You should read and do a review of On The Beach by Nevil Shute. I'm curious to hear your opinion of it. I think it's one of the most underrated novels ever.
@@normasouthwood3182 'On the Beach' was a best-seller when it was first published in the late 1950s, when I was a young boy living in Montreal. From the 1950s until 1962 the world was tense with repeated threats of nuclear war between Russia and the USA, and The Cuba Missile Crisis in 1961 dominated the world news because humanity was a hairs-breadth away from a nuclear holocaust. Even people in Montreal were building fallout shelters underground in their backyards. As long as nuclear weapons are allowed in our world, people will continue to read On The Beach.
Hmmm, I've never heard of this one. But you know, it's all a matter of taste. I'm sure some people really genuinely loved it and others felt they "had to" because it's so famous. Sometimes you don't even realize yourself how much you're swayed by others' opinions and you really believe it's your own opinion.
I hated Wicked! Everyone was fawning over the book because of the stage show so I read it when I was 13-14 (it was recommended for that age group around me).
I read it after high school, I was probably 19 or 20. And the musical is great, I loved it! Same with Legally Blonde, the movie was silly but the musical was amazing.
Those are definitely some swell premises. Unfortunate that they disappointed @TheBookWorm. Sort of the opposite of how almost any book can be made to sound like crap in a one-line summary: *_Moby Dick._* Whaling ship captain is out for revenge on the whale that bit off his leg. *_The Old Man and the Sea._* A fisherman makes a series of bad choices, nearly dies and loses a good catch. *_Crime and Punishment._* This guy kills this old lady. Later, he turns himself in.

It's a matter of opinion, and I would love to hear about your course, what is it about, horror novels in general or something more specific? I took a course in uni (English Lit) about horror novels and it was one of my favorite ones in university.
Graduate creative writing courses on Writing Horror, but we also cover the history and contemporary state of the genre. Prose fiction, mainly, but within the context of the non-print narrative cultures feed it. @@thebookworm6554
It might be legal to think The Ruins isn't an incredible work of horror, but what's legal isn't necessarily right. As for opinions, I'm with Plato. In the empty space between knowledge and ignorance, everyone is welcome to have a picnic. But it's a take that won't last longer than a sandwich if you don't have a case to pack it in.

Oh! I read that book as a teen. Brilliant, in fact Nevile Shute is one of my favourite writers. A Town Like Alice is another of his masterpieces.

I didn't like Bird Box either. I also read Daphne which I didn't like. I think I don't like Josh Malerman's writing...😊

Inevitable 😂 ugh I hate when books don’t live up to their potential! I skipped over The Ruins part as it is on my TBR and I wanna go in unbiased 😅
The Ruins is my favorite horror novel of all time. And I teach graduate courses on the subject! Don’t believe her. The book is incredible

I don't mean reads aren't subjective. But the difference between opinion and subjective case-making is a whole other conversation.
I liked the movie The Ruins. Though I saw it when I was a teen, so idk if holds up
