Oh my how I love this movie! The other versions are good, but to me this one is the best! Paul Leni had such visual imagination! So sad that he died not long thereafter.

Oh, a chance to see this one on the big screen would be AMAZING!

I never considered how direct a path it is from Cat and the Canary to Knives Out. It's true though. 10/10 fricheks

I loved the Bob remake. First time watching the original. Thank you.

Wow, what a great piece! I didn't see C&tC until a couple of years ago. I was pleasantly surprised - as you indicate, it is a very dynamic, engaging film. What a treasure in your family's legacy. Kudos.

Why does every film that is my favorite, it has to be a Universal Picture!

I enjoy this film a lot. I got the beautiful release by Eureka Entertainment. Absolutely stunning to watch this film on Blu Ray. Paul Leni is also one of the most underrated classic horror directors. He has such a unique visual style.

The Cat and the Canary is a decent enough film, but a little too "silenty" for me to really love it. It just has too many of the cliche silent movie mystery tropes, and they're fun enough, but I definitely feel that The Old Dark House is the superior of the two films. The Man Who Laughs is definitely Paul Leni's better film, though it's a bit like comparing apples and oranges. The best part of The Last Warning is seeing the Phantom opera house set being used again 😆

I wish the 1930 versions were found.

Similar storyline to 'The Mystery of the 13th Guest' (1943).

Having watched these original version of the cat and the canary as well as the man who laughs and the last warning I think the director had a great sense of being able to both terrify as well as making an audience laugh at the horror the way James Whale would do in the old dark house The invisible Man and especially Bride of Frankenstein. I do know that when universal was wanting to do Dracula they had wanted to get him and Conrad Veidt back together to do it but sadly Leni passed away from blood poisoning and Veidt went back to Germany but this film is a great film very much an inspiration for Scooby-Doo in the fact that it's never genuine supernatural it's all criminals scaring people away for money

I would love to see an alternate universe where Dracula stars Conrad Veidt directed by Paul Leni!

@@AntoniaCarlotta I absolutely agree or even an alternate version where Lon Chaney senior lived long enough to do it

@@AntoniaCarlotta one thing I would be interested about seeing Chaney Sr as Dracula is how close to the novel would he make the character look. Would he have the white hair the white mustache maybe the hairy palms? Because that's how he did with the hunchback and the Phantom going back to the novel to look as close as possible to what the author imagined

'The 1931, English Dracula'??? But that, was made in Hollywood. You meant; it's the 1931 'AMERICAN', Dracula. Gertrude Astor?? Any relation, to Mary?? I have this film, as part of my collection, but only seen it once. Also have, the 1939 version. Wasn't aware, of the 1978 version. Thanks, Carlotta😉!! And thank you, for turning this on, to the present generation👍!!!

I meant "English-language Dracula" as opposed to the 1931 Spanish-language Dracula that was made at Universal at exactly the same time.

Lovelovelove this film! Adore Laura Laplante, & Paul Leni was a fabulous director. I have Waxworks, & it's super! Just want more of these artists & this time period, that's for sure! 🎞
