- New York City, especially Manhattan, is very walkable and you can easily live without a car. Basically the only 15 minute city in the United States.
There are many great neighborhoods in NYC like Soho, the Lower East side, the Upper East Side, or the Financial District.
But a neighborhood in New York City that has remained relatively unchanged since WW2 is the Upper West Side.
With Timeless architecture sandwiched between two iconic scenic parks, Central Park and Riverside Park. You can’t go wrong.
So the next time you travel to New York City, stay in the best neighborhood - The Upper West Side. And from there you can explore all the other New York City Attractions and places to go.

My favorite thing about living in the Upper West Side is how many things are going on all at once. Broadway, possibly the most iconic and busy street in all of New York right next to West End Avenue, a picturesque and quiet street with great architecture. Then Amsterdam and Columbus, with countless restaurants and shops. Then Central Park West with some of the most famous buildings in all of New York.
Exactly. It has everything sandwiched in between 2 giant beautiful parks. Chefs kiss.
I just moved here from Kentucky. Gimmie some fun places to visit/good restaurants pls
@@icespeaker81 South Upper West Side: lincoln center, playa bettys. upper east side: any of the many bodegas that make food on the grill in front of you, and the met. soho: prince street pizza, katz delicatessen, some of the high end shops. greenwich village - washington square park, the friends apartment. west village/meatpacking district: chrome hearts store (1 of 2 in the city), hectors diner, the soho house, outside dining area on 14th and 9th (great music there during the afternoon). chelsea: comme des garcons store (most beautiful store ive ever been to, like a golden palace of clothes), chelsea piers (for fitness), ny burger company (pricey but really good burgers), gotham pizza, hauser and wirth (world famous art gallery), the high line, the beautiful cobblestone streets of 14th st. Ive lived in the city all my life, but I don't go many other places than those neighborhoods so enjoy!
my fav neighborhood
Greenwich village is probably my favorite neighborhood
That would probably be my 2nd fav but as I get older - having the parks a stones throw away is priceless.
Mine too.
My father had a "bachelor's pad" on the West 70th and Columbus after my folks divorced, so I was exposed to the wonders of the UWS every other weekend as a respite from a Lawn Guyland upbringing. Although it is more upscale now, its essence is the same.
Wow seriously? That must have been an interesting experience. I am jealous of anyone who has lived in the UWS, even if it was just every other weekend.
Being born in the upper west side is a blessing
I was born and raised in the Upper West Side. I love this neighborhood. All walks of life call this place home. Some parts have an "elegant" feel to it and some have a "gritty" feel to it, but it's all beautiful to me, Its very "New York". Riverside Park is my favorite park in the city (maybe I'm just bias lol).
As lame as it may sound - I am beyond jealous that you had that experience. I never officially lived in NYC but I’m not giving up hope yet. You described the UWS perfectly, no surprise! Riverside Park is one of my favorite places in the whole world, let alone NYC. Thank you for sharing.
Zabars!!! I love whitefish salad on a bagel. That's heaven
With a chocolate babka to wash it down!
My Mother grew up in NYC. I went for the first time when I was 10. All I could do was constantly look up all the time since I had never seen buildings that tall
Haha I did the same thing when I was 22! Can’t imagine at 10 yrs old - must have felt like a different planet.
About a week ago we've been there my wife and I. Upperwest side Beacon Hotel. Such a great spot. about 30+min distance to Central park or Time Square. Fell in love with New York, have seen much but also haven't seen much. it's def. on my revisit list.
It’s easy to fall in love with Big Apple. It only gets better and better each time you visit. Especially if you find the neighborhoods and hidden enclaves that speak to your soul.
I have spent nearly two months visiting NYC, just loved it... wanted so much to live there... I called it Disneyland for adults. This was in the 80s and 90s . Now.... not worth the hotel bill.
And at the end of this day you've spent $17,423. 😂
Lol yeah can’t do this too often!
Ive never been to New York so I don't have first hand experience but the numbers don't lie. NYC is the premiere city on the continent for car free and urbanist living by a wide margin. It's truely unique in terms of urban design and urban form
I just couldn’t help myself. I love that place. I’m sad I never got the chance to actually live there but luckily we have friends/family nearby so we can visit quite often. You gotta check it out!
H&H Bagle, Big Nick's, still there?
I recently spent a year living with my daughter on W 86th right next to Central Park. I love this neighborhood and regularly go back to visit. It is a bit of a cheat, but the MET and the Guggenheim are right across the park. For me they were easily walking distance.
Edit: If you get a chance, walk around the reservoir at dusk (especially after a good meal). You can see the Midtown skyline and both the East Side and West Side buildings just as Midtown begins to light up. It is a fantastic view.
Thank you for the pro tip! Hopefully I’ll get a chance to live there with my family one day as well.
My 23 year old niece lives in the upper west side, she is a bohemian that works with art galleries, a brilliant young woman. She will move to Europe at some point in time, and when I go to a “ better life”, she and her brother will inherit my coffee exporting business in Latin America, lucky they are, since I am a lifelong bachelor at 65, a bohemian and true bon vivant at heart…🫵🥂🤣
While in college we'd catch great music acts for a few bucks at Ungano's 69 &bdway
barney greengrass
Next time!
I lived in NYC, moved to Philly. Thought it would be the same thing but smaller version. I was so wrong, rampant NIMBYism and cars parked on the sidewalk. I’m in Fishtown, I’m looking to move back to NYC to the UWS. I hope be back in NYC closer to fam. Philly sucks.
People point to New York as crime-ridden, but Philadelphia is much more dangerous. It was a major city when I was a kid. Now it's a minor town. Not even Ben Franklin lives there anymore.
👍

