    I just finished changing out the slave cylinder and this video really helped. One suggestion though would be to fully thread the high pressure line with your fingers first before securing the slave cylinder with any of the three bolts. Once it’s fully threaded in (using just your fingers), then secure it with the bolts. So in summary, fish the slave cylinder up in position, then attach the little transmission bracket to the slave cylinder, then fully thread the high pressure line in by hand, then make sure the plunger is seated correctly in the clutch housing (I was able to do this easily by feel alone), then attach the other end of the little bracket to the transmission, then attach the slave cylinder to the transmission using the two bolts. This whole process is extremely tricky and I needed several attempts to get it in. This specific process was the only one that worked for me. If you are having trouble reinstalling it, try these steps exactly.

    Hi Franny, me again. I have decided to make a complete overhaul kit (Clutch Savers kit) for our slaves. I have completed the design of all 9 of the inside seals and o-rings and will be releasing it to the public in about 3 or 4 weeks. I have shipped one kit to a friend in Australia who is going to install the kit with engine out. I am testing it here in the USA on my car with the engine still in. We are road testing before we release it to everyone else.

  • @scotdoc
    @scotdoc Před 4 lety

    Update - new slave installed. I had to remove starter motor in the end. Made it so much easier. Also, having a drift or Allen key with a very slightly smaller diameter than the mounting bolts helps massively when trying to push slave cylinder against the plunger, into position. You can push it right through to keep slave cylinder in position whilst you insert & tighten the other bolt. I replaced reservoir too. Just need to bleed now. This is one of the nastiest jobs I have ever done on a car. My arms are bruised & scratched all over. Massive sense of satisfaction though. Your video was so useful. Thanks again.

      Haha, I know. Since my first 33, I've owned 4 other ones like the 155 and 146. At the moment I drive a 2008 GT 2.0 JTS. Fabulous, gorgeous car with a 185 HP engine (some little adjustments done with chiptuning), very comfortable, excellent handling. It consumes rather much fuel in city traffic and oil wich is 10W60. But she never lets me down. Autobahn or curvy Alpine roads in winter, she always performs. My friend in Loveland Co. owns a classic GTA. Next year I'm planning to visit him, he also owns a classic 911.

      @@Brera011, Ugh! - I had a 1985 red Alfa 33QV way back in 1988. Sadly, it was a real dog with bad synchro wear from previous owner, which caused a main gearbox bearing to fail. (I still have it as my $1000 desk paper weight!). It had terrible Italian electrical issues with headlights, door locks and window motors failing. It's diff was far to low for highway cruising, so drank lots of gas, but went like stink, and sounded awesome for a little 1500. The car found me a wife, so all was not lost! Pretty common issue on these cars... had to replace it twice when I had mine (2002 996 Twin Turbo)... crazy fast car. Took it to Sebring and had a blast there. First time it needed replacement it was still under warranty so the dealer took care of it... second time I ended doing it myself. I remember buying the spare parts almost a year before I needed it... it is that common.
    Until then, I never had any use for a crows foot wrench... bought a set when I had to do this job.
    I do not have the space you have in your garage, that would be so nice. Mine has normal height, so I ended up getting a Mini-Max lift that fits in a garage with a 8' ceiling. But at least I am not on my back on the floor. Ohh, and a Motive Bleeder is awesome!! Must have in any garage.
    I sold the car to a good friend and during his ownership he had to replace it again... I just recommended him to take it to the dealer... I was not looking forward to doing this task again, lol.

    From the color of the old fluid a yearly or so flush can't hurt. My 87 911 turns the fluid dark even with new master and slave, yet the fluid out of the calipers is clear. I know its brake fluid not hydraulic fluid but....

    Clutch Savers from rennfix.com are now available for rebuilding the oem slave cylinder. The kit replaces all o-rings and seals and has been material selected and dimensioned to out perform oem which is especially needed in cold climates when brand new freshly install oem slaves have been reported to leak due to seal shrinkage in the cold weather.

    When I did the Boxster clutch I also miss aligned the rod.
    Everything all back together, stepped on the clutch and it hit the floor.
    It pushed the rod right out of the slave cylinder spraying fluid inside the gearbox!
    Luckily most of the fluid ended up hitting the throw out arm and everything worked out fine.
    Plenty of bad language on that day.

