- The Historian \ Elizabeth Costova
In 1467, one of the world's cruelest rulers, Vlad III of Wallachia, died and so his reign of terror was finally brought to an end. Or did it?
Strange books which appear across the world lead people, among them Paul the Historian, to believe that the inspiration for the world's most famous vampire might still be alive and the world is still in danger.

Good review! It's not so much a book about vampires as a historical novel about the author's beloved Balkans and the Ottoman Empire. The author's mastery and enthusiasm for the subject saturates the narrative and makes it a compelling read. The pacing is excellent and keeps the reader engaged. The writing quality is quite high so it's not a thow-away junk novel like Da Vinci Code. It's a book to be read multiple times.
Just finished this myself and didn't know what to make of it. You summed up many of the pro-cons of the book quite well. Honestly, though, the ending felt incredibly underwhelming. Especially the motive for the disappearance of Rossi...it felt as though the author didn't know how to end the book and just slapped something together.
I actually had to research my video in order to reply because I didn't remember the book all that well - which kind of says enough... But overall I am still glad I gave it a chance and read it.
I actually quite love this book and I heard they were considering doing a movie adaptation. If so I hope they split it. Father's past story first and then his daughter's story as a sequel.
The Historian, is very well written and intriguing. It is full of atmosphere and real historical places in Eastern Europe. Incidentally, vampires do 'exist'.
“People looking for people looking for people…”. Awesome description lol. Great review!
Read this book in high school. I can say it really spurred my interest in history, especially with all the detail the author goes into for the different environments. I remember being so into the book that I couldn't tell what was actual history and what was fiction.
I’m reading this book for the second time. I forgot how amazing it was.
Really there was only one incident of that in Turkey, and the point of that was that the one had connections which led to connection last vice versa. Then the other 'coincidences' are nudged on clues by the villains, they really pushed the story forward.
Loved Gabriel knight
A great review- thank you!!!🌹
I just finished the book and I think there are several gaps in the story. But I have only a question which is..
When they are in his second tomb and Helen appears and she... right before that, he speaks in a " language " that only the daughter understands. They never explained that. Also when in Rossi's last diaries he doesn't mention that weird voice or anything. What. Is. That. About. I'm so confused.
You certainly copied and pasted this in a lot of places! Did you find the answer to your question?
@@Gmackematix I just get very invested in books and DEMAND answers so I don't go crazy hahaha I will be starting my own CZcams channel to dive deep in the details that many booktubers and blogs don't address. And to answer your question, I got some educated guesses from clueless people just like myself but nothing solid. She must have been from the same bloodline as him, but that's just speculation (sadly)
Have a nice day!
P.S. The bit about Goulash is really amusing.
I'm on chapter 8 of this book brought it yesterday my friend has read it twice and recommended it to me
And how is it so far? For me, it took me a while to get into it.
Your my kinda gal! I love interesting stuff like that from history as well! 💀 🧛🏻♂️ 🧛🏻 😈🤘🏻
