      Tom and Michael wrote most of the band's hits, but, honestly, Patrick wrote a lot of their most interesting songs. I'd add "Toulouse Street," "Neal's Fandango," "I Cheat the Hangman," and "Daughters of the Sea" to that list as well (though Nick has already heard the latter 2 in previous marathons).

    Nick and Lex, definitely go see the Doobie Brothers if you have the chance
    The Doobies pre-Michael McDonald made great songs like this, one of the best songs of the 70s

    THIS is the Doobie bros.. The bass Tiran Porter puts on a master class on how to add enough bounce to a blues/southern rocks song to make you dance but avoid any movement at all towards pop. If you isolate the bass it is a very sophisticated, with very little repetition. When I listen it can be hard to tell what notes are being played and which are implied (filled in by your mind)..

  • @user-hx8fz7xt7v
    @user-hx8fz7xt7v Před 3 měsíci +3

    Tiran Porter was the best bassist for the Doobies. I always liked his style. Sad that he and John Hartman never rejoined them.

  • @ComeOnIsSuchAJoy
    @ComeOnIsSuchAJoy Před 3 měsíci +3

    Actually, Michael McDonald *did* re-join the band 5 years ago; the band now consists of him and guitarists Tom Johnston (who wrote and sang this song), Patrick Simmons (who wrote and sang "Black Water" -- and is the only one who's been in the band since the beginning), and John McFee. Alas, bass player Tiran Porter is no longer with them, and all of their drummers from back in the day have now died.

Later on after the departure of Johnston, Michael McDonald joined the band and was the main singer then (What a fool believes etc). Actually so simple. PS in this song it is Tom Johnston, but in the short bridge part it is Pat Simmons !!!

    Most of us old-timers usually "prefer" the older versions of artists like Elton John, Chicago, Yes and The Doobie Brothers. I'm not sure why that is. I've always felt a good song is a good song. Doesn't matter who, when or what. Maybe if we got to experience it all for the first time, at the same time, like you get to, we might lean more towards your way of thinking. It's not that the older stuff isn't as good. It's just that the earlier stuff has a special place in my heart. But one thing you don't get to experience as much as we do is the nostalgic effect. these older songs really put me back in the day. Ah, memories! Try "Another Park, Another Sunday" from The Doobie Brothers. Or "Jesus Is Just Alright". A great cover by them.

    Great reaction go see them for sure I’m Pretty sure Michael is touring with them this summer. He just had a memoir come out called What a fool Believes. He toured with them last summer. You will hear Tom Johnston, Patrick Simmons and Michael McDonald will all sing they are the main singers and songwriters for the Doobies. All eras of the Doobies are good they are the same band they just evolved and explored and they are all still soul brothers and friends so to all the people that only identify with one era of the band let it go, it’s been 40 years. Thanks Lex I think Tom Johnston has always been Mr. Music and let’s all just Listen to the Music. Peace and Love. ❤️

    That "Phaser" effect was accomplished by physically touching on the the tape reels and slightly slowing it down with a little varying pressure throwing it out of "phase". Itchy Coo Park by the Small Faces has a nice example of that trick also. Electronic Phase Shifters were invented to create that sound easier and on anything.

    Tom Johnston was a good singer/songwriter. Funny that Jeff Baxter was one of the guitar players with early SD. Micheal McDonald was back up singer for the Dan and many other acts. Later in the 70's Johnston had left the Doobies and went on his own. Meanwhile, Jeff Baxter and MM joined the Doobies and changed that band a lot. I think some of MM songs were SD influenced. This year, McDonald, Johnston and Simmons (original Doobie) announced they are touring together. Steve Winwood is joining them. That will be a GREAT show. So much talent. BTW, one of my favorite early Doobie's song is 'Black Water', very cool tune. Great stuff N+L. Always watching..

    This song was a monster hit when it was first released. You couldn’t turn on the radio without hearing it. It was the song that put them on the map.
    It’s kind of strange hearing it now, as I never noticed the banjo in the background before this. Another really cool track that features banjo and is also very atypical for the band that wrote it is “Journey of the Sorcerer” by The Eagles.