Arguable if the UWS is "the best" neighborhood in NYC. What you described can be had in most of Manhattan districts. And what does it mean to be "the best"? Yes, the UWS is fantastic. I think there is no argument that it is better than the UES. But not sure if it's "better" than the Villages or SOHO. It all depends which stage of life you're in. If you're in your 20s, Lower Manhattan is going to be much better. If you're in your 60s, the UWS will be preferable. Also, Murray's Bagels is as good as it gets.
Since Mrs Astor died, taking Society with her, the Upper East Side of Manhattan has lost much of it's ritzy cache. The consensus has been for some time that Downtown is now the it place to be. Downtown is where it's at.The best neighborhood money can buy is Tribeca. John Kennedy lived there. Taylor Swift owns a house there (Old-Lady Madonna lives on the UES. Joy Behar lives on the UWS). Some folks still like Soho, which was white-hot Avant Garde in the 70s. The Art Scene has since moved to Chelsea, leaving Soho a crowded tourist trap of irrelevant retail stores. A nicer version of Soho has developed in the old Meat-Packing District at West 14th Street. Prime spots of interest to tourists is Chelsea Market, an indoor food mall, owned by Google, across the street. Next block is the High Line, an elevated highway park, where Oreos began a hundred years ago. New to the area is the Whitney Museum of American Art, which has been held ransom on the Upper East Side since day one, despite the fact that Mrs Whitney always wanted it downtown in Greenwich Village, the home of many important artists in the 20s and 30s who were her "friends." She was their patron/saint. The Whitney is a segue between Chelsea, Meat Market, and the Far West Village, which is mainly old and historic single-family houses in a picturesque neighborhood, situated on the Hudson River, where cargo like women and slaves were delivered. The West Village in the 50s and 60s was he home turf of the Stonewall crowd, who liked it's cheap rents and charming street life. The West Village Historic District is still immensely charming, but there ain't nothing cheap about these rents. The most Old World neighborhood in New York is now full of zillionaire immigres from old worlds everywhere. They don't even live here, but Real Estate in New York is something nice to collect.
New York Magazine called it the dullest neighborhood in New York. No contest.

You have got to be kidding! NYC has turned into one gigantic sewer. So glad I left it in my rear view mirror not long ago.
The Far West Village is 6 times more bustling than the West Side Uptown.