  • @andrewthompsonuk1
    @andrewthompsonuk1 Před 5 lety +1

    I found the slave cylinder hard enough when I did the clutch on my 997 S. I did the same thing and missed the fork. Then I found I could not get the bolts in. It was as if the rod was too long. After a few days away from the car I realized the new clutch was a self adjusting type. This meant I needed to loosen off the bell housing again and pull it back about 10mm so I could get the slave cylinder bolts in, then very very carefully do what I have been told never to do and pull it in with the bolts.
    I ended up spending more time on the slave than it took to remove and reinstall the clutch and gearbox.
    Finally I had a huge issue bleeding before I realized the instructions wanted a power bleeder for a good reason. Normal bleeding is a complete east of time.

      The one to really watch is the hose off the pump on the right rear of the engine bay. That is what blows most commonly. It is the hottest. Ours split for connector to connector and dumped 2/3s of the coolant in a few seconds. They aren't that expensive and both rear hoses can be replaced pretty quickly (minus the coolant). I'll be shooting a video on a radiator replacement (yup, the left sprung a slow leak) and I'll show a cool tool I have to ensure you don't get any air pockets when refilling. Might be a couple weeks. Fantastic step by step. The disconcerting part for me is how many times you have had to replace this part. Whats the standard failure rate for these? Is there a more heavy duty upgrade replacement over OEM? Would love to own a 996 Turbo car but if this is a really common issue to have to repair I may reconsider possible ownership of one. I would intend to really drive the car. Not daily mind you but more than just a weekend type vehicle. Thank you for the detailed information on this repair.

    • @HeidiandFranny
      @HeidiandFranny  Před 5 lety

      Hi Tim. This is Heidi. I believe I can answer this but Franny can always add to it as well. In the case of our car, it was already replaced once by the dealership and then just now. Our mileage is just about 65K on our turbo. Many people don’t like this PITA process, so they either use the Porsche GT2 part or an aftermarket one. The problem with this solution (for us) is that there is no assist with those parts which make it VERY stiff. Franny drove a friend’s turbo a few years back (he sold it), and she did not like the way it felt at all. We have two options. We could put the other one in 30K miles or this one again. I figure that will be in about ten years with the mileage. Who knows if we will still have this car by then anyhow. Now that Franny has done it, she feels she could do the replacement again too with less hassle and headache. I drove the car briefly last night. It feels very nice again. When it was failing before, it was somewhat difficult to put the clutch down. Heidi

      It is waaay better... There was an annoying notch in the throw before and it made uptake difficult to manage. It is much smoother (and lighter) than it was before. If I had known what I do now, it wouldn't be that horrible... Just watch the power steering fluid... I think we may have developed a small coolant leak from the front left radiator area. I need to get to that, but my guess is that when the PS reservoir overflowed up front, it made its way to the front coolant hose and, well, hosed it ;) Need to get to that when I finish up the Speedster. • @HeidiandFranny
      @HeidiandFranny  Před 3 lety

      Probably not... A bad clutch cylinder will bey notchy and then eventually leak fluid. If the clutch pedal is really stiff a day or two after driving the car (before starting it) the accumulator is bad. I think actual slipping is more the clutch disk unfortunately. I think there is an access port you can check the thickness of the plate. That is what I would look at.

And while you are at the subject, There where reasons WV (and Porsche) left the air-cooling, wasn't that reliable among things. • @HeidiandFranny
      @HeidiandFranny  Před 5 lety +1

      David Bronicki the turbos do tend to be more, but our other Porsche’s have not been money pits at all. Now, granted, having Franny do the work helps but you are correct about the solid German engineering, which is why we own four Porsches. As far as the VW, we would eventually like a classic one. At some point. Heidi

    • @andrewthompsonuk1
      @andrewthompsonuk1 Před 5 lety

      Part of the reason for this is the age of the cars themselves. People who would never dream of owing a 15 year old car buy an old Porsche and expect it to be as reliable as a newer car.
      Today's modern common cars will be just as expensive to maintain if they make it to 15 years.

    • @davidbronicki5024
      @davidbronicki5024 Před 5 lety

      Well that's why Germany Lost World War II they over-engineered all their stuff to the point where they couldn't build them fast enough, and they fell behind with quantity versus quality and they needed highly-trained technicians to maintain their apparatus and they were losing men to fill those technical jobs.I still think it's that way. You ladies must have a lot of disposable income if you can afford all them Porsches and BMWs, Mini and with insurance, and tax, license plates , upkeep ,parts. that must cost a hefty bundle. I imagine that Denver area is not a cheap place to live.
