    I liked your review! I agree that it's overwhelming with all the different themes and it's definitely very ambitious, but I think overall it worked well. The writing style is lovely, isn't it? :)

    I've had this book on loan from the library for over a week now and haven't gotten around to it. But your review is making me want to pick it up ASAP. I'm so intrigued by the first chapter because I know Regan said to reread it after finishing the book. Very interesting! Great review :]

    This has been on my tbr forever! Loved your review, and the comparison to Burial Rites, which I loved, definitely kicked this one up a notch for me!

    Great review! When I read this I definitely expected it to be more about the cabinet. I kind of wish it had played a bigger role, since it doesn't feel like it was crucial to the plot (at least as far as I remember).

    • @ChapterStackss

    Now I will definitely pick this book up. I have it on my Kindle and I already started it and I enjoyed it, but so many things came up in the meantime that I couldn't continue. But I really want to buy this so I can hold it in my hands, I feel like I would enjoy it more if I had it in physical form. Your review was great as always, I can't wait to dive into it as soon as I can. :) And a poster of the cover would definitely sell very well, I would use it as wallpaper all around my house probably, hahahaha

    You forgot to say that there is no reason to have a miniaturist line in the book in a first place)) And the first chapter does not explain anything))) Yeah, many people say just your words : reread it, whole new prospective, blah-bla, but none could actually explain what they see in that chapter, what was the role of the miniaturist and what would be changed at all if there wasn't one)))) Well, apart from the name of this book of course)))

    loved the book so much I had to go to Amsterdam last Weekend to see the really stunning Piece of art which is the dolls house of Petronella Oortman !! And Amsterdam is a great City. The dolls house impressed me so much more than the nightwatch by Rembrandt... ;o))

    I have this on my TBR, but always pass it by because it doesn't have the greatest reviews on Goodreads (currently has a 3.58…not terrible, but not what I consider high either). Many people over there say it's over-hyped. Why do you think so many people just think it's so-so?

    • @ChapterStackss
      @ChapterStackss  Před 9 lety +10

      I tend to read goodreads reviews but intentionally pay ZERO attention to the overall rating. I've found that books targeted for a younger audience are always rated quite high no matter how terrible it is while those for an older audience are a but lower. I think that's always important to keep in mind.
      I read through some reviews, and some people seem to be quite annoyed that the book isn't as focused on The Miniaturist him/herself as they would like it to be. This didn't bother me, but I could see how that could be disappointing.

  • @dorkabrain
    @dorkabrain Před 9 lety +2

    I read this book a few weeks ago and while I liked her writing style, I ended up feeling kind of disappointed with it overall. I thought the slow buildup to big events ratio felt off and thought the explanation about the miniaturist was underwhelming and vague.

    • @ChapterStackss
      @ChapterStackss  Před 9 lety +1

      It certainly was a bit vague, but I enjoyed that we didn't get all the answers. How I could certainly see how that would frustrate other people.

    I loved this book! The mix of Dutch historie and mysterie is delightful. Being Dutch myself made me want to pick up a copy at my library. Verry well written by someone who isn't Dutch her self 👏 In Amsterdam there was a lot more freedom than people think in that time. But on the other hand a lot of things were forbidden. It was a time of change and wealth. I think it's pretty accurate. Dutch are stubborn people 😜
    Women had a lot more power than you would think.

  • @CB-jx9pw

    I seem to be one of the few people who thought that the book wasn't very well written at all; the language seemed really simplistic and two-dimensional to me...😩

  • @annrene89
    @annrene89 Před 8 lety +1

    Love your review but I feel like it was liberal for some places in the world at that time but not for Amsterdam. I feel like their beliefs were more conservative and more liberal in different ways just like that is true for different places in the world today. Still love the review nice to see people reviewing books that are more popular outside the booktube bubble. Also I know this is really late. LOL