    The early version of The Doobie Brothers were the best especially with Tom on guitar. We all love Michael McDonald but before he got there it was more rock and guitar oriented. As a cannabis connoisseur, you can't beat that name either. Michael McDonald has been back with the Doobie Brothers the last several years. Check the ad and the promo picture, and if he's in the picture he will be there. They just played in Austin in February, and he's in the band. I've seen the Doobies many times dating back to the 70s, but the last time I saw them in 2019 was the best of all. ABSOLUTELY go see the Doobie Brothers - with or without MM. They are as great either version, and i've seen them both with and without and MM solo with is own band. So DEF get Tix!

    First Doobie Brothers song I ever heard, and at the time it seemed unlike anything else on the radio. But I now realize it had a sort of George Harrison (Phil Spector) "Wall of Sound" quality.

    Their hits are great. The Doobies are one of those bands with high quality deep cuts, a small sampling:
    Eyes of Silver
    Another Park, Another Sunday
    Sweet Maxine
    I Cheat the Hangman
    Texas Lullaby
    Neil's Fandango (tasty instrumental)
    And that's just the tip of the iceberg of deep cuts

    Michael M toured with Doobie Brothers last year so it is possible he is still doing it this year! We saw them! Just check their site!

    This song was the reason that I picked up the guitar close to 50 years ago. Ironically, I still can't play it worth a darn. 😁 But the Doobie Brothers have always brought a level of musicianship to their music that few bands have ever been able to match. I think I've seen them at least three times in concert over the years, the most recent a year or two with Michael McDonald. I personally prefer the material they did with Tom Johnston, but I still like the blue-eyed soul of MM.

  • @MrRondonmon

    I saw them in a Miss. Casino in 2009, didn't expect much tbh, they sounded the same as in the 70s to a tee. Watch the Good Morning America show in like 2016 where they played *China Grove* to an in house mini concert, they were all over 60-65 and the kids were laughing at their moms and dads for being excited to listen to these old men, then they rocked the house down , the kids loved it. If you get a chance to see them, they are still very good, unlike most old bands. P.S. they were much better with Johnston as the lead singer. More hits by far. This is my Fav. Doobie Bro. song.

    1 other clip - the Doobies played a venue called Chateau Liberte in the Santa Cruz mountains - pretty much 1/2 between San Jose and Santa Cruz which are about 20 miles apart. The Tubes, members of the Grateful Dead, Moby Grape, Sons of Champlin, Hot Tuna & more. You can see the scene in the early 1970s in the San Francisco Bay Area, even includes the infamous Zig Zag man painted on the bottom of the pool. czcams.com/video/TiQwv-_906s/video.htmlsi=dNZyQtyvQpLgK1__

    Amigo, “Doobie Bros.” are from San José, Calif. (Silicon Valley) The S.F. Bay Area. Both Tom Johnston and Pat Simmons met at San José State University. “Creedance Clearwater Revival” are from The S.F. Bay Area also, El Cerrito ( outside Oakland). Check out “Tower of Power” ( What is Hip, You’re Still a Young Man, So Very Hard to Go) from Oakland, CA…….SanJoséBob

    Michael McDonald also played with Steely Dan. Check out the live album The New York Rock and Soul Review. It features McDonald, Donald Fagen, Boz Skaggs, Phoebe Snow, Eddie and David Brigati and Charles Brown. Lots of talent on display.

    Go to the show if you're able to. Even if McDonald's not gonna be there, it'll be a great show. Every song from the pre McDonald Doobie Brothers albums are all hits IMO. They did one concert where they played every song from the Toulouse Street and Captain and Me albums.

    Definitely worthwhile seeing them. See you there, and maybe at Fiddler's Green on July 31st to see Neil Young. I wore the grooves out on The Captain and Me and Stampede in high school.

    This track is one of the greatest crossover hits of the 1970s - Popular on FM rock radio, in discos and in the charts. With its great rhytmic playing, its soaring harmonies and the different genres (those rock guitar licks at the end for example) peeking through occasionally, I personally consider it one of the masterpieces of guitar bands in any era. I hope you were hearing it a lot better than we were here, cos it was way down in your mix and sounded very flattened - but maybe that's what CZcams did in the upload process.

    I think the only original member in the Doobie Brothers is Patrick Simmons, who is one of the guitarists and was the writer and singer in Black Water. Another of his, which I really love, and I can guarantee you two will as well is called South City Midnight Lady. Please check this one out! It's so soothing.

    The Doobies like all bands do encores, but when they perform Listen to the Music that is the end of the show. They have ended all of their shows with that song for at least 20-30 years.
    Michael McDonald is touring with them again this year.
