Mister Ed is an American television situation comedy produced by Filmways[1] that first aired in syndication from January 5 to July 2, 1961, and then on CBS from October 1, 1961, to February 6, 1966. The show's title character is a talking horse, originally appearing in short stories by Walter R. Brooks. Mister Ed is one of the few series to debut in syndication and be picked up by a major network for prime time.
The show in effect had two leads operating as a comedy team. The title role of Mister Ed, a talking palomino, was played by gelding Bamboo Harvester and voiced by former Western film actor Allan Lane. The role of Ed's owner, a genial but somewhat klutzy architect named Wilbur Post, was played by Alan Young. Many of the program's gags follow from Mister Ed's tendency to talk only to Wilbur, his skills as a troublemaker, and his precociously human-like behaviour that far exceeds anything those around Wilbur expect of a horse.
A running gag is other characters hearing Wilbur talking to Ed and asking to whom he is talking. Another running gag centers on Wilbur being accident prone and inadvertently causing harm to himself and others. According to the show's producer, Arthur Lubin, Young was chosen for the lead role because he "just seemed like the sort of guy a horse would talk to".

I was born the next month after Mister Ed first premiered. I remember watching as a child in front of a big concell tv, and really believing this horse could really talk! Sadly did I realize that I was growing up when the magic of believing was taken away by growing up, but I still choose to believe that this magnificent beautiful horse did talk! Still a show I'll treasure for the rest of my life!

I loved watching Mr. Ed as a kid. I remember Nick at Nite used to air the episodes at 8pm on weekdays, and I couldn't get enough of the show back then. Sad how much time passes.

I remember watching Mister Ed reruns in the 60s and 70s and to me the theme song was one of the all time best. I read an opera singer recorded the song in Italy and it was so bad that the producers were looking for a new theme song. But Jay Livingston, who co-wrote the theme with Ray Evans, recorded his own version and as the saying goes the rest is history,

Originally, George Burns was going to produce Mister Ed through his McCadden Production company. But the company filed for chapter 7 and Burns sold his assets of his production company, along with his several key excutives including Al Simon to Filmways.

The theme's vocalist was Jay Livingston himself; the story was....the producers had originally hired an Italian opera singer (!!) to record the theme, but it just didn't work out. Jay, who sang the theme for a "demo recording", did the final version.

No. They may have been heading in that direction, but in the middle of season 6 CBS got a new President who cancelled the show even though it was still highly rated. The cast was in the middle of rehearsal when they were told. He wanted CBS to start phasing out their rural/country shows to focus on more urban/city based shows to attract young hip viewers. By 1971 with the debut of All In The Family all the shows like Beverly Hillbillies, Petticoat Junction, Green Acres etc....were cancelled one by one.

A horse is a horse, of course, of course
And nothing can fart like a horse, of course
Unless of course the farting horse is the famous Mister Ed
Go right to the source and smell the horse
He'll give you the odor of your remorse
The methane comes out with such force
    Smell that Mister Ed!
People eat and eat all week, and hold it in all day
But Mister Ed will never fart, unless he is filled with hay
A horse is a horse, of course, of course
And nothing can fart like a horse, of course
You never heard of a farting horse? ....
    Well listen to this......(phhhttt!!)
    THAT WAS MISTER ED!!

Mr. Ed was smarter than Wilbur. If it were up to Ed, Wilbur would have had a better barn. Connie Hines was very pretty. Wilbur in real life lived to 99.
