I've been a silent fan for years , I've read several books on the harsh transition of some stars , but also the musicians in the orchestra pit were out of work almost overnight . At the height of the depression. Love your channel, and you being able to share that knowledge from you hearing first person from relatives. Thanx

Such a sea change, from silent to sound. A whole new world of opportunity being revealed, almost overnight. And a real blessing for monster movies, especially. There is a great deal of discussion of the actor & director difficulties Antonia discussed here. But not much reflection on how we could now hear sound effects, along with dialogue. So here's to every bump, creaky door/floor/coffin lid, drip, gasp, howl, lurid laugh, rainstorm, & scream heard in our favourite genre of all! 😒 ⚰ 💧 🤯 🐺 😆 🌩 😱

Very sorry to hear this. A fine film historian. His commentaries grace the extras on SO many movies which I own, always insightful & valuable. R. I. P. 🎬 📚 🎞

Hello Antonia, FYI, 'Melody of Love' (1928) is not just Universal's first all talking picture, but also the very first all talking sound-on-film feature ever released. Universal borrowed Fox's Movietone equipment for this film and released it 2-1/2 months before Fox released their first all talking sound-on-film feature "In Old Arizona". This is a quote from the entry I submitted to the IMDB a few years ago. ---Ken Horan

You ought to check it out if you haven’t seen it yet. For the most part it is better in that it’s better shot and could do more than the English version could because of censors. Carlos Villar doesn’t compare to Lugosi, but he does a serviceable job. Lupita Tovar as Eva (Mina) is smoking on screen. Oddly, the last surviving stars of the Dracula movies were Tovar and Carla Laemmle who both lived past a hundred. Carla plays the same character, delivering the same lines but in Spanish.

I think the loss of revenue from playing for silent films would not have really impacted musicians that severely. There were many, many other opportunities for them, after all. From band concerts in public parks to symphony orchestras, from burlesque to vaudeville, from dancehalls to nightclubs, from fancy restaurants to event halls with wedding receptions, there was really still quite a lot of demand for skilled musicians, on all instruments. Not many cinemas were large enough for anything like an orchestra. Most only had an upright piano, with perhaps a violinist. These all lost their motion picture house jobs, but they had other places to go. . .including the movie studios, where they could appear in films, in scenes set in one of those places, especially for musicals! And the rise of radio & record-producing facilities gave them more options, to boot!
