    My philosophy in life is to only fight people who freeze in place after I parry their attacks so that I can poorly attempt to garotte them. Also I only fight people who can be defeated by slightly mussing their hair with the end of my cane.

      What i hate about the modern bartisu practitioners is that they throw away the spirit of the art in order to conform to a foolish vision based on pictures in books and obscure references. The original art was based on a mixture of jujitsu bare-knuckle boxing and savate. Two of these are living martial arts and the other is a reconstructed form that is being used today. ( also worth noting that boxing which predated Queensbury rules actually allowed grappling it's why they took the weird pugilistic stance) in essence what it should be is modren mma informed by Krav Maga Street savvy with perhaps some cain and stick drills. Instead it's a bunch of Steampunk posers peddling bullshido that would get you killed/badly hurt were it ever applied in the real world.

    " I've done martial arts and I could easily defeat this, so it's rubbish..."
    This is a martial art for people not inclined to do a lot of training but to have some skill defeating muggers.
    That's what it was designed for.
    Any mugger who has done years of martial arts- like some of the critics assert they have done- would be a problem for anyone.
    There appears to be little perspective on CZcams...

      There is no such martial art that requires little training and is effective. You can train more intensely, pay more attention, and you learn faster. But there is no such thing as a low maintenance reliable martial art. That's called bogus.
      But sure, go ahead. Make my day. Try this on the street. I guarantee you will need your front pair of teeth replaced with fake ones.
      A "mugger" deosn't have to have extensive martial arts knowledge to punch you in the face while you are trying to use a technique you never trained live, with full force. and is too complicated to perform anyway.

    • @mrspeigle1
      @mrspeigle1 Před 5 lety +1

      Boxing Jiu-Jitsu and savate, these are not light training martial arts.
      I highly doubt that bartisus's creators would be paging through old texts trying to recreate poses and stances while wearing clothing from 100 years ago. If you want to bring this art into the Modern Age ditch the steampunk motif where Modern street clothes and practice modern mixed martial arts with an emphasis on Street self defense rather than prize fighting. Good self defense instruction should include extensive time in a classroom environment studying psychology self defense law reviewing CCTV footage of actual attacks and receiving guest lectures from police officers, Firearms instructors, and paramedics.

    As with every martial art. No matter how well practiced and good you are. If someone pulls a knife, do your best to get away from the situation first. Engage only if there is no other option. Unless the attacker is an absolute complete imbecile, you will get cut or stabbed.

    the duck and swing... would not work... he would've swatted you in the face with his own cane... it is a mistake I make alot in saber fencing... my instructor lifts his saber or I manage to flick his saber up and I duck and attack I immediately get hit in the helmet right after... so I have my doubts based on first hand experience about that one... the rest was very interesting seems simple... not too tiring and effective... the hits seem to be pointing towards disorienting and unbalance your opponent rather than to take him down with one single move like other martial arts...

    • @bartitsuantagonisticsforum5322
      @bartitsuantagonisticsforum5322  Před 7 lety +4

      I agree totally that the duck and swing technique is not the best. Personally I have never managed to make it work in sparring without, as you said, getting a back fist to the face for my efforts. It is true I might trade a knee cap for a back fist to the face ... but I would rather not when there are so many other less painful options. The reason it is in there is that it is lifted directly from the pages of the Strand magazine and so is considered a 'classic' Bartitsu move. In truth I think it is more advertising than effective ... which means it looks cool and is an audience pleaser when doing a demo.
      Also thank you for noting the focus of the style being more about defence and control than attack. Bartitsu was never designed to deliver one punch knock outs but rather to safely defend at range till you can get in and take your aggressor down. For modern self defence this principle works well when more violent martial arts can land you in a lot of legal bother.

