  • Col. Thomas Monstery taught a easy to learn method of stick fighting. As a fencing master he is well educated in weapon based martial arts as well as in boxing. While in Great Britain Edward Barton Write will introduce Bartitsu including the French la canne of Pierre Vigney, Monstery was active in Chicago and NY city to teach the noble society to defend themselves in the street.
    In this video we will have a closer look at at his self defence system with the cane for Gentlemen living in the USA.
    You want to improve your Cane Fu, want to be a cane master? Try the western way of martial art.
    We will start at the beginning with pre exercises for strong wrists and fast strikes: Moulinetts as they were taught in sabre. We will show the easy kind of striking and the parrying.
    When you look at these style of self-defence think about the movie Gangs of NY with Leonardo DiCaprio by Martin Scorsese and the rough city even if its a bit earlier in the century.
    We train at Mispeldorn in Aachen Germany HEMA or historical fencing according to F.C. Christmann. His style with the sabre is also based on the same striking mechanics so we feel very comfortable to show you Monstery method. Also we train bastone Italiano - traditional Italian stick fighting from Genova, which bridges the gap to the cane completely.

    We are one of the finest clubs for smallsword and sabre if you look for a different kind of weapon in HEMA. Maybe you are interested to join our study group for cane, staff and Savate or just come for a visit!
    If you are interested in Monsterys method, I took my knowledge from this book edited by Ben Miller:
    Self-Defense for Gentlemen and Ladies: A Nineteenth-Century Treatise on Boxing, Kicking, Grappling, and Fencing with the Cane and Quarterstaff

    Love to see your Cane Vids! I can't carry a sword down the street, but the Cane I can take anywhere. I love European martial arts and their conversion to cane self defense, So Thanks! More More More!

    Thank you! You are able to give life to Monstery's system 👍 I'll be waiting for the next instalment 😀 Also I would like to recommend, again, The "Walking Stick Method of Self-Defence" by an officer of the Indian Police (available in PDF, and kindle) 🤔 , more complete than the little from Colonel Monstery, it uses speed and a very light cane. Finally and again you have very strong 💪 wrists, I have a hickory stick and is too heavy for me. I made with a foil, a "trainer" very light, and beautifully balanced, that I use. Cheers

      Thank you very much 🙏
      Yes it was fun working the Monstery cane out (again) I also learned something in the meantime 😉
      At some point we will give the 'walkings stick method [...]' a go also. It is a way more complete, but one has to advocate, that this is an actual book for training useage and the Monstery stuff is from two articles from a newspaper, so it is more am advertisment to find New students.
      Btw. The 'Indian book' uses knobsticks with the heavy end on the striking end, the dynamic it different and the impact also 😎

    Very, very good 👍 point the knob in the cane changes the physics of the movement and also the characteristics of the impact, albeit in figure 4 (and others) a same thickness stick is used for practice. I suppose a bit of leeway is allowed 😁 Keep the good stuff coming😀. Cheers

    Great video! Now I understand where you got your wrist training from. but I completely disagree with how it is used according to the instructions. I'm not criticizing you, you're showing everything perfectly. this method leads to increased fatigue and loss of speed. also, a strong opponent's entry will destroy such actions, it has been proven in practice. it is impossible to move the wrist of a person standing strongly on his feet. it is more rational to do all the same actions by rotating in the shoulder, but this requires longer training and therefore is perhaps less rational in terms of spending time and money on training. therefore, the shoulder rotation method has not been proposed for study.

    • @OliverJanseps
      @OliverJanseps  Před 2 měsíci

      To be honest, this method would also be not my favorite when it comes to a real encounter.
      And I can add other masters of the cane claimed the same and go for more powerfull strikes from the shoulders and body.
      We discover at the moment different fighting styles and methodes for the cane, just to spread some forgotten knowledge and learn some new.
      So thank you for your kind words and to give you an example that we could also do different, you can have a look at this 😉

    I like learning history but this seems from a fencing mentality. In actual street attacks, your attackers will not be swinging with wrist strength only. So learn the basic, then modify it for more modern strikes.

    • @OliverJanseps
      @OliverJanseps  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Yes, this is totalky from a fencing mentality. As he wrote by himself it is taken from the sabre. But this is true for nearly all the old methods as they were taught by fencing masters.
      My Maestro for traditional Italian cane btw. Taught also fast rapid strikes at the (knife) hand by mulinello.
      But yes, today noone will attack you by wrist strikes 🙃
      What do you mean with 'modern' strikes? Or do you just mean strikes used in modern times?

    • @canadafree2087
      @canadafree2087 Před 6 měsíci +1

      I meant with modern power using shoulders and if more skilled, body weight too.@@OliverJanseps

    • @OliverJanseps
      @OliverJanseps  Před 6 měsíci

      @@canadafree2087 ah, I see.
      One also find 'full' strikes in other okd systems. The wrist moulinettes are more the exeption from the rule. But this is what makes it interesting.
      We will have a look on other methodes in the future, maybe there is something that fits your image of a usefull method for today more 🙂
      Let me know! But first we have to finish the final part...

  • @xscale
    @xscale Před 5 dny

    Real fights happen at boxing range, not fencing range. As in boxing, power comes ground up, feet to hips to hands, engaging core. Think Tyson. The cane is a force multiplier via three weapons - two ends and middle. When you swing it or twirl it as done here you lose access to at least two of those weapons, and in reality likely all three.
    Best strategy is always to throw down your wallet and run for your life, but second best is to grip a cane with two hands and apply its weapons to the attacker's body, never their head. Both because heads are smaller targets, and because a head-shot with a cane will cause the attacker injuries that will cause you to spend a fortune on a lawyer. Literally thousands of times more money than you have in your wallet.

    • @OliverJanseps
      @OliverJanseps  Před 5 dny +1

      @@xscale you mix up a lot of stuff in your comment and I would agree on all you say on modern self defense!
      On the other hand you look at weapon fighting from an unarmed basis, the stuff I reffer about does it the other way around.
      But at the end there are more then one way and more then one truth!
