Coopers Stout with Steeped Chocolate Malt Grains | Kit to Glass

- In this video I brew a Coopers Stout homebrew extract beer kit. In addition to the beer kit, I add a tin of Morgan's roasted dark liquid malt extract and some steeped chocolate malt grains. I also upgrade the yeast from the kit yeast to a Crossmyloof 04 English Ale yeast. This is a simple method of improving an extract beer kit with grain additions and it really makes a difference to the overall flavour and finished product.
Recipe:
1 x Coopers Stout
1 x Morgan's Dark Roasted Liquid Malt extract (un-hopped) - any other brand with do just as good.
300g Chocolate Malt Grains, Steeped at 80 degrees C for 30 mins and strained.
1 Packed of Crossmyloof 04 English Ale Yeast.
Love the expression on your face when tasting this one , have brewed stouts before but never with chocolate malt , but will definitely try this one when the weather warms up next year .👍
I gave this a go but added fuggle hops and slightly less malt and it turned out really well. I'm hoping to give it another go soon before the kiwi winter
i watch all your videos and really enjoy them, you bring a lot to the brewing community.i have been brewing for 6 or 7 years and do it all ,all grain..extract and partial mash, still learning and enjoying it all...Cheers from Canada..it's a big country 😎🤠
Thanks a lot. Comments like this make it all worthwhile. Cheers!
Just watching your video after your comment on mine. Beer looks a cracker. Plenty of body and flavour. Happy days. Cheers mate 🍻
Thanks mate. I've stashed up a few bottles for Christmas as it just got better over time. Cracking beer this one. Cheers!
@@G-townbrewer nice one. That'll go down well, a good Winter warmer. Cheers
This is my next brew because of this video! Making it for Christmas Day. Should be ready hopefully
Hope it turns out well. Cheers 🍻
Looks lovely. I have a Coopers Irish Stout with Dark Rock Milk Stout enhancer conditioning as we speak which I cannot wait to try.
It really is. The Irish stout sounds good, but I'm lactose intolerant so Milk stout is off the menu for me unfortunately. Enjoy though!
Fantastic, I’m about to make the same, I’ve got the Irish stout kit and I’m using a Nottingham yeast + Morgan’s dark malt tin and 300g chocolate malt. great review. Cheers
Thanks mate. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did. It's a cracking beer. Cheers!
Thanks for posting these videos, it's the sort of brewing I've been doing and you have some really good ideas. I brewed a Cooper's stout and used stout yeast, malt extract and Golding's hops. I probably added too much malt extract as the initial taste was a bit overpowering for my tastes but apart from that it was bloody good, it too poured like sump oil. Look forward to seeing your next brew.
Thanks for the comment. More brews coming soon, including an easy all extract brew from scratch.
Another good video, don't forget to review the last bottle again after a few months please
Thanks mate. Yeah maybe I'll do that...if they survive that long. 😂
Great job mate, looks perfect!
Thank you! Cheers!
Did exactly the same two days ago. Except I added some lime juice and quick oats into the mash @ 66'C - and used Kveik yeast at 36'C for the first time. My god is it lively.
Sounds interesting, hope it turns out nice.
@@G-townbrewer Cheers G Town. All fermentation done inside 4 days. Now the long wait.
@@G-townbrewer It is amazing. On my fourth brew - all from the same single packet - I have been re-using the initial blow off that collects in my blow off bottle filled with pure water. Game changing.
Great vid mate!
Thanks and Cheers!
I made this recently as I had the same ingredients lying around and it is really great . Thanks !
Great to hear you enjoyed it. It's worth stashing up a few bottles of this as it gets better and better over time. Cheers!
nice video - thanks - was the muntons extract hopped?
Love the smile when you tasted it when you brew your own and do it well it’s a great feeling. Have you tried a tin of black treacle in a stout it gives it some great flavour and increases the alcohol content.
Haha. I've brewed over a hundred beers now and I still can't believe how good (most) come out and that first taste always brings a smile to my face. I only do one stout a year so don't experiment much, but I've read that treacle is a good addition. May give that a go next time. Keep brewing and may you be blessed with the homebrewers smile every brew! cheers 🍻
I'm going to try this ready for Xmas ...ps love your vids
Thanks mate. You might be pushing it in time for Xmas, but worth a shot. It really does getter with age this one. Cheers!
Sounds delicious!! I had the same idea. Have an Imperial stout in the fermenter that's going to be a monster at around 9%. Not sure I'll be able to hold off until Christmas though!
9%...ooosh..!! Half pint glasses at the ready?
@@G-townbrewer For, ahem...'medicinal' purposes 😉
Did you add a carb drop when bottling? Going to try this when my cider has been bottled :)
I generally use dextrose when bottling. A level teaspoon per bottle would probably be about right. Cheers 🍻
What was your starting Og and FG, mine is on day 6 of brewing
I think OG was 1.050 and FG was around 1.016. Hope it turns out well. Cheers
Did you just pitch your yeast on top and leave it or did you stir it in
I normally just sprinkle it over the top and let it do it’s thing. Seems to work just fine. Cheers.
Hi great video just checking how much water do you steep the malt in cheers
A couple of litres should be about right for steeping the grains.
Hi there.
I am new to brewing and have a question I'm hoping you'll be able to help with. I have just purchased this kit along with some chocolate malt and dark spray malt.
When bottling is it essential to add carbonation drops? I'm not a fan of fizzy stout. I like a smooth stout like guinness. To achieve a smoother stout, shall I leave out the carbonation drops when bottling? TIA :)
I think you’ll need to add some carbonation if you’re bottling it and this will also help to preserve it in the bottles and will give it some head. Maybe aim for half a teaspoon per bottle of dextrose or table sugar. You could try using a pressure barrel if not as this will give a smother less “fizzy” beer with a nice creamy head. Good luck. Cheers 🍻
@G-townbrewer thanks so much for your help.
I've been watching your videos and they've really helped me learn alot about home brewing.
Why did you use two tins of malt extract and then add grain wart?
To increase body and flavour. One of the tins was un-hopped malt extract.
Thought you may have hopped that m8 ?
maybe next time...!
@@G-townbrewer hey, how often do u get that homebreww taste as am getting it regular now and its really killing my enthusiasm . Advice m8
@@carlwyatt5036 Not often. I always use Harris Pure Brew and have found this eliminates that "homebrew tang" if that's what you're talking about. There's a whole bunch of other off-flavours you can get from other reasons though. For example, are controlling the temperature during fermentation? Are you using tap water and if so are you treating it to remove chlorine? - just a couple of things...