      Jon Jones uses a kick like this and he is probably the most skilled/powerful fighter in the world. He never really damages someone with it. He uses it more to have people focus on another level of kicks and keep people at range. Specially since he has (one of) the longest reach in the UFC. And he also never does that jump kick at the end, that only works if you fight statues or something.

    this is al good and well except for the knife part
    pls people when facing someone with a knife just run the chance of winning this fight is just not woth the risk.
    assuming the parry works he needs to yank the guy throat so hard he is dazzed and i dont see that happening meanwhile the guy just needs to flip his knife in his hand (not really just tested it real quick with myself and ur hand turns far enough) and start stabbing like crazy in your side or the leg.
    not trying to offend this art i think its really cool for the rest im just verry skeptical about any martial art when it comes to ways of beating people who wield knives
    sorry for my crummy english^^

      dont mean cutting aint dangerous but if you are wearing clothes this can possibly protect you from cuts (depending on what type of clothes and mostly how much layers) getting stabbed not so much xs

    • @jimenezap09
      @jimenezap09 Před 6 lety

      Running away from an enemy with a knife is practical if there is a big gap or distance between the attacker and the defender. But if the gap/distance is too slim, turning around to run away is not advisable especially with a very skilled and determined attacker. Best to parry and hurt the attacker to a point which he cannot chase you then that's your chance to run and get away.

    • @mrspeigle1
      @mrspeigle1 Před 5 lety +1

      While I agree that deescalation escape and evasion should be your number one priority if your opponent is using a knife(assuming that you dont have a equalizer) this is not always an option or tactically sound( if I happen to be recovering from knee surgery the likelihood of my being able to outrun anyone faster than say grandpa with a Walker is pretty dam slim. Trying would likely result in a knife in the back, this is why you should practice anti knife techniques. Hint: Any instructor who is not using white shirts black Sharpies and intensive sparing against live opponents is likely a bullshit artist.

    I get offended when someone puts things like that in same sentence like kick boxing, jjc, judo anything real. People work hard and bleed to be good in combat skills and this guys are just acting and talking.. Its more like watching movie than train..Those people just want to use this movie skill to earn some money and i dont mind that, it can be nice for social elements but dont put it in same basket as real martial arts..

    • @bartitsuantagonisticsforum5322
      @bartitsuantagonisticsforum5322  Před 7 lety +13

      Thank you for taking the time to watch the video and comment. It is great to know there are people out there training as hard as you are and I encourage you whole heartedly to keep up the good work. Anyone who trains hard, sweats and bleeds to be good at what they do deserves respect and martial arts is no different.
      I also appologise for offending you although I am not quiet sure how I have. If the complaint is around the blending of martial arts I can see why a traditionalist could get upset. Bartitsu very much falls into the same camp as Jeet Kun Do and the modern mixed martial art movement with its disregard for tradition for traditions sake and a focus on simply what works for the person in the current situation.
      I would also point out this was in no way a training session or indicative of how we train. This was a demonstration designed to explain the system to non martial artists and the general public; always strikes me as odd that people cannot apprecaite the difference between these two things.
      Anyway, thank you for your comments and I will be sure to consider them as I go forward with my training. If it would be possible to link me to some of the training videos you have on line I would love to see what you do and learn more about your practices. Hopefully I will be able to incorporate some of the principles, techniques and teachings into my own practice and make my martial arts training even more real.

      You need to do more research on the history of bartitsu. It isn't some movie fighting style that Sherlock Holmes came up with. It was mentioned in a Holmes story incorrectly as "baritsu" which is the lone connection to the fighting style. From what I know, it was originally intended to be a fighting style that an "everyman" could use to protect himself. Hence the usage of umbrellas, walking sticks and pocket squares. Edward William Barton-Wright is credited for inventing it.

      still useful today actually, Bartitsu is a mixed martial art that takes things from Savate (French Kickboxing) and Jiu-jitsu, two martial arts that are used in MMA today.
      BUT it is more useful when fighting people without alot of training than say, a martial artist. it is a self defence martial art NOT a military one like Krav Maga, systema or Kali which allow you to fend off people with actual martial arts training.
      To be clear, bartitsu is a light version of Defendu (very VERY light version) a British military martial art taught to Office of Strategic Services agents and Allied troops in World War 2.
