these can be confusing my friend.
You reacted to "It Keeps You Runnin".
🌟I recommended "Long Train Runnin" which is one of their most popular songs. It was the DB first top 10 hit & has a killer guitar riff.🌟
I listened to tjid on my room
I used to see the bass player Tiran Porter all of the time when I lived in Los Gatos California at Petrinis Market getting meat at the meat counter. We were always the only brothas in the store😆
I blazed one too
Of course they blazed one before the song 🎵They were the Doobie Brothers, think 🤔about it. 🤜🤛💯😉
Van
One of the guitarist, long blonde haired wearing dark sunglasses, Jeff "Skunk" Baxter has another career besides making music. His other career is working with the military as a consultant. Jeff gotten a series of security clearances for classified work. Some of his work are extremely sensitive aka national security sensitive. Jeff fell in this second career by accident.
The soundtrack to my childhood!!!
They're so great in concert 🤩
Tom Johnston was the original lead singer then Michael stepped in when Tom has health problems in the late 70’s early 80’s.
You should check out this video they released last year. It’s with Tom and guest Peter Frampton. Let it Rain - czcams.com/video/T7Dm77k-tZo/video.html
The Doobie Brother's had killer harmonies. You cannot listen to this song and not feel happy. Love it!
♥️ This is a classic!!
So good love this song
By far my favorite Doobie Brothers lineup/era. This was rock, great rock and roll.
Appears the "Doobie Brothers" have a fitting name you say?! Oh, and seems to me, they not the only ones doing "doobies", based on your own behavior during your reaction. I am in Canada eh, it's legal here, I usually enjoy a couple myself watching reactions. I seem to appreciate them more. Have a rainbow day, stay safe and well.
Minute-by-minute is another great one Kenny Loggins with Michael McDonald Kenny Loggins wrote that song a tribute to his father asking him to hang on while he was very sick and keep fighting it's called This Is It
Van, for a great performance by the Doobie Brothers, you need to check out their tune called DANGEROUS at the Rocking Down the Highway Wildlife Concert. Patrick Simmons sings lead on this one. What's great is three guitarists play two guitars each. BANGER!!!! Thanks for your entertaining reactions as always. They had lots of hits before Michael McDonald took over for Tom Johnston. Janet from Louisiana ☮🖤🤘
Van, the 1st requirement to be in the Doobie Brothers is the ability to roll a good doobie....sheesh, priorities.
Tom Johnston is lead here, second danger on this is Pat Simmons. Pat was lead on Black Water
Doobie Brothers are one of the best groups of all time. I grew up listening to them in the 1970's. I know for a fact they were blazing up. Their name Doobie is a slang term for a joint in the 1970's. Black Water is one of my favorites too
8th Avenue Shuffle and Black Water are great and don’t forget Michael McDonald on the Steely Dan Tracks!
Nice on doing this song it’s a really good song by them I’m glad you enjoyed em
Patrick Simmons is the other lead singer. He's the lead singer on Black Water
The 70's was full of true MUSICIANS. That's why the music was so great. And yes they were no doubt firing up the DOOBIE...BROTHERS
This is my favorite song of theirs. You can't help but feel good listening to it. Seen them live at the Oregon Garden in 2008 I think can't remember the year for sure, but it was an amazing show.
I'm sure they blazed more than one lmao 🤣😅😅
The Doobie brothers are a perfect combination of funk and rock.. I grew up listening to them, they are one of my favorite bands (Jennifer's list) she forgot one of my favorite songs which is called "What a Fool Believes"
You're the first person who I've ever seen get this right. This tune, with the highly syncopated steel drum ostinato pattern on the verse and the slick banjo comp on the choruses is more of a funk groove than rock or anything else! Very good, you're astute.
@AgentSmith-ck9xi thank you very much!
That helmet on the Drummer was freaking crazy. It don't matter what you wear when your music is pure FIRE.
By far, the best Doobies vocalist. McDonald cut his teeth on backing vocals for years. I like his voice )as a solo artist). Like many of my favorite 70’s/80’s groups, the label made them sellouts for the 💰💰💰
